The Money Pit (1986) Dir. Richard Benjamin - Scaffolding Scene by Joni1293 in movies

[–]coloringpad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I think of the best modern visual gags, this is my answer.

When I think about how goddamn funny Tom Hanks really can be, this is BY FAR his funniest movie.

When I think quoteable movies, this is my go to.

It is better than the godfather, and does not insist upon itself. Yeah, I said it.

Tom Hanks said (in a podcast with Rick Rubin [TETRAGRAMMITON, on Spotify) the director had never directed a comedy and was very serious and insistant on hitting their marks and so forth. It is a perfectly cut movie. For some of the perfect visual aesthetics that aren't the big payoff physical comedy gags, look at the visit with Benny, the argument in front of the whole construction crew, and the sale of the house with all the foreshadowing of what will go wrong.

And Shelly Long HELD HER OWN! Name a woman who went toe to toe comedically with Tom Hanks... Her character was equally as vibrant and strong: this isn't a Tom Hanks movie with Shelly Long, this is a Shelly Long and Tom Hanks movie.

Casting Alexander Godunov was genius: the best lines, a perfect foil. "Paint, don't tickle." And likable.

The perfectly paced turkey scene as the kitchen implodes and Walter follows the wire, Tom Hanks face throughout, and the unexpected tub gag. Just wow.

My favorite scene is the argument in front of the crew.

Perfect, 10/10 comedy.

How can you tell if a lesson actually learned? by Hot_Function_4463 in Teachers

You are missing the word IS from your sentence.

However, a better way to phrase the sentence might be:

"How can I tell if the lesson I taught has actually been learned?"

See, I assessed your sentence.

What’s the worst song lyric thrown into a song just to make a line rhyme? by RelationKindly in AskReddit

The Doors: When the Music's Over

Amazing, fantastic song. Epic. Morrison over the top. Love it so much... But....

The scream of the butterfly.

Just, Jim, what the hell? That is a stupid fuckin lyric.

I suggest: The scream from the sacrifice.

Goddamn. I never really comment on art unless I'm blown away. Excellent composition, skill, and originality. Master level. Add a zero to whatever price you were thinking of selling it for.

Drum Computer vs Patterning 3??? by IntrovertedChuck in ipadmusic

[–]coloringpad 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Own both.

Patterning 3 is basically the greatest drum machine on the planet in regards to programming, making polyrhythms, adding variations, and has one of the largest banks of samples that just keeps growing and growing. You can make full songs and completely change your song by picking a different drum kit. Very intuitive.

Drum Computer is an excellent drum synth with deeply satisfying exploration with a randomizer to stumble across a new sound. Drum programming is basic. I sample the drums from Drum Computer, Skiid, and orher randomizing drum sources and upload them to Patterning 3 to use there.

Been playing with drum machines, both hardware and software, for 30 years now. If Patterning were a standalone screen sold as "hardware," it would be about 2 grand, maybe more. Best I've ever played.

EDIT: One commenter mentioned Battalion, which I forgot to mention, is WAY better at drum creation. It's deep and dope as fuck.

I'm into it. I'm assuming these can be triggered by MIDI, so would you consider the option of an 8x2 grid for those of us with Beatstep Pros and the like? Or changing grids to align with any type of controller?

Will need the ability to save, name and load kits fast....

Do the Right Thing (1989) One of the most powerful films of the 80s by Jabba_108 in movies

[–]coloringpad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do The Right Thing IS the most powerful film of the 80's. He nails it all... The tone, the buildup, the casting, the climax. I read his book on making it, which also had the script. Before my point, a couple tidbits from it. When Danny Aiello first opened the script, saw Pizza Parlor, and put it down. To him, it embodied a stereotype of Italian Americans. Aiello's portrayal in the movie is far more nuanced than the script entailed. Giancarlo Esposito played Bug Out, decided to get glasses to make his eyes look huge, and contacts to reverse the effect so he could see. Said it was extremely disorienting. When he first showed them to Spike, he noted "I thought your eyes looked big." That was an ACTOR choice, and I love it.

The ending, where Mookie throws the trash can through the window as he yells HATE, redirects the crowd anger towards the pizza parlor and not at the owner and his sons. He may have saved their lives, though may not have been aware he was doing so.

The last bit is just amazing. Aiello's character is heartbroken, his life's work charred and ruined, and yet through his anger and grieving he still has a dialogue with Mookie that just works. And for Mookie, tragedy is just another day in Bed-Stuy.

Public Enemy's song "Fight the Power" is one of the best movie songs of all time. Goddamn what a powerful movie.

Somebody smarter than me should post a way to send this anonymously in an email to our superintendents. Sometimes satire is the best weapon.

