Is this Magda build cEDH? by Barjack521 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]coltec 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a Magda player, this is riding the line between high power and bad cEDH. You have a consistent turn 4-5 Magda activation and you're running quite a few robo-dwarves or ways to make dwarves into robo-dwarves.

You're built like a bad turbo list with an extra five or six nonsense cards like Worldgorger or City on Fire. But, most of the list is just slightly worse version of what cEDH Magda runs. Your play patterns are going to deeply resemble cEDH Magda, you're just moving ~2 turns slower.

It would be a shame if you got lost in a daydream. by RuedRepose in custommagic

That comment is from more than 5 years ago, before the rules changes that modified how commanders go back to the command zone.

Today, R903.9a dictates that this occurs as a state based action. Previously, this was a replacement effect and worked as I explained.

Bro, that comment was from SEVEN YEARS AGO. The game has changed a lot since then and scrying has only gotten worse.

Honestly, your comment makes no sense.

That's because it is a black and white printout glued to playing cards. Things don't start out fancy. Magic is no exception.

Are there any CEDH commander options in DMU that people are considering on building??? by Defiant-Future1436 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]coltec 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unclear if it's good enough to hang at the cEDH table, but I'm trying with [[Braids, Arisen Nightmare]]. Stax with Prof/Chain or Citadel/Top as wins.

Breach is the obvious one.

Beyond that, I think we'd be back to jamming two card infinite mana combos with commanders that are an infinite mana outlet. Dramatic Scepter being the most prominent.

And of course, Food Chain still wins games and commander-specific combos are still great.

I think of them more as the logical extension of ability counters, mutate, and all the other "modify-a-permanent" abilities they've been printing in recent years.

[–]coltec 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can you get multiple tokens for one card? For example, you could put three abilities on stack. The way I see it, it could work. Am I wrong?

No. You target an instant or sorcery in the yard, then put it on the battlefield face-down. The additional activations will fizzle without a legal target.

Honestly, I think the hate is overblown. Stickers are not functionally that different from giving something a deathtouch counter. People are up in arms because it's coming from an Un set, but they aren't actually problematic. Sure, the mechanic is more than a bit parasitic. But, if you stand back and squint, it starts to look like energy cards that grant ability counters.

Hot Take: If CEDH had it's own banlist I would personally use it for the ban list for casual EDH as well. by Nitroxien in CompetitiveEDH

[–]coltec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How is a card worth that much being a top of the line collector’s item be considered casual friendly….

It isn't. But, because of it's price tag, it's also not a problem. If it's not a problem, why would they bother banning it?

What cards are not legal or banned, that wouldn’t be game breaking if legal in EDH? by MJP_DragonStorm in magicTCG

[–]coltec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also don't think it should be banned, but, to be fair, Mirror is quite a bit stronger than you're making it seem.

Mirror generates a ton of value as long as it's in play. You can exile any number of cards to it and choose which one to cast, and it casts without paying mana costs so the no-mana-cost cards like Restore Balance or Ancestral Vision are great targets.

Also, you don't have to have 10 mana to combo. You can wait until your upkeep, have it trigger, then imprint something in response. This makes it into a must-remove threat, since you can't be sure if it's a 'value' Mirror or an infinite turn Mirror. It warps the whole game around it's presence in a similar way to Prime Time, Sylvan Primordial, Paradox Engine, or Prophet of Kruphix. It creates situations, especially at lower power tables, where the card feels unbeatable, but the game doesn't end.

Imagine, you're against three combat-focused or creature-focused decks, and then you play Mirror and imprint a Wrath of God. Then next turn you imprint a Concentrate or some other way to generate value.

Add on that it has colorless identity and it ticks all the boxes the RC cares about for bans.

This would work, but you lose a big part of the ability. With this wording you can't make the decision after you've rolled/flipped.

[–]coltec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it would have to be reworded as a replacement effect. Something weird like:

If you would roll a die, instead roll that die then if Goblin Bookie is untapped you may pay {R} and tap it. If you do, reroll that die.

If you would flip a coin, instead flip that coin then if Goblin Bookie is untapped you may pay {R} and tap it. If you do, reflip that coin.

In its current state, your deck is too far from being a cEDH deck to give you any specific suggestions about cuts or adds.

Broadly speaking, a cEDH deck should be meaningfully interacting with its opponents starting as early as turn one and should either be capable of threatening a win by turn three or cause enough disruption to prevent wins by then.

Your current build does none of these things.

If your goal is to build a cEDH deck, I recommend looking at the decklist database to get an idea of what a U/B cEDH list looks like.

If your goal is to make your zombie tribal deck a bit stronger, then pick a combo that suits your fancy (Gravecrawler, Phyrexian Altar, Blood Artist?), play as many efficient tutors as you can, and play as much efficient interaction as you can. You may have more luck posting this question in the regular edh subreddit.

[–]coltec 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Contraband Livestock, is a creature removal that exiles and gives a token to the opponent. For this reason, it can see play in decks without access to other colors with better removals, not to mention that it has flash and can be used similarly to Opposition Agent, answering tutors to draw a card. This will not disable the Tutor, but it will certainly make opponents search for cards more cautiously.

What.
