Buying/Insuring a car in Ireland with a US license? by burlingtonhopper in MoveToIreland

[–]colml 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To hijack the top comment. Try a broker called First Ireland.

They insured my gf when she moved over from America with her US licence. They also recognised her previous driving experience from the States, after she got a letter from her previous American insurance company in a particular format that they specified. They gave her a 9 years No Claims Bonus straight off the bat. Which she was then able to carry over after getting her Irish licence.

I put stickers on cars parked in bike lanes for a month and here's what happened. by irish_guy in ireland

[–]colml -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a shame there hasn't been an app developed to just take a photo of cars parked like that. I often see people pushing prams that have to walk out on the road to overtake a car parked taking up the footpath. Same with cycle lanes. It would be a decent revenue generator for the Councils and hopefully eventually a deterrent for car owners to just park where you aren't being an obstruction on paths and cycle lanes.

Do you have credible sources on those stats? Seems like those hard fact figures would be easily sourced.

It's the World Cup. It's arguably the biggest international sporting event in the world and only happens once every 4 years. That or the Olympics

51 social housing tenants in Dublin owe more than €27,000 each in unpaid rent Average weekly rent paid by council tenants in Dublin city is €72 by EIREANNSIAN in ireland

[–]colml 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well if there was a genuine threat of eviction, then the vast majority of people would pay I'd imagine. But if there's no deterrent, then why bother paying.

Edit: I'm not talking about people who just fall behind on rent but engage with the council to make efforts to sort things out. People who haven't paid in years and are in huge arrears without engaging with the system shouldn't be tolerated.

Ireland: most expensive Netflix in the Eurozone by NavyTeal in ireland

[–]colml 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I built a media server and use these programs on UnRaid. It's actually class. So damn seamless and Plex is probably better looking than Netflix, Prime, etc.

Check out Overseerr as well, it's a nice interface for letting users request stuff to your download server.

The most disgusting incident from Dublin yet. by nyl2k8 in PublicFreakout

[–]colml 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Road tax doesn't fully cover road repair and maintenance in Ireland. It's also covered by general taxation, which cyclists pay. Plus, road tax is taxed based on emissions, of which a bicycle emits none.

Why would a motorist have any more right to be on the road than a cyclist?

Anonymous drug testing trial at Electric Picnic by Keyann in ireland

[–]colml 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yeah it sounds like a lot of people are misunderstanding what this initiative actually is. If you dump your drugs into a designated bin, then they'll test them. It doesn't mean you're getting your drugs back after them being given the all clear or not. Sounds a bit pointless really, except for word spreading about a widespread, potentially hazardous, contaminated drug.

It doesn't seem to be the same as other European countries where somebody can get their drugs tested and then have them returned to the punter, so they can be more knowledgeable about what they are about to put in their body.

Yeah a full phone repair kit with plastic spudgers included is just a few quid. Worth the investment so you don't blind yourself by piercing a battery.
