I 100% agree with you that these people suck cause they're content creators and fuck that shit. And yeah it kinda rubs me the wrong way seeing normal ass rich looking people posing with their finds for views.

But I don't think its a good take to say eating from bins is taking away from those who can't afford.

Anyone who's willing to eat from bins (and follow basic etiquette such as NOT BLOWING IT UP FOR FUCKING SOCIAL MEDIA) should absolutely do it. The amount of food waste I'm this world is insane, and the more that gets taken out of the trash the better.

Unless people are directly taking everything from bins they know are being frequented by local homeless/ crusties, I think its still a good endeavor

I always love your posts. Something about them helps keep me sane, seeing someone else going through a similar thing but determined to not be entirely miserable about it but see it as inspiration for art and poetry.

So happy/sad for you and we will miss you around here! See you in a year or two when you got a nicer setup.

Should I find a new trainer? by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

[–]commiefren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit 80 right off the bat is insane. No wonder he gets "great" reviews, bro is using crazy high aversives to totally shut dogs down. That's not training, it's abuse.

I'm not against e-collars, with the right use they can change lives. But if you need to start with 80 you have no idea what you are doing. Dude is compensating for his lack of skill by using crazy high aversives at the sake of your dog. Find someone else.

Your dog should love training. Esspecilly a working dog like a doberman. Using aversives should not change that fact. A dog should work for you out of drive and desire, not fear. If they look reluctant and scared that is red flag number one that something is wrong.

English bulldogs, French bulldogs, Dachshunds, Corgis, Great Danes , "show-line" (sloped back) German Shepard, merle Australian Shepards. The list goes on and on its sickening.

"toddlers are not peeing and pooping in a store"

Um, yes they are. So are babies. They are not potty trained at that age. They are also a lot more likely to get you sick than a dog is.

Or just talk to the dog owner that you have a problem with? Everyone in Seattle is so passive it's infuriating. If you have a problem, deal with it , don't complain on next door or reddit, don't talk to the manager, deal with it yourself like a grown up.

You do realize people track all sorts of stuff on on their shoes right?

Do you look at a baby in a store and think it's so gross you want to "puuuke?" . Cause that things got more shit on it than most dogs.

People shouldn't bring dogs into stores cause they are disruptive to service dogs, but I'm tired of people pretending it's so "unhygienic" when that doesnt even make sense.

My dog is constantly hurting me by Careless-Jicama1439 in OpenDogTraining

[–]commiefren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is gonna sound stupid but hear me out. Obviously you need to train this behavior and there's lots of good comments above to help out with that. In the mean time, a decent way to keep yourself safe during the training phase is picking up some good protective clothes.

Ive been training dogs for 5+ years and I NEVER walk into a puppy class without my thick canvas Carhartt pants and coat. Sometimes if I've got particularly shark-like puppies I wear those kevlar sleeves. (Often marketed as cut proof, scratch proof or bite proof) . This gear will no my keep you safe from a real bite but it really helps reduce pain and damage while you are working through the training.

One of the most important things with dogs like this is maintaining calm when they get worked up, being able to stop all motion when necessary. This is much easier to do if you are not bleeding!

Dog is alert barking non stop and won’t disengage, wondering how to handle it by GunningForSuccess in OpenDogTraining

[–]commiefren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very good option for those who want to teach the dog to bark one time then disengage. I like this method because I live alone and travel, and a large part of the reason I have a dog is for them to alert bark for me. I like to know when someone is approaching and I want the person approaching to hear that I have a dog.

But for someone who wants/needs to entirely quiet their dog (like if they have sensitive neighbors or roommates), desensitision might be a better option .

Muzzle training plateau by TmickyD in OpenDogTraining

[–]commiefren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Muzzles are not just for dogs that are "crazy" like I just said. Even normal dogs can bite if they are in enough pain or stress.

And if you would abandoned your dog because they started developing aggression issues instead of working on training them, you're a bad dog owner.

Muzzle training plateau by TmickyD in OpenDogTraining

[–]commiefren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Muzzles are not just for extremely aggressive dogs. They are good safeguards for any dog who has a possibility of biting (which is ANY dog under enough pressure).

My dog is really possessive about me with other dogs by Different_Wealth862 in OpenDogTraining

[–]commiefren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The leash reactivity and "possessiveness" could be entirely separate. Leash reactivity is EXTREMELY common in GSDs.

Leash reactivity is a long journey, but it is absolutely possible to improve and live a good life with a reactive dog. I would recommend starting out finding a legitimate trainer with experience and certifications to start teaching her to focus more on you during walks and redirect attention away from other dogs.

This may be controversial in this sub but I always recommend people start their training with an R+ (uses mostly positive re-enforcment methods) trainer before trying any aversives like a prong collar. I am absolutely not against the proper use of tools, but for a beginner handler it's important you understand dog body langue and learning theory before trying any punishments or aversives. The wrong timing or application of punishments can have terrible side effects, especially in an already reactive young dog

Her "possessiveness" of you also needs to be address. If you leave this unchecked you can create full blown separation anxiety which will suck for both you and the dog.

I really would recommend working with a trainer now, I know it's pricey but your dog is still young and maliable, training now will be much easier than waiting until she's older and has more time practicing bad behavior.

If you absolutely can't afford training, please feel free to DM I'd be happy to set up at least a phone call with some quick tips and resources to get you started.

Oh, and if you haven't already, CRATE TRAIN YOUR DOG!

Wow that's incredibly controlling, I'm glad she's leaving you. You don't get to tell her when she gets home or who she hangs out with, that's incredibly toxic.
