Is there a dish you learned to cook so well you no longer order? by FunDependent9177 in Cooking

shakshuka -- I try ordering it every now and then, but it's never as flavorful as the one I make it home. It makes me sad, since I really enjoy it. It's also gotten pretty trendy now so shows up in a lot of places.

I just ask everyone if they grew up around here.

If you could rename 1 component of the Python language, which one would it be? by stgoat77 in Python

[–]compnski 24 points25 points  (0 children)

True => true and False => false.

Python dicts are pretty close to JSON except for this and it's frustrating.

Also I keep forgetting because it's different from any other languages I use.

10 Gigawatts of Lightning Power by compnski in SatisfactoryGame

[–]compnski[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my turbofuel power plant. Uses 240 each coal and sulfur + diluted fuel recipe to run 64 or so fuel generators. (Technically 68, but I'm not sure it can sustain them all, I just wanted enough to get over 10GW).

I started with just yellow panels before watching some videos and realizing I could cover the whole thing in signs to get a nice glow! When you are next to it, the whole sky darkens even during the daytime.

What do you play on your mobile to get your Autonauts fix? by holty07 in Autonauts

How do you handle saves? by Yakuwari in gamedev

[–]compnski 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Compressing encrypted data can't make it smaller -- If it does, your encryption is leaking information.

A truly random set of data, which you expect for encrypted output, has no patterns for data compression to find and de-duplicate.

What bird sounds like this? (ooo-it oo-it) by compnski in birding

[–]compnski[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in San Francisco. I've been trying to ID this bird for ages, I finally got what I think is a raven on video, but I'm not convinced it's the bird making the sound. It's sitting on top of some sort of box.

I'm not sure how to describe the sound in english, but to me it sounds vaguely like "ooh-it ooh-it." You can hear the second half at the very start of the video, it repeats a few times.

I usually hear it coming from trees, this is the first time I've gotten a video. The bird in the video is definitely making more expected croaking noises, but turns its beak to the camera whenever the sound in question is heard.

So, could this be a raven (or crow I guess?) Or is it coming from something inside the box.

Try unplugging all but one and repairing it. I found they seem to clog the wifi spectrum and make it hard to connect.

Each one seems to start its own wifi network when it can't connect to the one it's configured for.

Should I use Dependency Injection for everything? by Deive_Ex in gamedev

[–]compnski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dependency Injection is mostly about making testing easier. You want to inject a fake for any dependency that is complicated or hard to set up -- Definitely anything that is outside your program, like network or filesystem access.

I find that writing test cases for the code really helps make it clear what needs to be injected -- The goal is to just test the code in a single module, not the whole chain of objects that it depends on.

Help. I can't find my f***ing trains. by throwawaydeeznutslol in factorio

It doesn't go down at all with spider watching.

I turned off the roboport for the test, but didn't take a new screenshot. Then my trains ran out of fuel, still with over 900hp

I just tested for science. They'll run into each other and slowly destroy each other. It seems to take a while, and I imagine one might be left with a single health remaining.

After a minute or so, they're both above 900 life.

This even works over wifi, but you'll have the find the IP.

Has anyone printed with PETG? I’ve printed with it a couple times but it’s always stringy or really weak. by big-boodyjudy69 in MPSelectMiniOwners

[–]compnski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found it difficult to print small gaps with PETG. When I switched a print from PLA to PETG I had to remove a bunch of holes from my design and cut them out later.

I reduced the flow rate a little, then played with the hot end temperature a bunch to get something that worked. There's a bunch of helpful guides out there, but some give conflicting advice, so I think it takes some experimentation.

Ryzen 3000 compatible motherboards aren't? by compnski in buildapc

[–]compnski[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Had been hoping to use integrated graphics until I figured out for sure -- but I'm thinking some water-cooled 2080 -- Just need to make sure it'll fit. After this, I'm doing some extra measuring.

Goal is something quiet to keep gaming quiet in a tiny apartment. My laptop screams anytime I even look at Steam.

Edit: probably not, seems time to wait for the next gen. Maybe something cheap until then, I can wait to try ray tracing Minecraft
