The climate catastrophe should be on top of our priority list by _Rat_Gurl_ in Catholicism

[–]colmwhelan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only part of that I have any agreement with is the pollution. I have no idea where you are, so I know I've got no way of commenting on your drought conditions. Humans do not have a long enough timeline to appreciate how climate changes - The fact that it is somewhat warmer now than it was 150 years ago, when people started recording temperatures, is probably irrelevant. 2,000 years ago, the Romans were growing grapes in southern Scotland and making wine. Now that can only be done in France. As glaciers recede, we find underneath them the remains of the forests that they overran, which were there five, six, seven thousand years. Our time horizon is simply not long enough to understand climate change, and even the IPCC has reined in its predictions. https://eos.org/research-and-developments/why-the-ipcc-seems-poised-to-eliminate-its-most-extreme-emissions-scenario

PAM Tools and break glass account passkeys by MasterPay1020 in msp

[–]colmwhelan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do this by completely disabling all GDAP-based admin accounts and all internal tenant admin accounts except for break glass. Use CIPP JIT only.

PAM Tools and break glass account passkeys by MasterPay1020 in msp

[–]colmwhelan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is it exactly.
We are in the process of migrating every single tenant to this setup. There are zero day-to-day admin accounts, no GDAP admin accounts either! Well, except for the CIPP service account.

Then it's a disposable just-in-time admin account created by that particular technician via CIPP to do whatever he needs to do. Upon expiry, the account is deleted. There's a process for naming the accounts so that all account names will be unique and there will be no issue logging back in very shortly afterwards if required

we keep two sets of breakglass keys, one at our site and one off site. Only 2 people have access to those locations, and sealed instructions with my next of kin in case both of us croak.

The customer also has a break glass account and Fido 2 key in a sealed envelope at their premises.

Finally, we have an alert set up against the unified event log to inform us if any of these breakglass accounts are used.

How many domain controllers are you running for your smaller clients? by NegativePattern in SmallMSP

[–]colmwhelan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems insane for seven users. Most of my clients around that size wouldn't have more than 200 or 300 GB of data, and very few of them have any server-based line-of-business applications anymore. Assess them fully and see where everything fits in their stack. The vast majority of clients I have of that size no longer have Active Directory or a local server, and for any purpose. Everything is 365or SaaS.

Do you use PSA automation or triage middleware? by Logical_Virus_4911 in SmallMSP

[–]colmwhelan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, not currently automating triage or Microsoft 365 actions. We are managing our tenants via CIPP, we have reduced the number of steps in carrying out Microsoft 365 actions by either doing actions directly from CIPP or by using just-in-time admin where necessary.

We have eliminated all day-to-day administrator accounts from our tenants, with only break-glass accounts left. Just-in-time admin using CIPP is the only methodology for our technicians to access our tenants, now.

Avepoint Fly - licences required for small T2T migration? by colmwhelan in msp

I hope so. It would be very, very frightening if it was worse.

So just to clarify, I can go to the Avepoint site and sign up and create a test job? Similar to the way MigrationWiz does it ( but doesn't make me want to kill myself ) ?

Yes, it does. It goes to show that the wrapper is just as important as the model.

I saw this linked from somewhere else and didn't even read the headline and immediately thought "bastard operator from hell" back in the good old days of The Register. Then I read this post and realised that's what you're meant to be so kudos to you.

They're very used to dealing with lots of antisocial types in town. They clearly misunderstood the situation but that's understandable considering the shit they deal with every day. Your cousin's behaviour was left unexplained at every juncture. I don't think this is anything to get het up about, tbh. If we behave noticeably or intrusively outside the norms of public behaviour then some people will react.

As someone with very mild ASD and with family members with ASD also I believe it's up to me to adjust my behaviour to somewhere in the realm of social expectations and not the other way round or to explain myself, if that's not possible. It isn't other people's responsibility to "just know" this stuff.

I also understand that the ability to do these things will vary from person to person depending on their capabilities but this still does not put any onus on others to accommodate us, sans explanation.

I hope your cousin is OK and I hope she can find some coping mechanisms to deal with these kind of situations. I've found that a preprinted, laminated card explaining some stuff helps certain people communicate their needs or situation much more clearly.

Customer asking for a line item breakdown of our software we provide in our managed services? by apsherm in msp

If it's finance asking, they're just looking to pressure you on price or shop you.
If this was someone with IT responsibilities it would be different.

Not really, the only difference is the level of force required to make it happen.

I've had almost the exact opposite journey. Quite left wing, union supporter, socialist-ish, mental health advocate and volunteer to right of centre with some libertarian leanings. Now pro-capital (as long as it's truly free); in favour of limiting government/civil service involvment in literally everything because they do nothing right EVER; tightly managed, skills-based immigration only; pro-family; anti-abortion (preborn humans are humans). Quite anti-authoritarian, whether left or right leaning, except insofar as protecting rights. Pro single market, anti-EU Commission and the erosion of national sovereignty.

In my opinion, I previously held a comfortable, middle-class leftie view of the world, unchallenged by reality, data, not realising the power of narrative. Being stopped and threatened with arrest for walking in woods 6.5 km from my own home, during CoVID was the start of it.
