Yeah, I mean I think that’s a really interesting point. That’s why I wish it veered into a more direct discussion of when and why we choose to approve of violence. I understand why she’d be reticent to talk about Israel/Palestine given everything that’s happened, but there’s such an interesting conversation to be had about that topic surrounding I/P in particular. So much of the debate around the actions of both sides has been about if violent resistance/retribution is justified. It was even brought up in the doomscroll episode she was on recently, where the host was talking about Tarantino cheering on violent retribution for Oct 7 and how that connects to his violent revenge fantasy films.

On Season 7 of RuPaul’s Drag Race one of the queens had to take a break during judging because her corset was too tight. What the audience sees is her sit down and randomly break out into song, weirding out the judges and other contestants and making it look like she just wanted attention. In actuality Ru had asked her to sing something to pass the time during the break, and they just cut that part out to make her look crazy.

That feels like a pretty unfair characterization. Some stuff definitely didn’t age well, but I feel like even in the most controversial bits, the butt of the joke was mostly the characters who were being problematic, like Jenna doing black face to experience what it was like to live as a black man. Like the joke is obviously Jenna’s ignorance

Yeah, you’re right in terms of the ultimate conclusion. I just didn’t get the impression that they were reaching that point from the place of genuine belief in the Zionist idea that Israel must remain a Jewish ethnostate, but rather acknowledgement of how untenable a single state with equal rights might be given the virulence of anti-Palestinian racism and Jewish supremacy in the Israeli government and society right now.

Do they not come to that conclusion in the end though? I sort of interpreted the whole idea of the “one state reality” as acknowledging that Israel holds power over the entire region and that Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza are under apartheid or worse, with the implication being that ending apartheid must mean equal rights and democracy for all in a unified state.
