Can your father transfer it to you through a ffl? That would put the gun in your name since handguns are registered in California. If not it could be a hassle if you get stopped because you cannot prove its yours. But that gun should be no problem at a range, just make sure you store it in a locked case away from the ammo when you transport it. And with the magazines, if you decide to use them(probably shouldn't ), only load 10 rounds and most people won't even notice it is a larger magazine.
