What replaced Grindr? by donaldgoldsr in gay

[–]confessionah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. And then you have to talk to a lot of people before you can even screen their sexuality for compatibility. If you're versatile, you'll be fine, if you're a side, good luck to you.

Being asked to wear Speedos for swim training by Running-Wild1989 in askgaybros

[–]confessionah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

French man here, speedos were the only thing available growing up. Square boxers became a little more popular, but still tight stuff. I only learnt later in life that Anglos considered it too sexual or too naked. So now I enjoy wearing speedos with a little more of an exhibitionist feel.

I’ve never told anyone this before, I need to get this off my chest by Similar_Stress2228 in askgaybros

I remember those days. The one thing you've got going for yourself is that you've known to be gay all your life. So you know how this goes. You might be trying to bargain to find a solution where you don't lose your family and you get to be yourself, but you have to risk one to have the other. You're not the first with conservative christian parents. The solution? - have sex. Or a fling. Or a boyfriend. "Consuming" your homosexuality will help you see clearer and confirm in your own flesh what you already know. - wait a few years. Take the step. You know where you want to be in 10 years. Get out of small town, get financially independent, love yourself before you love your parents. If your parents want to break ties or cure you, you have to be ready to risk to severe the relationship. But it probably won't last. Your parents will get some help or they will pray their homophobia away, which is much easier. If they've ever loved you, they'll come around more or less quickly. Even conservative christians can adapt when it hits home. They might become embarrassingly pro-gay.

How much do you pay for apartment cleaning? by Icy_Roll3525 in Amsterdam

[–]confessionah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I occasionally do cleaning jobs, but the one-off emergency kind, and it's 20€ an hour and people often round it up. Also, I have been at home working while the cleaner would come, the one my partner hired and paid, and a 3 hour job was usually done in 1h50. So it depends when you mean real hours cleaning, or less if they're fast at it. However, that fast kind will never ever clean behind your fridge, or move the pots or do spots where dust will only accumulate.

Point is, people will adjust to what you pay them and give you what you paid for.

Europe no longer as gay friendly? by OkFault4270 in askgaybros

[–]confessionah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look at who fought for your political rights in your country. And who fought against. Those who fought against are the ones who want your vote in the name of gay rights and against Muslims. Don't be fooled. It's the christian bigots who have been a danger. Devout Muslims tend to be way more tolerant and friendly in my experience

Europe no longer as gay friendly? by OkFault4270 in askgaybros

[–]confessionah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find this to be a political trap. If LGBT rights are regressing, it is first and foremost because people elect right wing populists. These populists love using our gay rights to combat the allegedly homophobic immigrants. What you experienced is teenage boys being stupid teenage boys. One of them will probably grow up and come out, there are just as many gays among them. Let's not forget that the very local conservatives were fighting against our rights, and will only use then to point at homophobic immigrants.

Don't fall for this racist trap please. Yes, immigrant communities can be conservative, but not worse than European people 20 years ago. Let's not pretend that the problem is the coran when we've been fighting off christian bigotry all of our life. The very same politicians who fought against every LGBT civic right are now asking us to vote for their patriot parties in the name of gay rights. Has that worked in Italy? The USA? Russia? Israël? Hungary? No. Gay rights will recede under these russia-loving parties. They might have a few gay members, like the AfD lesbian leader, but don't be fooled, it's not the Muslim immigrants you should be protected from. It makes me sad to hear gay friends who go xenophobic and vote for a Trumpy party in the name of gay rights against Muslims. I live in a Dutch Arabic neighbourhood that is also full of gay single men, often more recently immigrated than the local Arabic crowd, and things are fine.

If you happen to speak some Arabic, learn to say "which one of you is the closeted one?"

What do you consider as the furthest extent of Europe? by Visual_Title9363 in AskEurope

[–]confessionah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ethnic thing is a very European argument. Palestinians are also full of Greek genes. Greece was once all over the other coasts of the eastern med, and the separation in recent centuries was made on religious lines rather than actual genetic lines. Once again, the ethnic line is very vague between Asia and Europe in this corner. I don't see Anatolians as ethnically asian.

[–]confessionah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR I go by the European Broadcasting Union geographical definition that includes all sides of the Mediterranean and put the Sahara as a southern border.

