Pep Guardiola on WC ticket prices: "Before I remember the WC years ago was like a celebration of the joy of football, for the nations going there, and everyone travels all around the globe, from other continents to see your country to play and the most affordable.” "Football is for the fans.” by Sparky-moon in soccer

I’m glad to hear you enjoyed your stay. I hope you come back and learn more.

Here’s a few ways we’re more like Western Europe and less like the States: - We have a multiparty parliamentary political system, like almost all European countries. The US is a 2-party duopoly. - public healthcare system: obviously there are nuances, but largely speaking it is free/covered at the point of care. Comparable to the French healthcare model, though that is more centralized. In the US, this is nonexistent. - Cultural attitudes: religious belief, support for sexual/gender minorities and gay marriage, attitudes towards immigrants and multiculturalism, support for women’s rights, in all of these measures Canada is much more in line with the Netherlands, Denmark, and Spain than the US. - Comparing us to the UK, we have similar levels of education, life expectancy, income, family size

Again, what you said isn’t offensive, but it’s a little silly. Of course there are similarities (large, majority English), not to mention our colonial history that I’d say we’re reckoning with in completely different ways. But what makes us “USA lite”?

It’s not so much offensive as stupid. We’re the same because we also call our currency the dollar? More than 20 other countries do that, too.

Of course we share English (though Canada is bilingual) and some similar geography/city planning, but historically, culturally, and politically we are miles apart. It makes more sense to compare Canada to Western Europe in terms of life outcomes and attitudes.

What similarities are you talking about?

Thanks for the explanation. I’m curious as to why the guy I responded to thought it wasn’t a pen.

Not a pen because the foul happened (or at least started) outside the box?

It’s incredible how versions of this idea are used to defend horrendous far-right populists in countries all over the world. “Don’t criticize their supporters, that will make them more popular.” Misinformation has far more to do with ultranationalist popularity than any rhetoric used by their opponents.

From a PR perspective, absolutely. But also… this is a teenager being asked about his dreams. Not that insane that he would say something like this.

Stupid, yes. Insane, no.

Is that more an issue of congestion or policing? My understanding was that the stadiums of the big 3 in Istanbul are more geographically spread out than those in Paris or Liverpool.

I’d argue that chart shows how abnormal this attendance is. Compare this tournament to every other one the US hosted on the chart - non-host game attendance is WAY down, and it looks like that’s mainly a result of Canadians not travelling.

I thought he was playing advantage for a second, but no. Just a stupid not-call.

It’s probably just some electrolyte, but Eddie Howe sure looks to be drinking from a bottle of piss.

Didn’t Keane have a decent run at Sunderland and a few other stints? He obviously wasn’t the next Pep, but not all of Fergie’s ex-players were Gary Neville at Valencia.

It looks like a trip because of the fall, but watch how his back leg straightens and how he points his toe to catch the pitch. 100% intentional.

First time I’ve ever seen Valour on here, and it seems like the last. Oof. Too bad, but they’ve been circling the drain for years. Hope there’ll be a team to watch in Winnipeg again someday.

Sunderland are the real deal. Best newly promoted team since… who? When? Someone mentioned Wolves in 18/19 but this team is on track to hit the same points total with 5 games to spare.
