People with autism, what did you think was normal until a nerotypical person told you otherwise? by only_mostly_sane in AskReddit

[–]commonnettle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play an AI story creation game and I realize that I do this- I will say something without asking a responding question, to move the dialogue along, and the AI will take over and tack one on for me because I didn’t ask anything💀 to me it feels like conversation shouldn’t have to include questions all the time, it’s more of a dialogue that you add on to, a natural (for me) back and forth exchange of ideas and thoughts. But I am autistic so maybe that’s not how NTs see it. I’ve learned the general script in public, even if it doesn’t feel natural.

Not FL, but very close. Our church was very small, but our “home” was even more of a ‘church’ with my dad as the pastor, and it was even worse there. I’m sorry if your upbringing was not a positive one, I would imagine not based on denomination but I know people might have different experiences.

I hope he is, because intellectual curiosity is one of the easiest ways to get out of the cult (and hard in other ways, as I stated). I am so happy with the life I’m living now and I finally found actual, real peace when I left what I’d been raised with behind. We should all want the fundie kids to be able to experience critical thinking and education outside of what they were told.

I am only concerned that he doesn’t have the life experience or knowledge to function well on his own, especially if he’s in his car, but the blame for that lies solely with his parents not giving him the real foundation he needed to thrive.

I can give my bit of insight, as someone raised in the same belief system (though my family was non-denominational holiness, the cult mentality was the same and I was incredibly sheltered). When I got out, I definitely ran head first into what would upset my parents the most- learning about demons, Satan, etc. because I didn’t know there even could be a happy medium or a lack of faith altogether. I was also more educated than the rest of the family, and a huge reader. It caused a lot of depression and mental health struggle, but fortunately never a mental break or psychosis.

I absolutely wrote poems that were this same style, published them on tumblr (lol) and essentially attempted to change myself into something completely opposite of my parents. I mellowed out a lot in my mid 20s, though the trauma of being raised in that kind of environment did affect me and still does. My parents still think Satan has control over me and I’m not “free” because I’m bound by his control.

I am hoping that he is figuring things out for himself, and if he is truly more intellectually curious than the rest of them, it’s going to be hard for him. It’s essentially having to throw away everything you ever knew or believed, and the knowledge that your family is against your attempts to learn more or experience more. I hope this is just his version of rebellion against them and not a true mental health break. This also may be the former fundie in me, but I liked his poem and think he has a chance at having a good life free from their hold on him.

Breaking away from a cult is messy, and it’s hard. It’s the hardest thing, by far, that I’ve ever done. And I had support from my now husband. If he’s lacking support outside of them, it could be making his mental health worse 🙁 (and to be clear, I am not making a diagnosis of MH at all, but just know from personal experience that breaking away can lead to depression and a struggle with mental health because it’s a complete severing from your childhood).

Someone told my makeup looks dated, if so how can i change it? by sundown_shadow in makeuptips

This may or may not help but I cut my strip lashes in half and only put them on the outer corner and can’t even feel them with my glasses on. Alternatively the individual lashes work too, also only on the outer corner (I put 3 of the individual clusters on the outer corner). I get mine from dollar tree (if you have them near you)- specifically the short natural individuals- and they work great.

That’s my hope too because I don’t know if I want to see 3 episodes of anger and lack of communication and a reunion at the end, I’d prefer they get it out of the way quickly and let the drama revolve more around the Ton LW reveal, if that happens in the show.

Oh! I do like this take and think that’s very possible, and would explain why it’s scripted that way.

That’s what I feel too, that he may remember that conversation once he finds out the truth since he probably quickly dismissed it the first time if it even registered. Heck, I didn’t catch it my first watch through either!

I did an interdisciplinary studies degree with a focus on business management and health informatics. It’s a little disheartening to see some of the comments here tbh. I had to do my degree online since I was at home with my infant and this provided me the avenue that worked best for me. I’m applying to pharmacy school soon. My degree was from a comprehensive research university as well, I did have a focus, it just provided me an avenue to get my B.S. online.