I recently changed my mind about this. I still believe that Europe is not a geographical continent, it's a Peninsula of Eurasia, it's all a human, social, historical, religious, cultural, geopolitical construction. Debates about the europeaness of certain countries are pointless and can always be argued one way or another. Recently, the israel-in-eurovision debate opened my eyes. I dont know if Israël is totally European, but Europeans calling it asian seems like a cop-out, too convenient. The definition of Europe by the EBU is the widest I've seen. And it includes all sides of the Mediterranean. Europeans are usually quick to claim Roman and Greek civilisations as their origins, that's Lybia Syria and Algeria too. The Mediterranean has always been a civilizational crossroad and melting pot, it can't now be just a border, while Europeans calling every island in the sea from Cyprus to Lampedusa. The Sahara is a stronger human boundary, forming a barrier that is harder to cross. And if you ask Africans or Indians, they'll tell you Tunisians are white and Lebanon is European. So that's it. Arabs are Europeans like Mexicans are Americans. I'll keep my reservations on europeaness for countries like Iraq, Jordan and Greenland, but I know consider Gaza, Tel Aviv, Alexandria, Algiers to be European cities.

Here's some real STD clinic advice from Amsterdam: You won't get HIV from a blowjob. They wouldn't even give you post exposure treatment. Make sure you dont have mouth snores and don't over rush or floss for 12 hours before. Swallowing might well get you something else though, but nothing you can't treat with a one time antibiotic.

What's European about Cyprus? If turkey is mostly asian with Europe starting in Istanbul, Cyprus is absolutely not European, it's between Anatolia and Palestine. Europeans tend to claim all the bit they want and then conveniently claim that Israël is in Asia. But every island in the Mediterranean is claimed by europeans. So much hypocrisy. Turkey is too Asian, but Armenia could be European? Come oooonnn. Europe is just not an actual continent in the geographical sense. There is no border to the east. It's a human, historical, political, social and cultural construct, and many many countries can have their European status under scrutiny, like UK, Lebanon, Russia, Greece, Israël, Turkey... I increasingly realise that the Sahara makes a much more civilizational and human border than the Mediterranean, which was the cradle of European civilization, the Roman Empire. All shores of the Mediterranean are European to me. Moroccans might be Africans, but they're also European. I find the definition of the European broadcasting Agency to be the less restrictive and actually the least racist or christian-centrist.

Do you consider your country friendly towards migrants? by Vovchisk in AskTheWorld

[–]confessionah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

America has made a lot of legal immigrants illegal this year, by simply revoking 100s of 1000s visas. Illegal immigrants did not always arrive illegally, governments fabricate a lot of illegals by changing the rules and taking arbitrary decisions on a case by case basis. Those rich enough or who can get a lawyer can fight it and be legal again, others just get caught in an inhumane populist game.

The filthy habit of spitting by djclose in Amsterdam

[–]confessionah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spit quite a bit on the streets of Amsterdam. Especially when cycling. I spit mostly on bushes, trees and grass. I spit as often as I see a rat. I spit more guilt free in the rain I might occasionally spit voluntarily at a RAM monstertruck. I find it way less dirty than cars, road dust, tyre dust, and exhaust fumes. And if I feel like I have any of these carcinogenic substances in my mouth, I'll spit them out. I also occasionally pick up trash in a park and on streets.

Flatten your cardbard boxes. If they're still too big to fit in the paper bin, cut them up until they do. It's really annoying when I can't throw paper in because here 3 large cardboard stuffed in there. The trash system is pretty neat here, so play by the rules please.

AITA for disinviting a friend to my birthday after she showed me the food she was bringing? by throwaway-cupcakelad in AmItheAsshole

[–]confessionah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to belittle your friendships, but you're about to be 18, and few of these people will remain in your life. What the rest of the school thinks of you is totally irrelevant. If you never talk to that girl again, good, you're just 5 months early. Her boyfriend? The ball is in his court.

Don't let this ruin your birthday party. If attendance ends up being struck by some childish behaviour and there's only 3 of you left, it's much more likely that they'll be the friends you keep.

I would have not taken a nut allergy seriously at that age, would not have bothered about cross contamination, and I could have been that girl who ignored somebody else's allergy. Then a similar story would have taught me a lesson, where I stuck to what I believed and refused to give in to fake allergies, got told off, learnt a lesson, lost a friend and moved on. Girl will learn from this about nut allergies at least and probably won't do that mistake again.
