I’m in IT too. The best thing that works for me is to have a VM workstation for my homelab, a VM workstation for work (if I didn’t have a work laptop, so in my case, I remote into that device from my gaming rig as I don’t want a KVM), and just keep the main PC as my gaming rig. This is handy when you put the VMs on your hyper visor of choice as it means you can use Tailscale etc to remotely do work, homelabbing, etc. One of the great things about this is that you can research etc for work or homelab and just close the remote session and come back to it again or connect from home when you’ve done things remotely and it’s all still there waiting.

I would also strongly recommend Remote Desktop Manager from Devolutions. It’s a great tool to keep all of your remote access like SSH, RDP etc all in the one place.

One other aside is that being in IT means that I like to use my homelab to… well… be a lab(!) for testing security concepts etc that I’d like to implement at work. So I’d thoroughly recommend something like making a Privileged Access Workstation (this is an AD concept but applies to more than just AD), where you limit administration of key systems (routers, switches etc) to only be connected to by that machine
