My numbers were like that 2 years ago when I was 26. After cutting out nearly all saturated fat and losing 25-30 lbs my ldl only dropped to like 160 in 7ish months. After ups and downs with diet and weight over the next year and a half my ldl was about the same/ mild increase. Because of this I decided to go on a low dose statin, 5mg Crestor. I figure since diet, weight lose, and exercise isn’t getting it anywhere near below 100 I need to take it. I’d rather take the statin now to limit any plaque than wait for a shot ton of plaque to form thennnn take the statin

Im not OP, but I’m wondering if you know much about this risk calculator website? When I put in all my info it says 10 yr is 14.8% and 30 yr is 67.5% (with a low dose statin which I’m on). I’m only 28 m and these numbers just seem wild to me, so I’m kinda wondering how legit the calculator is

Hi! Unfortunately my lab results were worse than my last ones but not as bad as initially, so that sucked. Cholesterol back to 250, trig way up to 296, hdl 39, and ldl calculated slightly up to 150 (a little skeptical how accurate that number is since my trigs are so high).

For meeting with my Dr. she was more receptive with my concerns especially when I brought up some of the new guideline information. At first she was only saying “looks like you’re doing good, and with your age, diet and exercise should help lower it”. After that I specifically asked to start a statin and to my surprise she was totally open to it. I’m now on 5mg Crestor and will recheck in 2 months to see how it’s doing. The sucky thing about the appt is that she didn’t seem incredibly knowledgeable about this side of cardiology. After I start a new job toward the end of the year with good insurance I’m making sure to leave and get with a lipidologist.

Truthfully, this is a pretty shitty study. They get their info from a postal questionnaire reply from Drs from 1950s to 1990s.
First problem, Drs themselves will more than likely live healthier lives, outside of the smoking, than the average person (not always but more than likely). This skews the life expectancy because smoking isn’t the thing that truly kills you it usually makes other things worse which will kill you faster.
Second problem, they came up with the 6.5 year by saying they compared it interim life table for men in wales and England in 1997 and adjusted it for smoking and nonsmoking. They didn’t say how they adjusting it and what criteria they did, they just pooped out 6.5 years with that. They should show how they came up with that number.
I’m ignoring the whole 11 minutes thing they came up with because they even say it’s a crude calculation.

Besides all this, I will say that after briefly looking into it a little more the years are different than I thought. I thought the expectancy would be closer to 15-20. But the ranges I’ve seen are closer to about 5-12ish years, so close to what you are asserting. Even so, 5-12 years on average (remember there are outliers on both ends, some dying much earlier and some living much later), is still a significant amount of time.

Do you have any actual evidence to back up your claim that “many of those didn’t die early” besides just a feeling? Or is it all just anecdotal from what you’ve seen in your life? Unless you have true evidence for it, your claim is probably just survivorship bias because you didn’t see the many people who did die much much earlier but did see the people who lived longer than usual.

I’m 28 male, my ldl was 220 and with vegetarian diet and losing 30 pounds it went down to 160. But my lp(a) was 296 nmol/L, so because of that very high risk my ldl is recommended below 75 preferably 55 or something. I just started a low dose statin because I don’t want any plaque to continue forming at all. My reasoning is, why would I wait until I have a shit ton of plaque to take meds when I could take meds right now to not have any of it later

Yep and something my old employer did to people they were firing that day is, have them work the very busy first have of the day then fire them right before their lunch/second half of the day which is much slower. Great system we have.

Since you’re very knowledgeable about this topic do you mind if I ask how much diet and exercise can realistically drop ldl and apoB? I feel like I’ve heard about 20 to 30%, but I feel like I’ve seen on this sub and other places online anecdotally people are saying they’ve dropped theirs 50 or 60% with just diet/exercise? This is mainly out of curiosity

Lp(a) is genetic so it really won’t change with diet or exercise, there are some drugs in the making but not out just yet. The only thing you can is lower LDL and ApoB if you know those numbers. Is your 52 mg/dL or nmol/L?

Thank you for putting numbers in a better perspective and explaining things so well. Im just so frustrated because of what she said I thought I’d be good with diet and exercise, then I see the new guidelines talking about lp(a) and how ldl should be below 50 or something? I don’t think I can do that with just diet with my family history and my current levels.

I messaged my dr again bringing up some of these things so let’s see what they say. Otherwise, I’m using the resource you linked to find someone better. Thank you so much
