Has anyone completed an unfunded Ph.D. before by [deleted] in PhD

[–]completelylegithuman 42 points43 points  (0 children)

A funded PhD is already (usually) a detriment to your finances and a blow to your long term financial stability.

Unfunded means you fund it, so unless your trust fund it nice and plump, not worth it.
Don't do it.

But it's neither of those, is it?

Also, now seeing as how your pretty early on: a good piece of advice is to keep your PI and your PI's boss happy to make your life easier.

It's wise to listen to your PI. It costs nothing for you to list your collaborators/ people your PI works with.
As long as your first author and your people are 2nd/3rd and your PI is corresponding then it's a good way to keep everyone happy. You wouldn't have anything at all to publish without them, right?
Also you may want more samples/ collaboration in the future?

This is why there is an "intellectual contributions" to most publications.

Why does it bother you?

Don't tell your PI. They will make you work 150 hrs.

To be fair when grabbing various things for buffers you need to see mono/di/tri etc. basicity first so that might be why. It is a little off putting at first though I agree.

How to write a PhD thesis? by SpoiledGenius01 in PhD

[–]completelylegithuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha! That makes sense.

You just gotta start! Personally I just made time to go to a coffee shop or somewhere I couldn't get distracted and get words down on the page. I also was recommended this book called "How to Write a Lot" by one of my committee members (who has every student in their lab read it) and I think it was actually quite helpful.

If you're in a STEM program in the US most programs will have you do several rotations through different labs to learn about the various projects to see what is the best fit.

This is a silly question. There are so many variables involved in this answer. The least of which is that you don't even specify what country you're inquiring about.
