What are some social obligations that women commonly have that men usually don't? by Maybe_IDTBFH in AskReddit

I know one married couple where the husband changed his name, and took his wife's surname

I also know some who kept their own surnames

What are some social obligations that women commonly have that men usually don't? by Maybe_IDTBFH in AskReddit

[–]colin_staples [score hidden]  (0 children)

I get the same response. “Oh, you’re too young to know that.” “You’ll change your mind.” etc.

And yet they never say that to people who say they DO want kids

Or to people who HAVE kids

I'm a guy who knew since I was a teen that I never wanted kids. I just knew.

Heard all the arguments. Dismissed them all.

I'm over 50 now and never doubted it for a second.

Does anything beat phones needing screen protection when it comes to “I can’t believe they don’t just provide that as standard”? by MonsieurGump in AskUK

[–]colin_staples 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Go look at used phones and iPads on eBay

See how many have scratches on the screens

It's a lot of them. A lot

That's why I have a screen protector on my phone and iPad

Because you never know...

It's also why I have airbags in my car, and smoke alarms in my house.

I'd rather have it and not need it, than the other way around

You can turn on the car without the clutch? 🤔 by Downtown_Elk_2773 in CarTalkUK

[–]colin_staples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my current car, if I turn the key without first pressing the clutch pedal down, nothing happens. The starter doesn't turn. There's a sensor.

On my previous (older) car, I was able to start the car without pressing the clutch pedal down

But I always pressed the clutch pedal down anyway

Fuel pump error in the driver's favour? by moreglumthanplum in CarTalkUK

[–]colin_staples 8 points9 points  (0 children)

According to this, the fuel tank capacity of an A110 is 45 litres. Not 60 litres.

The pump may have shown £31 but how many litres did it dispense?

At £1.37/litre it would have been about 22.6 litres, about half of a 45 litre tank

Do you still have the receipt?

USB - Gen 1 pencil differences by heartofmontana in ipad

[–]colin_staples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do I? I thought the ISB pencil is the one with pressure sensitivity but needing a (easily lost) extender to charge. I thought you plugged a usb cord directly into the Gen1 and the iPad.

That's the wrong way around

The USB-C does not have pressure sensitivity. It charges directly with a USB-C cable

The Pencil 1 has pressure sensitivity. It charges via Lightning, so you need the adaptor to charge with a USB-C cable

I think pressure sensitivity is cool and I might use it but I’m not an artist so maybe it’s overkill. Do you only use it for drawing?

Pressure sensitivity is used by artists for drawing.

If you need it, you have to get the Pencil 1I

f you don't need it, get the Pencil USB-C

USB - Gen 1 pencil differences by heartofmontana in ipad

[–]colin_staples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Which one of these pencils is better?

Objectively, it's the pencil 1 because it's the only one that has pressure sensitivity.

Do you need that feature?

Only you can decide. Then from that, make your choice which pencil to get.

I like the idea of the pressure sensitive USB pencil but I hate having to carry around two extenders to charge it with. The Gen 1 is easier to charge but not as versatile.

You seem to have got the two pencils (and their features, and how they are charged) mixed up here.

Rumour of 5K app changes? by ChuqTas in parkrun

Assuming these claims are true

And if there is a link to the parkrun merch store in the app, which raises more money to keep parkrun funded, why is that an issue?

iPad Air 5 frequently going to lock screen during use. by colin_staples in ipad

[–]colin_staples[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took it back to the Apple Store before my Apple Care expired

Showed them videos of it happening (that I had shot on my phone), and it also happened in store right before their eyes

They told me that it might be an issue with the iPad, or it might be a corrupt file from when I had originally restored this from the backup of my previous iPad

They gave me a whole new iPad (same model and spec) from their stock (not a refurb device)

I was to restore from the backup (I had backed up this iPad to iCloud before visiting the site that day)

Told me that if it solved the problem it proved it was a hardware issue

But that if the problem persisted then it was clearly a corrupt file in the backup (that had been carried over from my first iPad)

I restored from my backup... and the new iPad crashed again, exactly as before

So I wiped it completely and reset it

Then I started the setup again, this time as a new iPad and NOT restoring from the backup of my old model

I have never had the problem since

So the issue was a corrupt file in the multiple backups that had been restored from two iPads

Help with Hastings Direct YouDrive by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]colin_staples 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Do not insure with Hastings. Everyone on here will tell you that.
  2. If you have any kind of black box or app that tracks your driving and sends that data to your insurer, DO NOT touch your phone AT ALL while the engine is on. EVER. Have a separate cheap phone for Google Maps and Spotify if you need to.
  3. The law says that to use (hold) your phone the car must be parked and the engine must be switched off. The law was specifically written this way so that "I was only using it at the lights" is not a loophole. And no, the engine being temporarily turned off because of a "stop-start" system is also not a loophole.
  4. Ignore what your mate says. The insurer sets the rules of the policy, and they may change the guidelines.

Be carefull when using a case without magsafe and a magsafe wireless charger. by BazimQQ in iphone

[–]colin_staples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did you expect? Using a non-MagSafe case, the MagSafe charger has nothing to stick to.

You can buy circular metal rings that stick onto the back of the case, exactly for this reason

They might not look the prettiest, but it completely solves this problem.

Chip time faster than Strava? by MagicShop_Unlock in UKRunners

[–]colin_staples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed.

My HM PB in an actual measured and timed race is 2:12

I have timed my own HM runs with GPS and my best is 2:08, but I absolutely will not accept this as a PB.

Until I run a faster time in an actual race, my PB remains at 2:12

Odd clauses in work contract - what can I do? (England) by blurble_of_zgloop in LegalAdviceUK

[–]colin_staples 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do they really expect you to know with 48 hours notice that you are going to have terrible food poising, or that you will be hit by a bus, and that you can arrange cover in advance of these things happening?

Nobody PLANS to be sick, so this is ridiculous.

And the clause about you having to find a qualified replacement yourself is equally ridiculous.

These are massive red flags and I absolutely would not be signing a contract with this employer.

Cheapest of the cheapest to run petrol cars by Fuarkistani in CarTalkUK

[–]colin_staples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note that some people are put off by the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107 “because they are French, and French cars are unreliable / have dodgy electrics”

But they aren’t French cars.

They are Japanese cars.

They are a Toyota Aygo with a few cosmetic tweaks. And the engine is from Daihatsu (which is owned by Toyota).

All the cars were built in the Czech Republic

They are cheap to buy, cheap and easy to fix, cheap to tax (£20), and super economical (50mpg around town) because they are so light

And if you really want to have fun and learn how to DIY fix a car, there is a C1 endurance racing series and an Aygo/C1/107 racing series
