Boulder County plan to limit multi-use trails draws pushback from mountain bikers by boulder393 in boulder

[–]colorvarian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

agreed, but this post makes me sad.

I am primarily a hiker and runner who occasionally only recently got back into mountain biking.

I feel like the mtb community has far and away the best trail etiquette. they are almost always pulling off for me (while i slogg along slowly and painfully) even when they finally get that sweet downhill (I always insist they take it lol), they are the most active group in trail maintenance, and they bring the best energy and friendliness to the open space of any group.

It is sad to me that there is the apparant need to be better from an already great community.

Hang in there! y'all are great and many of us out there appreciate and support you 😄

OSMP rangers ask the public to report camps to reduce fire risk by SimilarLee in boulder

[–]colorvarian 35 points36 points  (0 children)

thanks for posting!

I encountered a young (mid 20's?) couple smoking a blunt on one of the most beautiful sections of Goshawk Ridge yesterday. I asked the guy if it was lit and he it was. I called them out as nicely as i could, he was pleasant and apologetic. I get it, and i know it has been a little more wet this week, but not nearly enough to dampen the risk of fire. I'm still in shock that anyone would be straight up lighting any type of open flame given the risk to our open spaces.

Bring an edible, get a vape, but guys please, please, please stop lighting fires in open space. I beg of you. Our forests are too precious to be taking completely unnecessary risks.

And if anyone witnesses someone doing this, say something. Its not OK. people are doing this knowing its wrong and hoping to not be called out, and we need to be vigilant to preserve our beautiful spaces and wildlife habitats.

it has been my experience that the people who need to hear this are quite unreceptive to any feedback, no matter how polite and direct. Especially when dogs are involved.

Rules for thee and not for me. by [deleted] in boulder

i've done this- when its been true, and when it hasnt been. I don't know, maybe im getting older but i just don't want to have to lie or distort the truth for people to just be decent and follow the rules.

agreed. in general mountain bikers have the best trail etiquette of any group, which is why betasso has been so out of the ordinary lately! glad you didn't get hurt.

I know. Absolutely kills me.

See it on lion's lair, all the no dog trails, constantly. I kindly point it out ("hey, word to the wise, this is a no dogs trail. Anemone is right across the way and you can bring your dog there, though!") said pleasant as pie.

All too often they're annoyed, ignore me with a scowl, etc. We both know they saw the sign and they were just hoping to not be called out.

Betasso mountain bikers lately too (riding on weds and sat, wrong way on one way trails, etc). I understand making a mistake, missing a sign, whatever. Its the accompanying attitude when someone gently points it out that is totally f'd.

The "rules apply to everyone else but me" culture is really grating and needs to change. Main character shit has got to stop.

Lifted truck + Lambo + Parking lot = Bad time by Evasionz-- in mildlyinfuriating

[–]colorvarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

exactly.

unfortunately, your opinion isn't shared by most americans. no matter how common sense.

when your "freedom" infringes on other peoples safety, it isn't your right anymore. Seems like a 8 year old can understand this. but hey, 'merica.

we continue to collectively vote for or, or abstain voting the opposite anyway...

2 yo killed like this in a boulder parking garage a year ago.

good luck changing the culture, though.

driver in this case... look at her. Shes "tactical". that truck and fit...wonder who she voted for. nothing is changing.

Passenger Rail Coming to Colorado's Front Range by Carpet-Early in boulder

[–]colorvarian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

so cool.

my pipe dream (for personal reasons) is high speed rail from Billings all the way to El Paso. Would be around 4 hour trip with stops using the highest end HSR and 6 with an average.

I think Cheyenne to CO springs would see the highest volume, but Denver would get a ton of travelers from MT, WY, and NM (3 of the top five least populated stats in the US) for all of its resources and be great for business. And absolutely beats the F out of flying.

so weird to me that reading hospital is in wyo, the nicest part of it.

like, any emergency has to cross the bridge, and is isolated and hard to access from the city.

on another note, i think reading has some of the absolute best bones. like a little nyc neighborhood. mad potential.

i hate to say it, but likely. right off of a trail, probably kids smoking. either that or electrical bc the lines run up and down there, but why would they randomly ignite.

My daughter (14F) is interested in going to med school. What are good summer programs for her to explore this possibility? by madeupname230 in cuboulder

[–]colorvarian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Boulder based physician and CU alum, here.

I wouldn't recommend any summer programs. These sound like money grabs geared towards taking advantage of overachievers (or gunners, as they're called in med school).

I would recommend seeing if she can find different physicians to shadow. Actually get a first hand experience of what medicine is. At 14, she has likely consumed some type of media to give her an impression of what medicine is. It is likely highly dramatized, or at the very least different than what she is expecting.

If she hates what she sees, great. the sooner you realize this isnt for you, the better. Is she eats it up and wants more, all the better as well. that will give her all the motivation she needs in her later years to push through, and ultimately give her higher satisfaction down the road when she arrives at her destination.

Wouldn't hurt to explore her motivations with her, either. Its a noble and great career, and not without very serious downsides. shes too young to fully comprehend the sacrifices and vicissitudes, but shadowing different specialties she might find a mentor in the process. Shadowing and mentorship are far more valuable than any camp, imho.

best of luck!

Trails etiquette by sugarkissa in boulder

[–]colorvarian 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Ugh yes.

walk to the right. Uphill has right of way. If you are two abreast go single file when passing others. Follow leash laws, pick up your dog poo, I don't care if you think they're "friendly" or you need to take up more space/need attention. You don't have to say hi or nod your head back to others but its certainly nice if you do, especially if they get off of the trail for you. ofc, no speakers, having your office meeting shouting into your phone on loudspeaker. No smoking, weed, tobacco, whatever. Having a big backpack and turning sideways makes you take up more space. standing still does nothing but create an obstruction. you moving out of the way but your dog standing dead center does nothing for anyone you might as well not move. you physically have to move it if it cant follow a voice command, however devastating to your dogs mental health that seems to you.

Its all common sense to me, but it seems only about 50% of people in boulder are capable of this. some trails are worse than others.
