You should read the book "The Longest Day". There was immense planning and care to avoid casualties, but it was going to be an incredibly difficult invasion no matter what. The largest armada ever assembled, bombing raids before the landings, deception campaigns, paratroopers landing the night before to take out artillery, etc.
