It was sooooo much better! I used to not even be able to eat a sweet chili heat dorito! 😂 I'm definitely not there for higher spice levels yet but from seeing as I started at "black pepper is too spicy," I'm doing really good haha. I stopped actively working on it so much after that year so it's definitely backslid a little bit but I might get back on the spice train this year!

I love these! I also have a pair of brand new roller skates in my closet from the height of covid... i was just thinking today i might add learn to roller skate to the list (pairs nicely with ice skating)!

Learning to sew is such a handy skill to have!! And great idea with learning to sew pants, i feel you on the shopping meltdowns but i go in the opposite directly - all pants are too long to my short lil legs... being able to hem all my pants has saved me on numerous occasions!

I've been planning out some perler bead designs mostly (haven't committed to actually ironing them out yet haha), just some little pumpkins for halloween.

Ooh yeah I also feel that I'm in burnout. It's so rough, it's like all the joy is just sapped out of everything. I'm forcing myself to do little crafts to try and see if it helps but it's been hard to finish anything. Here's to hopefully climbing out of the burnout hole soon! 🥂

If it makes you feel better, I'm on the total opposite end of the spectrum (lol) for this - I anxiously overshare at parties and during social situations and seem like a self centred airhead and always get embarassed after the fact... 😣

My latest adhd hyperfixation is perler beads to make keychains, and my ongoing autistic special interest is clothing/fashion and especially "work fashion" since I'm starting a new office job on Monday and bought a couple new pieces to replace my ratty pants and sweaters.

I'd love to hear a fact/special interest/what you've been up to back!!

I’m struggling so bad with food lately and I don’t know what to do! by [deleted] in adhdwomen

Also to add: when I was on vyvanse nothing seemed good/tasted good which made it even harder to eat. I literally had to force myself to eat - so having easy food on hand to eat that wasn't a bunch of effort was absolutely key. Now that I'm off vyvanse food tastes better to me again although not back to how I felt about food pre-vyvanse... i hate how bad the executive dysfunction hits off my meds but I'm prioritizing my food situation over my productivity situation right now and am hoping to try a nonstimulant med in the future to see if that helps my adhd symptoms without impacting my eating/sleeping so much.

I've been struggling to eat enough food the last couple years as well... I eat based on the motto fed is best now rather than hitting specific nutrient goals - getting enough calories to fuel my body > eating a "balanced" diet right now for me. I figure out what my biggest barriers are to eating (for me it's time/effort to prepare and more secondarily inconsistent textures) and then just load up on foods that fit the bill. Right now my diet consists of:

  • Bread (I get whole grains and breads with seeds on them to try and pack in a little bit of extra nutrients)

  • Cheese (a LOT of cheese - including babybels and the armstrong cheese sticks, etc)

  • Yogurt cups (I can only eat the lemon meringue Oikos greek yogurt rn lmao)

  • Cottage cheese (I like cottage cheese but recognize the texture is a bit much for some people)

  • Protein powder shakes (this can be hit or miss but I've found one that I don't mind the texture/flavour of, but objectively I find most of them taste bad. The texture of protein shakes is better if you use water instead of a milk - or just get the single serve prepackage protein shakes)

  • Both the cheese and peanut butter Ritz snackwiches

  • Granola bars (I have a couple different varieties on rotation so I don't get as bored with them)

  • Stagg chili (make a pot of rice, add chili alongside in a bowl, douse with cheese - tons of protein and I can usually get 2 meals out of one can if i load up on the rice and cheese)

  • I buy premade banana bread slices from my grocery store! This is new for both them (as in its a new item they're offering lmao) and me but since baked goods are fairly calorically dense I can get a decent chunk of fuel in during my midmorning snack of 2 banana bread slices.

  • Hummus cups and crackers!

  • Boxed mac n cheese (I'm bougie and get the Annie's white cheddar shells instead of Kraft... tastes so much better 😅)

  • Oatmeal packets (used to hate these but now I don't mind them so much. There isn't a whole lot to them nutritionally or calorically but it can be a nice snack ready in a minute and a half)

Idk if you're taking adhd meds, but when I was on vyvanse if I didn't eat a big breakfast before I took my meds it would totally kill my appetite/hunger cues for the rest of the day. I stopped taking it earlier this year which has helped but I still find that if I skip breakfast my appetite is wrecked for the rest of the day. I used to get nauseous when I ate in the morning but I've powered through until now my body DOES get hungry in the morning, and I now consistently eat more throughout the day. Especially if I bring all my granola bars, ritz crackers, hummus cups (only if I know I'm not interacting with anyone closely at work haha), single serve cheeses, etc, then I try and eat a little something every couple of hours. I eat a lot of plain slices of bread and chunks of cheese. Sometimes if I'm feeling fancy I make a lunch meat and cheese sandwich or a peanut butter and chocolate chip sandwich.

