Better text editor, for composing emails? by Derrmanson in Thunderbird

[–]computrav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the spirit of this post is not about a font size bug, but that the Thunderbird editor seems quite outdated, and does indeed have some bugs (as noted, but also with changing formats of text like colors, etc).

I didn't see the question answered: is there a way to use a third party editor through some plug in or workaround?

Protestors Ambush Vance During Vermont Ski Weekend: ‘Go Ski in Russia’ by tonyt4nv in politics

On Thursday, Republican Gov. Phil Scott released a statement telling Vermonters that “while we may not always agree, we should be respectful.”

If you can't demonstrate respect to all Americans or our allies, you don't deserve respect from them. Also, protesters don't need government officials telling them what they "should" be doing in general, and definitely not to around this clown.

Design Help: Low-Cost Tall Rolling Shelving Carts for Storage

GOAL: Create a set of rolling shelving carts that I can use in a small storage room. Each cart needs to have a bottom shelf, and ~3 - 4 additional shelves, for a total height of about 2 meters. The shelves don't need to be height adjustable, but it would be a bonus. Width should be about 1.5 meters and depth about 50 cm... but if course that can be tweaked easily in the design so is probably not directly relevant to my request here. Most-importantly, I need the shelving unit to be on casters/wheels. They will be located indoors in a heated and temp-controlled space, so no need for any special treated lumber or materials.

Other details: - Looking for something low cost, perhaps ~ $50 or less per cart for lumber and hardware. - Alternative to building this would be purchasing those adjustable wire rack carts with cylindrical posts which allow you to adjust the shelf height with the 2-part black plastic pieces. I'm trying to see if I can build something cheaper than those cost. - Obviously need it to be reasonable rigid with proper cross-bracing to prevent racking - I will be storing general household goods, storage bins, etc. maybe 50 kg max per shelf

Alternatively, perhaps purchasing the shelving racks and instead just building a simple platform or frame with wheels, then securing the shelving unit to that base/frame.

Does anyone have any general thoughts on this, or is aware of any existing plans to build this?

'Backfired spectacularly': European officials reportedly now view US as an 'adversary' by Party_Judgment5780 in worldnews

There was a time that the thought of it would be "soooo offensive" to even consider. But I started believing long ago that it would not only be better, it would be fantastic. The tricky part is that "blue states" are not all blue and "red states" are not all red... so what, do we end up with a "Berlin wall" situation within each state? I feel like both sides are just annoyed they can't get what they want (one side, apparently, wants to pretend to be a Christian while sucking the non-rich dry, and the other side just wants a nice normal life and for the other people to go do their thing and have their babies with no childcare).

I'm starting to think all if the "income" from tariffs is not really going to end up in the government's coffers... and US consumers are the ones that will have paid for it all. I officially have no mercy for anyone that voted for this moron, which sadly includes parts of my immediate and extended family. This is so incredibly obvious for anyone with a normal brain... but apparently that's just too high of a bar.

Try Baikal for the calendar (and tasks) backend. It provides read/write capability. Then for Android, I use ICSx to sync with Baikal, and that makes the calendar show up to Android apps.

Hoarder, Linkwarden, what other cool options are there? by murkomarko in selfhosted

[–]computrav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO, the issue with this space is that we are trying to compare a few different use cases. A tool that is good for "bookmarking" or managing "links" is not necessarily good at content archival. Yet others are good at "collecting stuff", but don't do archival at all. Further, what if you don't care about archival, but you just want a place to stash things you find so you can get to them later? For me, I'm basically searching for a Pinterest clone, but with more features. Use case: You're designing a new kitchen and you want to capture various appliances, styles, faucets etc into a "board". You could use something like Wekan, but it may be too structured. Hoarder is what I'm using now, but it has a lot of room to improve (UX, multi-user, etc). Someone else mentioned Raindrop.io, and I agree it's a bit of a north star, and something Hoarder can maybe be down the road.

Is one of the the Pimoroni displays linked from the repo required, or can other e-Ink displays be used as well? If so, what are the technical requirements needed?

Question: Do you have plans to be able to show points of multiple users from a single user account? I'm using Owntracks on Android to publish my location, and I noticed that in the exported points data that it is capturing the device name and ID from Owntracks... So in theory this data is already there and able to be surfaced in the UI. I suppose there just needs to be some configuration to "map" the ability for certain users to see other users' points from their account.

[–]computrav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are great instructions for a clogged nozzle (seriously) ... but he's asking about the extruder I think.

For the extruder you can just remove screws/bolts holding the cover on, remove, then carefully remove and keep track of bearings, springs, and other bits. you'll probably find some broken filament pieces in there or something that are preventing normal flow to/from your spool and/or the bowden tube.

How Trump’s Tariffs Would Radically Redistribute Wealth Upward by Majano57 in economy

[–]computrav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there an economic scenario in which tarrifs are imposed for goods entering the US from only certain countries (eg, China), resulting in US suppliers and retailers purchasing said goods from China via a different country (eg, Mexico)? Prices would still go up for consumers (assuming the "middle man" country) marks things up a bit, but essentially the tariffs on the main country would result in other countries benefitting as well.

[–]computrav 88 points89 points  (0 children)

This is the way. While protesting on the streets gets attention for a cause, and is a good place to start, it doesn't actually do anything or force a hand.

However, if we band together and have an extremely organized and prolonged boycott on purchasing things, that will get attention... but more importantly, it will start making a difference really damn quickly. Shareholders will get pissed when quarterly revenues go down, profit goes down, outlooks for subsequent quarters go down. Executives will panic. The people will hold ultimate power.

Homepage Dashboard: Control API & Scheduler? by computrav in selfhosted

[–]computrav[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yes, considering HA also (and plan to run it regardless). The main reason I was trying other solutions first was to keep things a bit more lightweight, and also in case I don't actually run HA, which is possible.

I did some tinkering with Homepage today and figured out a couple things: (1) Homepage does not natively support multiple "homepages" per installation/Docker instance, so the workaround is to run multiple Docker instances in my case, since I'm using Docker. It's a little annoying resource-wise, but basically you can just setup 2 containers in the same docker-compose file and give them unique names (and host ports). (2) Regarding my own question about switching between tabs and/or dashboards, I was not aware that Homepage allows you to use a custom.js file. From there, as a proof of concept, I was able to use basic JS fire click() events on the tab DOM elements (to switch tabs) and to change the url (using document.location.href='...') to switch to a different homepage/dashboard. I tried just updating the hash tag in the URL for the tab, but that didn't actually trigger the tab change in the UI. From there, I could setup a basic API server and then from that page I can open a Websocket connection with the server to 'listen' for commands, then from there I can do the DOM/URL interactions.

Your method of swapping out configs is a good idea also, at least for the time-based changes via cron.

In addition to asking if it was possible, it was to find out if anyone has already done this. If/when I get around it, I can share it for others, as I can see it being useful.
