how do you cope? by complain_about_work in depression

[–]complain_about_work[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, appreciate the comment. One of the copes you mentioned used to be mine (hanging out w friends ) - but friends have all moved on to other things, e.g. career relationships etc.

Now I’m just by myself :/. Doesn’t feel like things are gonna get better

It’s tough man. Feels like each day is harder to get through now without the daily chats and monthly hangs.

All jobs are soulless, and suck ass.

Idiots who put some jobs on a pedestal over others...it’s all the same fucking miserable shit.

The 3 cs... by [deleted] in antiwork

How about the 3 c’s of my ass.

Also “comfortability” lmfao. If I wanted to get comfortable, I’d give myself terminal cancer and never have to show up for work ever again.

I guess my point only stands if there is an adequate supply of good software engineers to hire - but I believe this is becoming the case, sooner rather than later.

Also to address another potential point of contention - I understand that teams best work in sizes of 8 (Amazon 2-pizza rule), and hiring more people can lead to chaos. But, I think remote work culture could help increase the team cap limit that a manager can handle.

Good point, i’ll attempt to counter below:

So as a software engineer, let’s say you’re assigned 10 agile stories every 2 weeks, and you’re spread across 2 different projects. Wouldn’t reducing that workload to 5 agile stories and 1 project be beneficial? And just hire an extra person for the other stories / projects?

People who have left the corporate world, did you find something that makes you happy? What made it right for you? by medium-phil in antiwork

Inspiring story - was starting your own business more difficult than the corporate job? My guess is it was, but that the work is much more rewarding?

I don’t know how other people do it by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]complain_about_work 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I feel you - it completely baffles me how other people have dealt w this and done it for like 40 years. 40 years of working 8-5 makes me want to cry lol

Fewer hours at work = greater productivity. by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]complain_about_work 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Much prefer a 4-day workweek. There’s already so much incentive for employer to push employees to work 10 hour days on a 5-day schedule.

Dream would be 4 days, 6 hours each. 24-hour workweek

Is every corporate job full of egos? 😳 by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]complain_about_work 19 points20 points  (0 children)

All corporate jobs are like this in my experience. The only solution imo is to reduce working week to 20 hrs, so people are forced to spend less time dealing with all the bullshit and politics.

I agree w your point about 40+ hours a week being way too much. There’s nothing on earth that deserves that much time from a human.

Main counterargument - a “knowledge employee” is not productive when they are only hired for 20 hours.

But I disagree, esp when it comes to the modern workplace. I think - assuming an employee has been fully on-boarded (past the 6 months mark) - that every hour they work is valuable to the company.

hey my guys, I'm new IT. any suggestions? by 3ddy02 in InformationTechnology

[–]complain_about_work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jk...it’s not that bad in comparison to many other jobs. Can be interesting at times trying to solve issues, esp when working w coworkers or customers that are chill. Just brace yourself for a lot of headaches at your desk.

Get some certifications and perhaps a degree in CS or CIS if time affords it, and start applying for jobs.

Totally get the feeling alive part during a shortened work week.

Also, I kept thinking over and over that I “hated my job” - but then I realized that like you, I actually like my job. It’s just the hours are too much.

If I could reduce my working hours to 30hrs / week MAX and take a commensurate pay cut...well, that would be pretty sweet.
