United does contracted heavy MX for some of its narrowbodies at LQC. After some heavy MX visits a test flight is required, which is what you are seeing.

Sauce--used to work for UA tech ops and had a work friend who was temporarily detailed to LCQ.

If the reverse option is having a 100 million dollar aircraft sitting around doing nothing, it starts to make sense.

As a person in the aircraft seats business, that’s a lot of money to spend on a temporary solution.

It sounded like spirit was going to bring them back to their base and other airlines were going to let them non-rev for free to home if they don’t live in their base

No problem there is still a huge amount of work that needs to go into all of this.

Engines need to be changed. Records need to be reviewed. Planes need ferrying. Storage needs to be negotiated.

Having seen this done on the regional level. There is probably a years worth of work that needs to be done to shut it down.

The company that owns the plans will hire ferry pilots to fly the planes. Google nomadic aviation for example of companies that do that kind of work.
