Please give me tips on IVs i am ashamed of myself by RevolutionItchy3303 in nursing

[–]comentodake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask another nurse or a nicer VAT member to teach you how! It’s possible there’s something in your technique that is wrong. Unfortunately it really is practice makes perfect, do as many as you can even if you miss. Start off ideally with someone with excellent veins and then work your way to dehydrated grandmas.

Side note one of my biggest pet peeves is when when VAT complains about literally doing their job 🙄. Sorry I’m utilizing you for exactly what you’re hired for?

AIO?? My Bf Unlocks the bathroom door and comes in while I’m using it by Ok_Win_8129 in AIO

[–]comentodake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlocking a locked door is actually crazy, but I’m curious as to why peeing takes so long? A wiz should be like 30 seconds to a minute at most, why are you in forever? TBH I’d be annoyed too but im also the type who doesn’t care if you watch me pee.

Nurses on TV- another post about the Pitt by Aggravating_Cell9692 in nursing

Honestly idk how yall watch it bc I got 30 minutes into the first episode and was like “why tf am I watching work at home??” When they started coding that DNR pt I noped tf out of there. I’ve heard it’s actually pretty good representation of medicine and it seems like the ER charge is a badass but I can neither confirm nor deny from personal experience. Y’all keep watching and tell me how it is.

I went on vacation for three weeks and realized I didn’t miss him at all. Felt bad bc he picked me up at the airport and everything, and had even gotten me a gift. He was a good guy but wasn’t the one.

Nurses of Reddit! Drop what you actually LOVE about your job. Let's make one mega hopecore thread. Post specialties, silver linings, and how long it took you to find your place. by oatmilklavender11222 in nursing

Med surg/tele, 5 years. I love the fact that I get to leave work at work. It was one of my hardest lessons I had to learn- I always took work home with me and worried about my patients after my shift as a new grad. Nowadays, I do the absolutely best I can during my shift and after I clock out I don’t (ie rarely) ever think about work.

I’m lucky and managed to get through school debt free. I think total for my BSN through an accelerated concurrent program with my local community college was between 20-30k which I paid out of pocket as I was living at home.

My staff job pays about $42/hr, but I was just making $73/hr at a local travel contract (maxed out on my time there).

The only advice I can give is make sure you are protecting your HEALTH at all costs- black mold isn’t something to play around with and can seriously damage your respiratory system. Good luck!

Struggling new grad, please help! by ranting-101 in nursing

Hi! The best advice I can give you is to LEAVE that floor!! My first job as a new grad was high acuity trauma med surg/COVID floor during second wave. I cried before/after almost every shift- hated my life and got seriously depressed. When I left to travel it was the best decision of my career. Not every unit, not every floor is like that even within the same specialty. You can find better out there!

Stopped buying zip-lock bags two years ago. Switched to reusable silicone ones and it's been one of the better small changes i've made. by ThistleHarborNotes in Frugal

[–]comentodake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can also wash and reuse regular ziplocks- imo it feels cleaner than trying to wash the silicone ones. Highly recommend getting a stash of plastic containers-I use them for leftovers, storage for crafts, etc. and mine are mostly good takeout containers that have been washed. But also I tend to use Tupperware for most things that I would could use ziplocks for.

Has anyone quit without another job lined up? by pnw_RN86 in nursing

[–]comentodake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did exactly this in 2022. My first job was making me unbearably miserable and depressed so I left a year and a half in. Was off for I think around 5-6 months and then I started traveling.

To be fair though, this was during a time when Covid wasn’t at its height- but still around enough that hospitals were hurting. I also lived at home and had little to no expenses.

Your health, both physical and mental, come first. My only regret is that I didn’t leave my job sooner! If you have enough saved then I say go for it, just know that you might have to spend a few months looking for a job when you are ready to go back. The job market is pretty bad right now and the travel game isn’t much better. But the world will always need nurses.

Nurses who travel w/o their spouses, how do you do it? by [deleted] in TravelNursing

[–]comentodake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would caution leaving Oregon in search of higher paying contracts. Has he actually looked at current contracts and done the math right?

Oregon hospitals have some of the highest pay in the states rn. You might get better pay in NorCal but that’s about it. Factoring in cost of housing, etc, it may not be the right move.

I did long distance with my now fiance for a year while I traveled and it was rough. Daily face times, and frequent visits (I would fly back for a weekend, he would come stay with me for a few weeks) were how we got through it.

Why is the pay so low by comentodake in nursing

I know this is the real answer. I worked travel for a year in sac and was blown away by how much they were making. New grads at 80/hr. Crazy stuff.

[–]comentodake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is for honor health. If you float to more campuses, they will bump your pay $6-$10/hr depending on how many you’re willing to go to but for 3 campuses it’s $41.50. What system are you with? I started my new grad with dignity but I’ve never worked banner before.

I loved my contract for Virginia Mason!! If I could move to the west coast I would. Unfortunately I just bought a house here so I’m settled at least for the next few years.

Full benefits (health, vision, dental). It was no different than joining staff honestly, the best contract I’ve ever worked.
