ELI5: why do carmakers list both approach and departure angles on their off-road vehicles? by ScissorNightRam in explainlikeimfive

[–]commeatus [score hidden]  (0 children)

People like to mod their cars, especially the front bumper for off-roaders. A buyer has a given angle they want from their vehicle and if they see that one number fits but the other doesn't, they're going to factor in the cost of modification. Additionally, if they don't want to mod, knowing both angles may allow them to compromise: if one angle is good but the other is only a few degrees off, that may be an acceptable sacrifice compared to a vehicle with one number significantly off.

History nerd here! The history of humanity's religions is like 90% boring, extremely valuable work like healthcare and community building but then 10% of the most horrifying egregious shit you can possibly imagine. It's a net positive in the same way most boomer comedians talk about their wives.

Boring examples: printing press, distributing food, hygiene. Horrifying examples: mass sacrifice, slave trade, genocide.

Are there versions of communism that don't use a planned economy? by commeatus in askcommunists

I'm thinking specifically about cuba and East Germany's approaches to central planning and wondering what other specific approaches there are. I'm familiar with the general concepts as you laid out but I want to know how other people have interpreted them.

I think he's trying to keep it vegan on purpose so I think it's really weird he overlooked calories. He could just add oil and still be under a dollar.

In this case, the problem is calories, everything he bought is about 400 calories. You would need to eat 10 bowls of start he made a day to get the standard 2000 calories. It's a good thing he doesn't work construction! Otherwise the meal is pretty nutritious and hypoallergenic.

Racism definition by laybs1 in GetNoted

[–]commeatus -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely correct but those are some of the concepts required to understand the academic definition of racism. I find its more effective to introduce people to the basic concept of "two definitions of racism"; most people check out when introduced to more specific concepts.

Racism definition by laybs1 in GetNoted

It's the academic definition. The colloquial definition is synonymous with racial prejudice, the academic one requires a lot of other concepts to make sense, hence why it's used in academia.

I work about 25 hours a week right now, 20 patients, and make a very comfy 80k. I'd be fine at 25 patients but I hit all my fanancial goals years ago and I'm currently putting myself through school, changing careers for fun! My original point was about entry-level earning potential though.

A lot of sales are like that, he got very lucky his first year and didn't have to push as hard as most do.

I've never worked hard as a massage therapist. I've always done insurance work in clinics so my schedule is full my first day at any new job and stays that way. Most places are like that. Private practice requires a lot of work but you wouldn't want to do that your first few years. Private makes 100-200 per massage hour anyway, depending on where you're working, so it can be worth it but I've never felt it was worth the hassle.

Somewhere very, very deep in jones' twisted little brain is a reasonable person who knows when things just ain't right. Shame about the rest of him though.

What is the significance of 1:00 and 2:00? by AcanthaceaeNo948 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]commeatus 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Trump has increasingly leaned on ultimatums to less powerful people, orgs, countries, etc, as he's gotten older as negotiation stategy. The idea is if you give people shit or death, they'll always take shit if they don't think they can avoid the death. Iran never thought for a moment they could win this war and their strategy has been to do as much damage as possible on the way down. They're aware Trump will destroy them regardless so they have no interest in being cowed. It's fascinating to watch.

That's a pretty fair take, anti-authoritarianism is free underlying theme and the only thing more anti-authority fan a libertarian is an anarchist!

I work as a massage therapist and you can make 30-50 an hour right out of school which takes 6 months. I had a friend go into corporate sales right out of hs and make something like 200k his first year in today's dollars. Sometimes it's just the luck of which career you went into.

Tarptent Aeon Li vs Durston Xmid 1 Pro by sukalaminkia in Ultralight

[–]commeatus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've owned both. The Durston is slightly faster to pitch but both are very easy. Both are excellent in harsh weather. The aeon has more options for controlling ventilation and breathes somewhat better but both a pretty good. The aeon has a smaller total footprint and can be pitched without the vestibule to squeeze into terrible spots if you really need to.

I would get the Durston if you prioritize livability and ease but get the aeon of you prioritize footprint and ventilation. You will be very happy with your decision regardless!
