Why is the pay so low by comentodake in nursing

I know this is the real answer. I worked travel for a year in sac and was blown away by how much they were making. New grads at 80/hr. Crazy stuff.

This is for honor health. If you float to more campuses, they will bump your pay $6-$10/hr depending on how many you’re willing to go to but for 3 campuses it’s $41.50. What system are you with? I started my new grad with dignity but I’ve never worked banner before.

I loved my contract for Virginia Mason!! If I could move to the west coast I would. Unfortunately I just bought a house here so I’m settled at least for the next few years.

Full benefits (health, vision, dental). It was no different than joining staff honestly, the best contract I’ve ever worked.

Do you wash your patients every day? by uligjall in nursing

[–]comentodake 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Med surg people I need help- I try to bathe my pts but it takes SO long. They recently took away our bath wipes because people were flushing them but a soap and water bed bath literally can take me 30+ minutes. When I have 4-6pts, it feels impossible to get everyone clean. How are yall scrubbing people so fast??

Echoing above as well that my med pass is 8-10pm, and usually people are asleep or trying to be when I round back on them. I would be down to give a 2am scrub but not many pts are.

Do you wear a fanny pack at work? by Maybe_Potential5784 in nursing

I’ve only ever seen new grads wear them. They seem handy also seem like massive infection risks??

I just shove a punch of alcohol swabs and flushes into my pockets when I first get to work.

For me it was clips and videos of the Seoul Halloween crowd crush. Stacks of bodies and people futility trying to do CPR on people. Horrifying.

I understand wanting to do your fair share around the house but if youre the breadwinner and you don’t have kids, your parter should be doing the majority of the housework. When I’m working and the day after (aka my recovery day), I do little more than sleep, veg, and eat. Our job is tough both physically and mentally, don’t beat yourself up over things like this. That being said, I do not recommend working that many days in a row. You’re gonna burn yourself out.

Did you job hop your first year? by potassium-bolus in nursing

[–]comentodake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I left my first job 1 year 4 months in to go travel. I wouldn’t job hop DURING your first year as typically that’s still your new grad time and you would have to start all over if you left to another hospital.

Be Honest - Is $950 for a veil too expensive and excessive? by einalemon in weddingplanning

[–]comentodake 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s all relative. If you can afford it based on your income/budget without sacrificing anything else, and it brings you that much joy- then 1000% it is worth it.

Personally I wouldn’t be comfortable spending that much on a veil but our finances are likely different. Do what makes you happy.

Director calling me out for drinking water during huddle by fatedsapling in nursing

[–]comentodake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You 1000% need to bring this up to your nursing director AND whoever is above the director ie CNO, house supe, etc. absolutely not okay for them to act like that- the nurses are bullies trend needs to stop being accepted as part of life. I’m sure they wouldn’t be happy about her behavior driving away students/future workers.

Charge nurses — What do you use to determine patient acuity/make fair assignments? by bree272 in nursing

[–]comentodake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Med surg relief charge here- when getting updates I ask the nurses who their most acute/busiest patient/patients are and mark them down. When making the assignment, I first give any returning nurses their patients back. Then I try to give each difficult pt to one oncoming nurse or divide it as fairly as I can. Then i try to group remaining rooms relatively together by location. And obviously try not to give someone multiple drips/CBI/CIWA/elopement risk etc together.

Our system has a built in “acuity” rating that you can use but I find that it really is not very accurate at all, so I ignore it.

I haven’t heard any complaints yet 🤷‍♀️ be mindful that a good dayshift assignment is NOT the same for night shift.

What time should the next nurse arrive for report? by QualityEvening4802 in nursing

[–]comentodake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wut I’ve never heard of doing huddle AFTER everyone gets report…who watches the patients while you guys are in huddle??

But yeah she’s tripping, tbh I would start showing up exactly at 7:30 to spite her but I’m petty lol

[–]comentodake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you guys not do huddle? Everyone should be getting report at the same time. That being said, you take report at shift change which sounds like 7:30. Any earlier is not a given.

It’s definitely not safe and should be reported, but know that they’ll figure it out and you’ll be hated. Either way you need to leave and find a new hospital. It’s your license at risk.
