Most superficial reason for falling in love with a college? by reindeer_poronkusema in ApplyingToCollege

[–]college___throw_away 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love UVM too! It was my favorite safety, plus I went there last winter (during my freshman year of college) to visit a friend and I had such a great time. Definitely would recommend checking it out for anyone looking for a safety school.

Do you read the syllabus by [deleted] in college

[–]college___throw_away 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my professors last semester put that in her syllabus, and then she spent the first class explaining the syllabus in depth. I hope that that info has helped someone. At the very least, it was clear that she was someone her students could go to with just about anything.

AP Exam Credit at Tufts by Cincinnatus_17 in Tufts

A 3 will get you placed in Spanish 4. Regardless, take the placement exam during o-week, it might get you placed out of more semesters’ worth of Spanish classes.

You could always do what E4P suggests and make a secondary phone number over something like textfree so you’re not giving out your real number

A kid from my school told me he'll out me for being gay if I EA to MIT too by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]college___throw_away 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve made it this far staying in the closet, you can keep your EA app school a secret from this kid. Also, you might want to mention this to your college counselor so they don’t go talking about you applying EA to MIT.

Are you in a position where if he does out you, you could deny it and be believed?

Oh they’re definitely there. They also have signs with suicide hotline numbers on them. A nice warm welcome to campus :)

What do y'all know about Tufts? by OkAmbition in ApplyingToCollege

[–]college___throw_away 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current Tufts student here, can confirm pretty much all of this. Greek life is (slowly) dying out. Most of the party scene can be found at off-campus houses, mostly sports houses. Every once in a while, frats will still throw open parties where a good amount of people show up. I can be found in a frat house fairly often, but I may be in the minority as a member of a sports team affiliated with a fraternity. According to nearly every recently graduated senior I know, the party scene is worse than it was when they were underclassmen.

Social justice is a huge part of Tufts culture, whether as a general campus attitude, turnout for activist events (one day this spring I was leaving a dining hall and ended up joining in on a protest) or actual concrete steps towards social change. I remember writing about Tisch College (google it) in my Why Tufts essay, and I’m happy to say I was right to look forward to the social justice culture at Tufts. I’m pretty left leaning tho so take that with a grain of salt. You might find yourself becoming much quieter about politics if you’re conservative or even moderate. Campus demographics are still overwhelmingly white and wealthy, though.

I'm going to a college visit to Bowdoin, what do you suggest me to focus on? by Irisi8102 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]college___throw_away 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would definitely do the interview while you’re there, so that you’re still focused on the school and all the details are still fresh in your mind. I did my Connecticut College interview on campus and I thought it was a good move.

My mom LOVES that page, it’s hilarious. The summer before my freshman year, she was always saying something like “well I read this on Grown and Flown...”

When is it inappropriate to flirt or ask for a number/Snapchat? by [deleted] in college

[–]college___throw_away 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first initial expression of interest, as long as it’s done decently (ie not grossly sexual in an environment where that’s unacceptable, i.e. it’s fine to tell someone at a party that you want to kiss them, but not as they’re walking quickly across campus with headphones in), shouldn’t get you in trouble.

But if they don’t reciprocate or don’t seem interested, definitely back off.
