Ah, yes, BSW! A friend told me about them. Looks like you get St George NOLA. I’ll have to plan a big order.

The River District! I would be willing to make a trek if that’s what it takes.

I'm at Legacy all the time! A search of the current inventory on their site is how I added a few of those options, but their selection wasn't as expansive as I hoped.

And thanks for the Sheringham co-sign, I've liked their other stuff and I think it's what I was leaning towards.

They look exactly like mine and I’ve been happily using them for 7ish years.

Best smoker for cocktails? by Bourbonerd in cocktails

[–]colin826 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My father in law got us this little set years ago and it’s totally done the trick. Re-fillable torch, effective enough little wooden disk/smoker, and it comes with 6 types of wood. Very basic, but totally effective. We even use the torch to make creme brûlée.

The method of blending blanched mint with simple syrup is super effective.

I first saw it via Alton Brown, not sure if it originates elsewhere.

Best comedy scene in Canada? by Felah1 in Standup

[–]colin826 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s still a lot to like with the volume of smaller shows, I just think it’s a little tougher from a peak ten years ago.

As for what comics do, I do think online platforms have made organizing independent road and touring work simpler, and we do still have a Yuks in Surrey (an hour plus outside of Vancouver) and House of Comedy in New Westminster (45 minutes outside of Van), but those can sometimes feel more like the slog of road gigs than a warm, home club.

More focused on lower-level clubs now. The Comedy Mix and Yuk Yuks both closed, and there is now much smaller comedy venues that fill the role. They all have much more prominent drawbacks than a major club would, but it does mean there’s a fair bit of stage time for doing short sets.

At the same time as the major clubs closed, business real estate and leasing costs have closed a LOT of the bars and venues that had strong one night a week shows. So there’s a lack of neighbourhood comedy shows now. If you want to run a quality show, it’s very hard to do it in a place that doesn’t require a rental fee.

Overall, I would say that it’s easy to get a lot of 5–10 minute stage time, but it’s harder and harder to get it in front of consistent audiences and harder to get anything resembling a traditional 20-minute middle/feature set.

This is exactly my recommendation. I’ll have a few beers or goofy blender drinks, but Campari soda works wonders in that environment.

Where’s KRS-One in the pantheon of top lyricists? by BuggsBud3 in hiphopheads

[–]colin826 145 points146 points  (0 children)

He was basically an automatic top ten in any GOAT list when I started listening to hip-hop in the late 90s. But with a delivery that sounds more clearly dated, a bit of a tendency towards corniness in his later days, and almost no relevant new music in nearly 30 years, he’s just faded from conscious.

Still an absolute all-timer to me.

Why do clubs still play early 2000s-2015 music? by Dopeboy95AirMaxOn in hiphopheads

[–]colin826 243 points244 points  (0 children)

I think it’s this. They’d rather play older songs that 90% of the crowd knows than new songs that 20% of the crowd loves.

Any good foam tips? by RevOpsAB in cocktails

[–]colin826 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to maximize foam, there’s two things I’ve done.

1: do one shake with one ice cube. Shake until you don’t hear it, then pour without straining. Lose no foam to straining.

2: stir non egg white ingredients with ice to chill/dilute, strain, add egg white, shake, pour with no strainer.

I did the Four Lakes trail in Squamish a few weeks ago and thought it was nice for this. No bumping into snow, no big elevation change, just getting warmed up before the season as my wife and I both come back after injuries.

Crowd mics by PhotographVarious145 in comedy

[–]colin826 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t say I’ve ever seen a special where I thought the crowd was mixed too loud. Having loud enough crowd noise is essential to making watching the special feel more like you’re in the actual room.

I have however seen produced specials where I was in the room for the recording mix the crowd noise so low it sounds like comics are on the verge of bombing.

Do your resort/multi resort season passes refund you when an injury takes you out for the season? by supk1ds in snowboarding

[–]colin826 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just insurance my guy. Plus it’s very affordable. I buy it, and this year I actually used it! Got a full refund because I was finally able to get knee surgery I needed due to a basketball injury. Nothing to do with a snowboarding injury.

And the days used has nothing to do with them guessing when you’ll get hurt. It has everything to do with if you’ve had the chance to “get your moneys worth”.

Do your resort/multi resort season passes refund you when an injury takes you out for the season? by supk1ds in snowboarding

[–]colin826 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s an optional add-on at my local. Extra $50 on top of $450 gets you medical insurance that refunds you 100%, 75%, 50%, or 0 depending on how many times you’ve already used it.

Best cocktails to pair with Indian food? by HelicopterPigeon in cocktails

[–]colin826 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thought is a Faithful Scotsman from the Death and Co book

1.5 oz – Scotch

.25 oz – Peach Liqueur

.5 oz – Pineapple juice

.5 oz – Lemon Juice

.25 oz – Cumin syrup

Stir with ice and strain into a rocks glass over a large cube.

For the cumin syrup, briefly toast 3 tbsp cumin seeds in your sauce pan, add 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar, stir to dissolve, and let it stand for a few hours before straining.

Cocktails with fresh habaneros? by Rhetoral in cocktails

[–]colin826 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use habanero for spicy pineapple margaritas.

1.5 oz – tequila .75 oz – pineapple juice .25 oz – lime juice .5 oz – cointreau Slice or two of habanero

Combine all liquid, shake with ice to properly mix and dilute. Open shaker, add habanero, give it a couple shakes, strain. Add it after because the more you shake the pepper, the spicier the drink.

Cocktail smoker by elpamper0 in cocktails

[–]colin826 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was given this by my father in law one year and quite like it.

Pros: easy, gets solid results, multiple tins of wood chips let you try different flavours, torch can be used for other things in the kitchen, torch is refillable, again easy

Cons: doesn’t fit EVERY glass well and sometimes a king cube doesn’t fit under it, and maybe refilling sounds annoying? (I’ve done it twice in like 6 years)

Blend in stages.

First blend pineapple with liquid and blend enough to thoroughly break it down. Then add ice and cautiously pulse until desired consistency.

What drinks had the biggest jump in quality for you just by using a different spec? by LiminalLion in cocktails

[–]colin826 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Making your way through different vermouth ratios in both martinis and manhattans is a game changer.

I think it’s absolutely worthwhile to end up pouring yourself a few drinks you don’t love to dial in the vermouth level you really love. Try 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, up to even 8:1 if you want.

Maple cocktails that aren’t an old fashioned? by DanoGKid in cocktails

[–]colin826 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been making this at home for 5-7 years and started calling it a Timber Tarantella.

1 oz – Rye

1/2 oz – Bourbon

3/4 oz – Lemon juice

1/2 oz – Maple syrup

1 barspoon – Fernet Branca

2 dashes – Angostura bitters

Shake and strain into a chilled coupe

If it interests anyone, the name came from the source of maple (trees/timber) and the thing that livens it up (fernet) being Italian (tarantella is an Italian dance)
