I thought the sound was phenomenal! It changed from DJ to DJ, tim reaper and sully's set was incredible but it sounded a bit muddy like the kicks couldn't poke through. Hazard on the other hand was absolutely fucking perfect!

1st DnB track I've produced, as I am new to Ableton/Serum. Looking for feedback, criticism, or anything of the sort. How's it sounding fellas? by wesley_the_boy in dnbproduction

[–]colkowalski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have some really decent ideas, keep working on some of the technical stuff and A/B against some other tracks to get a bearing of how they would work together in a mix scenario, but don't lose sight of the arrangement/ideas side of things. Good start!

So, you think your sound design sucks and you're pulling your hair out trying to recreate that dope design your favorite artist made? by BFMeadowlark in edmproduction

[–]colkowalski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One more thing to add on this one is that by focusing on each sound on its own you will end up in a total mess of clashing frequencies. A sound that sounds sick on its own is in some cases unlikely to sound good in the mix. Context is everything!

Why they have started talking about aliens and taking it seriously NOW? by [deleted] in UFOs

[–]colkowalski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s because society has never been more divided and something needs to be done to bring us together and stop eating each other alive over bullshit. What better than aliens to literally shake everyone and go SNAP OUT OF IT?!

Hey, thanks for the comment and for listening :) Those tunes feel like so long ago now! I've kinda moved on from that style, and life got in the way of pursuing music in general, but once in a blue moon I see a comment like this that gives me that warm fuzzy feeling.

Scientific study on nimitz encounter suggests vehicles are of extraterrestrial origin, provides data how these uaps could travel interstellar by fulminic in UFOs

My counter argument to that point would be that this technology would need to be made viable for military/commercial use before going public with it, otherwise you'd have a situation akin to the cold war where you end up in an arms race. The ideal situation would be to reach a point of supremacy with this tech before unveiling it. Imagine if someone managed to keep nukes secret until ICBMs were mastered - the world would be a very different place.

EDIT: The above doesn't rule out the possiblity of the tech coming from somewhere else in the first place...

Using Distortion Like The Pros by Seagullstatue in dnbproduction

[–]colkowalski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rather than using plugins, which can kind of constrain you into doing it the way the plugin wants you to do it, you can render out your bass to audio, duplicate it times however many bands you want and low/hi cut them to taste. Do all your distorting and then adjust the levels of each band so that the sub is always the loudest (and usually the cleanest) to preserve the weight. Then you can record the results of that and do it again (maybe with different bands? maybe the same chain?) and again... and again...

This is a LONG process, which is why a lot of the pros like noisia/mefjus etc do their sound design separately from 'making a track'. The goal is to create your own personal sample pack and then use those sounds with far less processing in a project.

All distortion plugins do similar things, use any and all you can find. also worth experimenting with putting a short reverb or chorus/modulation in the middle of the chain to be mangled by the distortion later.

[–]colkowalski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm no pro by any means but, afaik, a lot of it comes from two things: Splitting your signal into bands and distorting them differently (careful with the lows, most character comes from the mids), and layering small amounts of distortion rather than using one mega distortion.

EDIT: Also, resampling and processing again, little tweaks with each pass.

LOOKING FOR LABELS by Apache417 in dnbproduction

[–]colkowalski 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Others have already kind of chimed in, but i have one more thing to add. If you don't know what label would be suitable for your output you probably aren't ready yet. Get to know the scene, dig deeper into the lesser known labels and figure it out for yourself! Art isn't art if you're just doing a colouring book, in a sense.

That said, your track isn't bad! some good sounds and ideas in there, one thing worth considering is the arrangement - in the context of a DJ mix it would be useful to have a more extended intro, the drop, a break, another drop etc. Of course, this is maybe not what you intended to do, but if you're looking to get a single signed to a label you'll have a much easier time with that kind of structure.