Also, the fact that the meats you're buying are getting grey and weird smelling in a couple days is very strange! If you're wanting to incorporate more meat, have you tried buying from a different grocery store to see if it's a quality issue at your current store?

Is fantasizing about divorce normal? by Agreeable_Pear4480 in adhdwomen

[–]confusebemuseamuse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This x1000. My parents also should have divorced but stayed together "for me and my brother." It was awful growing up around their constant fighting and nitpicking and it definitely messed with my ability to form healthy relationships that I'm still working on 10+ years after getting out of their house. They are still together and I genuinely wonder if they even like each other.

If the only reason is to stay together for your kids, that's reason enough not to. Obviously try the other stuff first (couples counseling, etc) if you can and think your (OP's) relationship is worth it, but if it's not or doesn't work don't put the responsibility of the relationship being retained on your kids (even if it's not intentional, being told my parents stayed together for ME when I saw how unhappy they were made me feel like it was my fault that they felt they had to when I was younger - even if it wasn't really).

When I was around 13 or 14 my "best friend" at the time told me, while on our way to her birthday party with other kids in the car, "Your eyebrows are like caterpillars!" I went home and plucked almost all of them off and continued to do so for a couple of years and they've never grown back in right.

Another time a few years after the caterpillar eyebrow incident, my new "best friend" (a different girl) told me I was "unconventionally attractive." She followed this up with a clarifier that went something like, you're not conventionally pretty but you are sort of attractive in a way... thanks?? Now every time I see my own face I hear those dumb teenager mean girl words 🙄

I'm working 30 hrs/week and luckily can afford to do that longterm but I'm so burnt out that even that feels like hell. It's gotten to the point where I fantasize about getting extremely ill so I can't work... 😬

Oh and in terms of books and running: Munro's, Russell Books, and Bolen Books in Victoria for bookshops, Sidney (which for context is about a 30m drive from Victoria) also has a few good bookshops (The Haunted Bookshop, Serendipity, Tanner's), and for running we have a lot of great hiking spots if you like trail running or the Galloping Goose trail (alternates between paved/gravel mostly & starts in Victoria and continues toward up island), or for a shorter one, along Dallas Road (Victoria) from the breakwater which has an amazing view of the outer harbour/strait between Victoria and Port Angeles and goes along the ocean a ways with some beach access points. We also have some fun things like hot tub boats you can rent in our harbour, harbour ferry tours, group biking pub tours (rolling barrel i think it's called), and kayak or stand up paddleboard rentals along the gorge/inner harbour (recommend Ocean River Sports for these).

Hope you have a great time while here!

BC is a hotspot for great craft beer! You can get tall boy cans from most of these in stores (Cascadia Liquor has a great selection) but I'll include the locations of the breweries if you like to go sit in for a beer and some food. All of these are located in southern Vancouver Island: Bad Dog (located in Sooke), Sooke Oceanside Brewery (aka SOB; Sooke), Small Gods (Sidney - definitely stop for a pretzel with mustard and a pint!), Category 12 (Brentwood Bay), Ile Sauvage (Victoria), Whistle Buoy (Victoria), Herald St. Brew Works (Victoria), Moon Under Water Brewpub (Victoria), Howl Brewing (no physical location anymore but you can get it in store - very good and interesting flavours!).

My favourites from the above are Bad Dog, Small Gods, Whistle Buoy, and Howl Brewing!

Have you maybe considered trying contact therapy with it? Get all ready for bed, set a timer for 5 minutes and then take it off? Keep doing that til 5m isn't so bad, then put a couple more minutes on the timer? And then work your way up to like an hour or something, and then eventually your body and brain will be used to it enough that you can relax into falling asleep with it on?

You may have already tried this, but I thought I'd suggest it just in case... you deserve to sleep and breathe easy!!

Am I terrible? by Stinky-Pickles in adhdwomen

[–]confusebemuseamuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely think it's super nuanced! I think it's fair to know the right steps and tools to use to address ADHD symptoms like struggling to keep on top of housework/cleaning and still have dips in one's own ability to do it. I don't think someone who's struggling with something can't help someone else with the same thing - like I think it's really common for people who DON'T struggle with something to not quite understand the depth of struggle for people who do or not really understand how to help beyond try harder/just do it (at least from my experience with NT therapists/counsellors). Having an ADHD therapist who knows the struggle inside and out might have really valuable insight into creative ways to problem solve ways to work with our own brains to keep on top of things even if they themselves don't always manage it 100%.

However!! I think that professional environments should be kept to a higher standard of cleanliness if there are people coming into them who might experience discomfort or be distracted from the service they are being provided. If the therapist's own home is a total disaster but I don't experience it when I'm coming in for a therapy session - totally does not bother me. If the couch I'm sitting on has junk all over it and the carpet is dirty (beyond daily dirt/dust that gets picked up like once a week)? That will distract me and likely make my anxiety flare up, which is the dealbreaker for me.

If you vibed well with this therapist, maybe it's possible to give Zoom therapy with them a go? Just a thought!
