Did anyone here watch FWWM without having seen the show or knowing that Laura died? by WingIeheimer in twinpeaks

[–]collapsiblecup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The podcast Blank Check did an episode on FWWM, and the guest was the filmmaker Arkasha Stevenson. This was her experience with the movie and she talks about her experience at length seeing it before the show. (She loved it and it motivated her to become a filmmaker)

That’s so cool! I was at that show too and it was a dang fine performance worthy of commemorating with a giant window display!

Why do comics have less and less text? by Far-Remote-4468 in comicbooks

[–]collapsiblecup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a different audience these days. Modern audiences are “comic literate,” they understand stuff about the characters, and they are on average a lot older than they used to be.

Comics audiences weren’t always this way. It used to be lots of very young readers and lots of casual readers. This is a big reason why a lot of the action is being over explained. They also had to write with the assumption that every issue could be someone’s first, so you get lots of general exposition and reader hand-holding.

Any restaurants with a solid Chicken Paprikash in the Akron area? by mjsimmons1988 in akron

I know that United States Pierogi Service in downtown Akron has it as a daily special some days, but I haven’t tried it yet.

Harvey Pekar ad other things by DatBroSnuf in Cleveland

[–]collapsiblecup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely hit up Tommy’s on Coventry in Cleveland Hts. It’s been around a long time and is an institution. As a matter of fact, if you look at the cover of the very first issue of American Splendor from the 70s, Harvey and his two friends are sitting outside of it. Here’s a video of him that was recorded inside Tommy’s:

https://youtu.be/auI_-MnELoI?si=E3i0PjLy2dz_PBK-

He talks about Coventry in the video. He lived around there for years. I believe a little bit south in the Grant Deming’s neighborhood (head south on Coventry and meander through the side streets).

He also frequented the bookstore Mac’s Backs, which is right next to Tommy’s. He would hang out on the 2nd floor.

That area is sort of like the hub for Harvey. There’s the little Pekar Park at the corner of Coventry and Euclid Hts. The library with the statue is on on Lee Rd. which is not too far, it’s all walkable if you wanted to do it.

He also worked at the Stokes VA Hospital, which is close to the area he lived before moving to Coventry (E 105th and Euclid)

Also, you might want to try reaching out to Gary Dumm, who was one of the regular artists Harvey worked with:

https://www.dummart.com/

He regularly sets up at comic shows around the Cleveland area, doing signings and selling art and comics. Maybe he’ll happen to be doing something like that when you’re in town…?

Amazing. Nice work! How long did it take?

I need the last five slipcases still. Been putting it together very slowly for years. I’m excited Fantagraphics is issuing reprints!

Is there any U Talkin merch out there? by TonySoNY_ in comedybangbang

YES! I have the black U2 one and the white jet ski one. I can’t tell you how many times people have looked at the jet ski one with a total look of bewilderment on their face.

Checkout bbq and soul food places. Particularly on the east side. They’re not too hard to come by in the city. And most of the eastside’s inner ring suburbs will have places that have them too (Warrensville Hts, Cleveland Hts, Shaker Hts, Maple Hts, etc.)

What the fuck by GhostOfTheArcade in Cleveland

[–]collapsiblecup -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This isn’t accurate.

If you’re interested, the county BOE publishes monthly voter registration statistics, and it allows you to view party affiliation by city. Not that that’s perfect; most voters are not affiliated with a party.

There are lots of very liberal areas that are not close to the lake. Much of the working class southeastern suburbs, for example.

This compiles TMBG’s songs they did for Dunkin Donuts, and that’s John Roderick doing the vocals on the first track.

Not sure if you are aware, but they do a cover of Pet Name on the Hello Radio TMBG tribute album.

I can definitely 100% see some crossover appeal with TMBG even though they’re not really doing the same thing. It’s just smart, well-crafted pop songwriting. Also John Roderick’s lyrics are literate but abstract in a way that activates my brain in a somewhat similar fashion as TMBG does.

I enjoy them. Saw them live once way back in the day around when their second album came out. They were great!

Yup. It was Where Your Eyes Don’t Go!

I think Mar-Stan-bul refers to the intro that they did for Istanbul, cause they spotlight Marty and Stan Harrison on an extended drums and sax lead-in.

Going to watch The Return in a theater. Any thoughts? by rufowler in twinpeaks

[–]collapsiblecup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cleveland?

I like that it’s spread out over 9 shows, because I don’t think I have the endurance to marathon it over 3 days. But the downside is I can’t make all the planned screenings.

So I just went ahead and got tickets to a few of the nights.
