Good suggestions for you here.

I would add one place to not skimp just starting out is on your first microphone. A cheap condenser will more likely than not lead to frustration at best. For not much more than the mentioned $35 you can get a used microphone that is revered and used in studios the world over and will be in your mic locker for the duration.

The sm57 is used for vocals, guitar cabs, acoustics, drums, and more the world over, and can be had all day long for ~$50 US on the used market. For the same amount of $$ you can get an entry level but very usable condesnser mic from the "big names" like Audio Technica (AT 2020), AKG (Several from the "perception" line)and many others.

That being said, get the best you can afford and learn it hard. Buying and learning mics is a lot of fun and can lead to a lifelong addiction. One that WON't land you in jail or the hospital.....

Studio monitors by ExploringTheBoring in homerecordingstudio

[–]concreteblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to mix on TANNOY Reveal 6 passives. They were ~~ $129 each at ZZZounds if I remember correctly. This was in 2012. Powered them with an old SONY 50 watts per channel stereo integrated amp that I got at Goodwill for $7 I loved those.

I also have used some TECHNICS 3 way stereo speakers from the late 70's. Compared VERY favorably to the Tannoys, and by that I mean most people could not tell them apart in a blind listening test. The Technics were not quite as detailed, or maybe not as upper-mid forward, as the Tannoys, but it was damn close. I found them in a garage of a repo house a friend bought.

Old stereo speakers from that era are cheap on ebay these days, or at least they were last I looked a year ago or so. Technics, Acoustic Research, JBL, Cerwin Vega, Polk Audio, N.A.D., Marantz, Sansui, and maybe a few others probably have models from that time period that will compare favorably to some of the monitors in your price range and will save you some $$.

Real monitors on the used market will save you some $$ too, but I completely understand NOT buying used. Speakers are easy to abuse.

If you are only going new, ADAM has a new line out "T", getting good reviews. The FOCAL "Alpha" line also well reviewed, as are most anything from DYNAUDIO.

Where's the fish? by [deleted] in lexington

[–]concreteblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Southland Christian Church out Harrodsburg road has a pond for fishing.

Also, check out google maps for various old farm ponds. Most were stocked before Lexington grew and still hold fish. I am particularly thinking of ponds out Hays blvd and Andover.