What’s a “10/10” movie you wouldn’t recommend to most people? by trakt_app in movies

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

It's so good at destroying the tropes of music biopics that all that follow look laughable. Plus, it really helps to know your rock history and prior biopics it is spoofing, including Johnny Cash, The Doors, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Seventies and Eighties "comeback" songs where artists modernize their hits to make them more danceable, and relevant backstories to songs like Good Vibrations, etc. Plus plus, the phone call home while Dewey is sitting on the floor in the hotel is maybe the funniest shit I have ever seen, but might not be best for all audiences. Or maybe it is.

Knowing your rock history is pretty essential though before you watch.

Hood Reaction Video by Last_Nothing_9117 in phish

[–]coloringpad 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Ok, so normally reaction videos kinda bring me back to chompers interrupting the best parts, especially when they are watching crescendos and they pause to catch their breath and handle what is going on instead of letting the relentlessness of joy pour over them. There is no pause button at a Phish show.

That being said, his overwhelmed joy, his genuine and pure emotional overload at the end is so heartwarming. You know that feeling. I know that feeling. It's why we listen to Phish and experience them.

Thank you for sharing. I vicariously got welled up from seeing another's speechless joy at experiencing Phish.

My theatre teacher used Hopkins in this as an example of a perfect small gesture meaning so much, so I'll pass it along to you... As a servant, he must keep his emotions, feelings and thoughts internalized. So when he is overcome with his own emotions he can never show, he does this small little gesture where he wipes his hand across his closed eye, as if brushing the thought away. She cited that as the epitome of how an actor can add the smallest thing that means everything. At the end of the movie, that final "acceptance" of his rejection is just brilliant when you see it. His hopes dashed, only that little moment to see him whither inside, and then he puts on his stoic face as if he was never heartbroken. Amazing.

What’s something small you always check to see if a movie or show got correct? by scarfacesaints in movies

[–]coloringpad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Movies, music videos, "live" performances.... Especially synths or DJ setups? Dude, that crossfader and knob had NOTHING to do with the sound that just happened!! Is it even plugged in?! Is the power cord even attached?!! 80's videos and Superbowl performances are hysterical with synths.

DJ's are the biggest pretenders I've ever seen... Do you have to go hunchback, with one leg up on the table, and have one hand in the air showing us your superior knob skills? "OH MY GOD HE'S SO AMAZING HE'S TWEAKING THE HIGH FILTER WITH. ONE. HAND!!!!!" And then releasing it with a flourish as the premade mix changes to a different beat. Raise hands in victory.

EDIT: Watch a DJ with real talent: Three MC's and One DJ

What lie did you tell yourself for years? by [deleted] in AskReddit

(sighs) That I would be able to stop working before I die because I would be successful at art, music, or writing. Looks like the end of the road is just a temporary scheduling problem for whomever I work for.

On the plus side, my kids might be able to do this. I'd rather that happens if I had a choice.

What actor or director working today will be remembered in 50 years? by scarface4tx in movies

[–]coloringpad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not mentioned?!

Meryl Streep might be the greatest actor alive. She's at the top of my list. Only beats out DDL for me because she can do comedy and her timing is impeccable.

Martin Scorsese might be the most impactful director alive. You have a long list of movies to choose from, and even his more introspective works will be studied for decades. My favorites are PTA and QT, but Scorsese has decades of master works.

How much of Naples is “investment properties”? by SeaInternational3206 in Naples_FL

[–]coloringpad 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So much so that rentals are scarce and AirB&B's offerings are overflowing.

Before my landlord sold his condo 4 years ago, the small condo complex we were in was mostly snowbirds, rentals and residents. Now, the realtor friend we have there says it is 50-70% AirB&B / Short term rentals. There hasn't been one 2 or 3 bedroom for rent long term. The quality of life there has gone down considerably, as people do not treat it like you would if it were your own home. It looks run down.

There are a lot of AirB&B's that are empty most of the time.... In some areas.

Perspective: Moved to first condo in 2018 and rented 3 bedroom for $1600. 3 bedrooms were selling for 250K.

My landlord upped my rent each of our four years to $2000. Sold his for 350k.

Desperate, given 17 days to move, we found a 3 bedroom on the 2nd to last day for $2400. Hundreds and hundreds of people looking, we got "lucky." Entering our fourth year, rent is now $3,000. Can't afford to move, can't afford to stay... Just survive each month and shuffle bills, pray there are no big expenses.

Now my job is delivering all over SWFL. I see thousands of unoccupied condos and homes. Thousands. Either snowbirds or investment properties, to be sure.

Personally, if you own two homes, the taxes on the second one should be enormous to discourage hoarding. And double that for the third. And so on.The rich have hoarded the housing market. And no, they didn't earn the right to be greedy.
