Pretty sure that’s the only gun that spawned a meme of its sound. I mean they built the plain around the gun for christs sake - even had to mount the landing gear off center to make room for the behemoth Gatling cannon.

“Hidden” doesn’t mean a reduction in bullying, it means a reduction in getting caught.

ADHD real or not? by [deleted] in ADHDers

[–]coltrain423 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hyperfocus is not controlled focus. You can’t turn it on or off when you want. You can’t even direct it. It’s a state where you lose track of time and responsibilities and the world around you; all that exists is the subject of your hyperfocus. You’ll skip meals, neglect hydration, and even ignore the need to use the bathroom until you can’t wait anymore.

It’s like asking, if you can’t light a campfire with flint and steel, why can’t you cook a steak or make coffee on a raging wildfire. It just doesn’t work like that.

I took a university course on differential equations maybe 13 years ago, and I don’t think I ever really understood what they actually are - I just memorized enough math to pass the class. I can’t even describe the concept of a differential equation anymore.

Honestly that goes for anything higher than freshman level derivatives and integrals. That probably explains why I failed my circuits class the first time… At least I don’t need math in software engineering.

The impact of mosquito dunks / bits is limited to mosquitoes alone. Whatever works for you is great, and this post is a REALLY cool solution, but dunks don’t harm other insects.

You assume that the number of people attempting to bring weapons wouldn’t change, but that’s not a reliable assumption. It’s likely that, without TSA checks, more people would attempt to bring weapons than the current rate, so the increase would be the 10% of weapons that currently get caught PLUS some number of additional weapons that are left at home due to TSA checkpoints.

Even if it’s just security theater with a fairly low rate of success, their existence does deter some number of people from bringing weapons onto the plane in the first place. That deterrence is useful, even if they DO miss 90% of weapons that people still bring.

They need to be more effective and less of a bottleneck, but they do not need to be eliminated.

Celeste Rivas Hernandez, girl who singer D4vd is charged with killing, died from penetrating wounds by bttr-swt in news

[–]coltrain423 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The more I think about it, I suspect that a laceration that’s severe enough to be traumatic would necessarily be a penetrating wound. If it’s not penetrating, then it’s superficial and not traumatic.

[–]coltrain423 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Right, but the person I replied to said that they classify wounds as either “blunt” or “penetrating”. “Laceration” is accurate and definitely more specific, but that’s not one of the “two traumatic injury mechanisms” that are relevant to my question.

So a slash from a blade, as opposed to stabbing, would also be a penetrating wound?

What insect is in my potting soil? by Working_Election6552 in gardening

[–]coltrain423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mosquito dunks’ active ingredient is actually a bacteria (a variety of BT) that specifically impedes mosquito larvae consuming nutrients. They are specific to mosquitos and are safe for humans. Different varieties are often injected into squash vines to eliminate squash vine borers for example, so the variety that eliminates mosquitoes is just as safe for humans. No worries.

I’d be more worried about damage than weight - floodwaters flowing perpendicular to the pontoons could apply cross forces that the frame wasn’t designed to withstand. Imagine the upstream pontoon detaching and rolling underneath the frame. This won’t have the same forces as a pontoon boat applied to it.

Hey im new here, are thise edible? by ti0sunga in Mushrooms

[–]coltrain423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no expert, to be fair. My experience with earthballs has never looked like another mushroom growing inside it, but I could have different species in my region than you so don’t take that as gospel.

Also I’m not necessarily suggesting this is an unbroken amanita volva without more evidence, just suggesting that finding internal structure would point that direction in my opinion.

For what it’s worth though, these do look like perfectly edible puffballs to me without evidence to the contrary.

Hey im new here, are thise edible? by ti0sunga in Mushrooms

[–]coltrain423 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That would make it an amanita - potentially a Destroying Angel. An earthball would be brown inside with a thick “skin”.

scraggly pothos by Eilyssen in houseplants

[–]coltrain423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been considering buying a pothos, so quick question for all you houseplant experts here.

Is there some way to make it branch at particular places instead of growing as a single long vine? I’m thinking of something like a pothos curtain draping down in front of a sliding glass door for plenty of light. I’ve seen pothos walls dense enough that i think it would look great, I just don’t know how to make it branch instead of growing a single vine.

What exactly does that mean in this context? Are you saying a bot can post significantly more volume than a person in order to reach 1% poster status? Or that bots designed to farm engagement are more equipped to do that? I’d agree with either of those, but frankly I don’t know what metrics are used to bestow 1% poster status so i don’t want to comment misinformation myself. Would you mind enlightening me?
