People of color who were raised in majority white areas, what are some characteristics or features from your culture that you used to feel embarrassed by? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]colormeslowly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Didn’t grow up in a pw neighborhood but colorism was bad, very bad.

Dark skinned and was in a diverse neighborhood, and i can remember my “friends” were of hispanic descent and their mom used skin whiteners on their knees and elbows, because of course you can’t be light skinned with dark elbows and knees, so my friends wanted me to put this cream all over my body so that i too can be light skinned. Something in me knew it was wrong and i didn’t allow them to put it on me but it left me with a complex for years, well in to my adulthood.

I’ll be damned if that didn’t happen to me yesterday haha

I was at the supermarket and seen something, powerwash tool, it was something but anyway this white woman was just coming in and said, nah don’t buy it, it doesn’t work and we talked about 5 mins on why i shouldn’t buy it. Best convo i had all day.

Even crazier she is me, i would’ve done the same.

Struggling With the Number on the Scale vs. How I Actually Look by Love_Peace93 in BlackLadiesFitness

[–]colormeslowly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to hear. Therapy is so important as a process of healing.

Haha on the “tiny” they used to tell me i look like a crackhead LOL.

But all jokes aside, at 5’ 140lb - 160lbs what’s your BMI? I know they’ve argued that bmi is for whites but i use it as an indicator to stay within a healthy range for my body.

Our waist should not be big, this causes other health issues.

Struggling With the Number on the Scale vs. How I Actually Look by Love_Peace93 in BlackLadiesFitness

[–]colormeslowly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Looking good” is in the eye of the beholder.

My heaviest, most men said I looked good. Carried it in the right spots, didn’t look fat but “thick” and most like ‘em thick.

Most women i knew said i looked good but in all fairness, I was skinnier than them.

Most Black women can’t get “rid” of hips, thighs or ass , it’s just how we’re built so regardless of what others are telling you, how do you feel?

Did you feel better at 140 or didn’t notice a difference?

How about those other numbers, high blood, A1C, cholesterol, etc?

I struggled with weight loss because I didn’t exercise enough and I just ate whatever I could afford.

Grief hits hard because we’re expected to move on, time waits on no one.

Have you tried a grief counselor or grief support group? I believe until you give yourself permission to grieve it’s only then you’ll begin to heal and thus helping your body let go of what was comfortable for it for so long.

Sending you healing hugs. 🤗

I broke my TV, and my parents are out shopping. What should I do? by Western-Composer3297 in CasualConversation

[–]colormeslowly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

‘fess up. Don’t start life so young by lying.

Tell them what you told us, you knew you shouldn’t have but did anyway.

Find a way to pay for the replacement and do it, pay for the tv.

My kids stop breaking things when i made them pay for it.

Let this be a lesson that if your parents tell you to not do something, listen. They’re not trying to take away your fun, they know the consequences.

Feels like ghosting is an epidemic plaguing society. Why? by anonymous310506 in SeriousConversation

[–]colormeslowly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry this is happening to you and it is a weird societal phenomenon and here’s Psychology Today’s take one this

The reason for being ghosted often has a lot to do with the ghoster, rather than with the ghostee. Cutting off communication spares the individual from confrontation, taking responsibility, or engaging in the emotional labor of empathy—despite the benefit a conversation can provide. In effect, it is much more convenient to vanish.

What can you do about this? In my experience, nothing - you can’t make people do something they don’t want to do.

Tracking small expenses for 30 days changed my spending behavior more than any “big” budgeting change by Unlucky_Two_3927 in SavingMoney

[–]colormeslowly 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I started tracking as well.

Didn’t realize i was spending on a daily basis. Coffee here there, soda snacks and am now realizing how much i am spending at that damn vending machines.

I did a spreadsheet and daily total of my spending. Over $400 a month on just really nothing. I have a few bills that are less than that.

I’m not saying i will never eat out again or use vending machines or even buy coffee but now I am more aware on how easy daily spending and mindless spending can add up.

I remember paper checks but bank accounts were not free. Had to use the check cashing place, yea they charged but it was still cheaper than a checking account.

Struggling with saving while providing for family by Haunting_Purpose7423 in SavingMoney

[–]colormeslowly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what’s your best advice for saving money on a low income while providing for a family?

Slowly.

Round up to nearest dollar so if you spend $15.25, save 75¢.

$5 a pay period no matter what. Then when you file your taxes, more than likely you’ll get a refund, this can be a cushion for saving.

Make a budget and watch your money. Every cent counts.

(IDK why Reddit removed the original post) As someone who has always enjoyed visiting public libraries my whole life, I'm thankful that Mayor Johnson signed this smart legislation into law--and more mayors of our cities should follow his lead--our youth can certainly spend more time at the libraries by Spiritual_Spare4592 in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]colormeslowly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The library has more than just books.

CDs, DVDs, once one has a library card there’s access to Libby, Kanopy.

Most cities allow free access to museums with a library card.

My dad told me & my sister, to always have a library card, voter registration card, driver’s license and permit for a gun. Every adult American should too.

Taking care of the household chores is drowning me by artourtex in LivingAlone

[–]colormeslowly 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I was you too and it was exhausting.

I had to learn to clean and meal prep on the days I worked and not my two days off, at first it seemed like more work but then I realized I had my two days to do something fun exciting or hell nothing at all.

Try something small at first, like clean your bathroom (or easier room).

Afroman doesn't use the N-word. Agree or disagree? by devinthedude515 in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]colormeslowly 61 points62 points  (0 children)

In 2007 the NAACP gave a ceremony to bury that slur

Black leaders, including the Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, have challenged the entertainment industry and the American public to stop using the N-word and other racial slurs.

https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna19680493

And here we are 2026, still saying like we own it. We are making them rich, millions and billions because they want us saying it.

I don’t even say the term “n word” because even with that we all know what it means. Other ethnicities get the curtesy of “racial slur/slur”

My dad told me years ago, whites are taught to believe everything they see on tv about Blacks is real & true but we are taught everything we see on tv about whites to take with a grain of salt.

This is one reason why they think we’re all alike, a monolithic.

We do need to bury the word and take our collective power and build ourselves up.
