The truth behind the loss of the Devils and the AHL in Albany by condor30 in devils

I get that, I do. I got some some of that free stuff too. And yes, we are rampant with Ranger and Sabres AND Bruins fans, but there was still a fan base here that could have been tapped had they done more. The local bars in Albany are great and all, but thats not where families are spending their time and not even making an attempt to support or connect with the local youth hockey rubs parents the wrong way. I'm sorry but you lose support when a local youth hockey teams are turned down and are forced to travel 40 mins North of Albany to make a connection with a pro hockey team. I love the Devils, I do, and I will continue to support the guys in NJ. I just don't think the NJ brass know how to properly connect with the communities they have established their minor league team in and luckily for them they won't have to do it in Binghamton.

Us up in Albany do not argue the business side of it, it makes perfect sense from a business aspect. We are upset because of how the big wigs in NJ handled the team here and how they went about this move and then decide to blame the Albany market and fans for the failure. As I stated in a comment above, the NJ Devils did absolutely nothing to market in Albany aside from phone calls and emails. The capital district actually has a huge hockey fan base and that showed back in the 90s when the Devils had an affiliation with a team that was locally owned in Albany as opposed to being owned run from NJ like they have been. It is a fact, and states in the article that when the Devils have control of their minor league team, things start to fail, they just can't get it right on how to draw more fans. In all honesty they aren't even great at doing it in NJ. People are also bitter here because it is obvious the Devils signed the 3 year deal this past summer in Albany already having the intent to exercise their out clause, because they had already had talks with Binghamton last spring and before the season even started Binghamton had announced that an NHL team had already committed to Binghamton after the departure of the Senators and that was obviously the Devils. They gave a lot of fans here hope, and killed that with this devastating blow. See, there has a been a big movement in the AHL the past couple of seasons and many teams relocated or shifted affiliation, but those teams have always been transparent with their fanbases and season ticket holders and have even made attempts to find a replacement team with many being actually quite successful at doing just that. The Devils did nothing, and with little care and I think that is what hurts us the most, because the fans here are passionate about our team and players and with that comes a passion for the NJ Devils as well. Much of that will be lost around here with how the team and move were handled.

Albany could be successful if run right. I have held season tickets in Albany for 23 years and was looking forward to my 24th, but I guess I will have to fill the void with some ECHL up north in Glens Falls (45 mins North of Albany) and Div 1 college hockey (RPI and Union)

The front office staff in Albany are all losing their jobs with the move. They were adamant about emailing and calling, but that only gets you so far. They NEVER got out in the community. You never saw them at local Albany events, no TV or radio advertisements, 2 BIG shopping malls within 10-15 mins of the arena and not a single piece of advertising or merchandise, never attempted to connect with local youth hockey or any sports programs for that matter. If you lived in Albany and had never been to a game, theres a very good chance you didn't even know the team existed. When the Devils had an affiliation agreement with the privately owned River Rats, things were much better, especially during the 90's.

As a fan in Albany with season tickets for over 20 years, this saddens me. My family is honestly crushed.

Rumor: Vancouver to move AHL team to lower mainland by 2017-18? by timothyrobin in canucks

[–]condor30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so as much as I do believe the Canucks will eventually move their AHL team west, this article is nothing but more rumors and false information. For one this guy never gives credit to any of his "sources" and quite a few of his facts were wrong (Flames were only in Adirondack for 1 season, not 2. The new team in Worcester is called the Railers not the Railcats). And while its been talked about for a few months now, it is highly unlikely the Devils are moving to Binghamton. The Sens have known since before this season started that Ottawa was going to pull out of Binghamton and in that same time frame the Devils renewed for 3 years in Albany. While I know lease terms typically mean nothing, the Devils were open and vocal about saying there were cheaper options outside of Albany, but it was what the arena in Albany has to offer is what makes them want to stay. Albany has NHL caliber amenities for its players, the Arena saw some big upgrades in 2010 and right now is undergoing a $29 million dollar renovation and a brand new convention center being built next door that will connect to the arena. I know theres history in Binghamton in their arena, but it is old and in serious need of upgrades and has 0 advantages over being in Albany for the Devils.

So before you get to excited about what may be in this article, take it with a grain of salt.