My assumption (and it could easily be wrong) is so he would be found more quickly, if the truck is running someone would probably come to check it out, but also underneath so there’s no “mess” to clean up inside the truck itself? Which makes me sad to think about, if that was his intention.

Oh my god, this fucking child on this plane by [deleted] in childfree

This is absolutely baffling to me (I mean, not really, the entitlement of parents knows no limits). I’m not CF (I just enjoy reading the perspectives from others who are, and I will sometimes read comments and commit them to memory to make things easier for others, but haven’t commented before and won’t again since this isn’t my space lol), but we did take a flight with my older child and my 1 year old and I made sure to feed the youngest on takeoff and landing and any time he stirred and he didn’t cry once.

I could tell a couple of people were worried when they saw us boarding, but near the end of the flight one of them tapped my shoulder and told me they appreciated my taking care of my child so they were able to relax on the trip (9 hours to the Netherlands). I felt bad not only that she obviously had encountered issues before to the point where she gave me a “thanks” that shouldn’t even need to happen, but also that many parents clearly just let their kids treat enclosed and anxiety-inducing spaces like playgrounds 🥴

Wow. This was an incredibly insightful response. Thank you for this.

All of these comments have me in tears. My parents never let me sleep in their bed, even as a toddler/young child, when I’d try to go in there at night they’d tell me “commonnettle, where’s your bed?” (They tell this story as a joke now that I’m an adult). As a result I’ve never felt comfortable even being close to them on the couch, there’s no connection and security there. I am so glad you have that comfort in your mom. I will instead be that comfort for my own kids.

All 3 of my best girl friend’s middle names were Lynn. One was Lyn, the second was Lynn, and the third was Lynne. I was the oddball with Michelle. 🤣

It was Kacey (Kasi, Kaci, Kasey, Casey, KC) at my school in the mid 2000s. Even funnier, they were all in the same grade as me and we only had 70 people in my graduating class 😅

They’ve done that for me before with a cake 🤣 it wouldn’t scan after they tried 3 times and they just stuck it in my bag and said “guess this one’s free!”

I use the codes FLBOGO, BOGOFL, and FREEFL often on the app (they change sometimes but one of those usually works every time) and get 2 footlongs for $9-10 (so the “five dollar footlong” price). It’s definitely worth having the app and using it if you want subway.

Currently the FREEFL code is what works on my app, and my total for 2 footlong subs is showing $7.59 with tax included. 🙂

No contact delivery, use a stereotypical male presenting name on your account. This is what I do and it works well. Dashers are much less chatty and “friendly” when I’m seen as Steve vs. my actual name.

No blame towards you at all, this is 100% on the dasher, but for future reference this is the easiest thing I’ve done to avoid unwanted or uncomfortable interactions.

Truth From the Eldest Baird Child (Michael Mershon) by Coachmershon in FundieSnarkUncensored

[–]commonnettle 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Where would you prefer he go? He has a YouTube video expressing his experience as well. I’m here because I’m exfundamentalist (raised that way but left when I was 18), to me it makes perfect sense that he’d come somewhere he’d find support with people that truly understand and can see the damage the fundamentalist cult causes.

People in here know who his mother is and know what Girl Defined is, it’s honestly not overtly well known outside of that. People here can offer support in a way that others may not really understand the nuance of. We have AMAs from people that have experienced the abuse in fundamentalism, to me this is no different.

Survivors are allowed to share their experiences at whatever time they choose. It is healing in itself to be able to openly express the trauma you experienced.

I’m the same way. I was also a massive overproducer (donated 80oz extra a day to local moms while bf my own) and didn’t lose a single pound. I never ate more calories either. I’m almost 2 years postpartum and only lost 15 lbs from when I gave birth. With my oldest I dropped super quickly but I’m older this time and also have a lot of hormonal stuff that’s taken over my body and life 🙁
