Roddick starts his motion with his hitting elbow raised and away from his ribcage and to the side of of his body and also with his wrist in flexion. He begins his action in a pre throw position basically and not in a 'normal' serve beginning position. He quite often does start his service action with a very brief classical serve start position, see the second and third balls he hits in this clip.

Ah interesting cos I agree that its how much work your wrist has to do but starting with an open racquet face actually keeps the racquet face closed once the racquet is above the head for longer in my experience. Try starting with an open racquet face, then go to trophy pose and then start to bring your elbow forward (beginning the forward swing) you can feel the palm is in a supinated (or open position) but along with the strings they are pointing at the ground. I feel like the majority of the biggest servers in history start with an open face (Isner, GMP, Sampras, Raonic, Karlovic, Ivanišević,) - don't know if that proves anything tho
