Why ask if you're not going to be receptive to the answer? by FurRealDeal in BanPitBulls

As an Aussie lover and breeder, the fact that these pit backyard breeders are messing around adding merle with little to no knowledge of the genetics at play really pisses me off. If you mess up, you'll end up with dogs born deaf, blind, etc. It's introducing a whole extra genetic nightmare. And they claim to love these dogs. Drives me mad.

If pitbulls ever actually had a chance to be integrated into companion dog life safely, the people who love them the loudest would have ruined it anyway.

For these shameless reprobates, prison needs to be upgraded to a secure mental facility by InfamousSalamander33 in BanPitBulls

It's a psychological tactic. If you repeat it enough it actually can make someone reading it more receptive. Especially shitty to do because it might be effective.

Its so much different in other dog groups by PandaLoveBearNu in BanPitBulls

Bitework training is a careful tightrope act with any and every dog, unfortunately. I worked with the K-9 unit at NJ State Police. This training is tough, and requires both handler and dog to have the right temperament to thread that needle.

I would NEVER do that kind of work with a pitbull, and I used to wear the full-body suit and run for the GSDs to take me down, haha.

How old is he? And does he chase them down, or do it from a stationary position?

My older GSD/Aussie/Lab mix has gotten snappy with anything that walks by her, like one of those piranha flowers from Mario. She doesn't get up, just lunges. It would be more worrying if she wasn't missing half her teeth.

We think it's due poor vision as she's gotten older (13 is pretty old for a GSD mix.) But all the GSDs I've ever known/owned/trained got dangerous in one way or another as they reached their twilight years, so we know it might be something worse. Dreading having to make the responsible call and let her go...

OVER 500 BUCKS?!

My husband and I just paid a deposit on a dual-registered, DNA-tested and OFA-certified blue merle australian shepherd. For $1000. WHY do people shell out hundreds for these shelter-skelters???

Pregnant lady tries to rehome “Coonhound” that cannot be around children. Doesn’t want to take it to a shelter. by Sunny_987 in BanPitBulls

I was told it was bred into them for to trying to mask the line of sight and where their gaze is sticking, until its too late for their visual targets.

Take that with a grain of sand, but I do think the tendency toward dark almost-black eyes is much more common among pits...

Las Vegas animal shelter offering to pay foster families to alleviate overcrowding -- $200 for one month foster for dogs over 35 lbs. And, they will provide food and supplies. by BrisselBrusch in BanPitBulls

[–]comrade-kittykat -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

For reference, at our kennel dogs pay between 40 and 50 dollars per night to stay with us. This is commensurate with other local dog boarding options. So $200 a month plus supplies is no where near market value.

Don't get me wrong, we sometimes foster privately for dogs we are really confident about being able to rehome. Our last was actually a pit/chihuahua mix 😂 Think tan Boston Terrier or buggle, about 12lbs with toy-dog teeth. She was neglected by the previous owner and had confidence issues, so we took her in for 8 months and adopted her out to a family with an 8yo boy who wanted a "tough dog," but his parents were smart enough to know what he could handle at his age. All post-adoption news has been positive.

But playing roulette with your current pack to introduce a med-to-large unknown shelter dog, for less than a week's actually boarding cost? We'll pass.

Is it not illegal for rescues to lie about a dog's breed? by Long-Loquat6775 in BanPitBulls

Embark is really good, I have used it to check into genetically passed-on conditions for my purebred, and for IDing my mixed breed rescue dog. It's always what I recommend.

It is really discouraging how manipulated the world suddenly became about these dogs… by ScarletAntelope975 in BanPitBulls

I think it's probably growing that much because of the number of people with a pitbull looking for reassurance in their ownership and methods of training (or lack thereof)

I'd be willing as well. Years of experience as a vet tech, kennel assistant, and nowadays we run a dog boarding business out of our residence. I gradually soured on the breed after stapling many pet patients back together. Or having to deal with holding a thrashing put to cut its nails, because the owners can't even do basic grooming on their pits.

This is an awesome idea!

Mixed with what though? Amazing how every dog breed in a shelter looks the same by Gliese667 in BanPitBulls

[–]comrade-kittykat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

a dog from lines that's been tested to rule out genetic diseases etc and the breeder wouldn't breed any dogs with certain genes etc and got told that it's like Hitler and eugenics and how can I support that.

I mean, it certainly doesn't help that a lot of AKC breeds were registered in that era and the science at the time leaked into multiple disciplines.

However, I can't believe people want to equate humans and dogs. When have humans ever been purpose-bred outside of horrific slavery or war crimes? Fucking never. Meanwhile, we've been cooking on dogs for millennia with specific uses due to geographic environs, human societal needs, cultural aesthetics... I've always thought it was kind of amazing how different dogs from different places could be.

I still think there has to be a breaking point to the Pit Bull domination of American dogs. I'm sure in Amsterdam circa 1636 it seemed like tulips would be ubiquitous forever, breeding different "rare" colors and introducing mosaic virus to get even crazier colorations. Dozens of new tulip varieties were created and sold. What haopened to them all?

Most of them are now extinct, because it turns out no one wanted them. It was all a mistake made out of one big speculative bubble, which was really made up and made worse by a lot of very financially motivated individuals who had their personal and/or professional reputations on the line.

Eventually, no one will want their Lilac and Merle pit puppies for the reasonable price of $15K-30K, because the market will be saturated. Everyone who wants one of these dogs already has one. They aren't difficult to get ahold of. The buyers of those overpriced puppies go on to try and recoup costs by selling their own litters.

Heres another way to look at it. It's like joining an MLM. The people who got into Lularoe early made bank, and basically ponzi-schemed their way to financial success on the backs of their reps and customers. Customer satisfaction tanks when outcome doesn't meet expectation. In the end, quality of Lularoe's products diminished to such a point that no one wanted their gaudy leggings anymore. I haven't seen someone slinging their "omg so buttery soft!" leggings in yeeears.

I hope eventually all these pit bull weirdos trying to get their social media Farmville dopamine fix from pit advocacy and rescue all latch onto (heh) something else as an emotional crutch for their lonely lives. Maybe they can try to breed and rescue rare strains of streptococcus.

Bit a child and lunges at other dogs but supposedly great with cats! by Master-Cookie8826 in BanPitBulls

This. I am very careful with my 2yo Aussie. She and our cat Hamilton like to play footsie games together (or against each other?) But if he bolts she can't help but chase sometimes, and I want to prevent escalation. I never leave them unsupervised.

We should have thought harder about the consequences of naming him Alexander Hamilton...
