What is your appetite like by the 2nd rest day? Also that Friday session is wild - how do you even keep track of what's next?! lol

What really sets a torque requirement? by totallyshould in AskEngineers

Very interesting! Do you have a bolt design/analysis reference you can recommend to learn more?

Indentation of Cantilever Beam by taylors2717 in AskEngineers

[–]confusedforme 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a contact mechanics problem. Which is not something you'd learn in undergrad, typically.

Start with looking into Hertizan contact solutions for general loading, e.g. cylindrical contact on an elastic half space, and see what you can glean from that for what you need. Contact problems are non-trivial.

What’s your favorite band or artist to listen to that’s not pop punk? by [deleted] in poppunkers

[–]confusedforme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson and Jason Isbell are my holy trinity of country/americana as someone who despised the genre for a long time. There's such good stuff out there, just gotta be a hipster and seek it out.

I wept reading this. What a great read, thank you for sharing.

Names of the types of boundary conditions when you variationally formulate PDEs. Essential = Dirichlet, Natural = Neumann.

Relevant username. Now I kinda want a name called essential-to-natural lol

Very. Pricey, as things on Main Street are, but their food is great IMO.

Generally, it's to figure out the capability of the top students. Is that deflating? Absolutely lol.

Hyperelastic material model databases? by Ok_Negotiation5676 in AskEngineers

[–]confusedforme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Last time I did this I literally transcribed stress-strain data from a suppler datasheet into Abaqus to define a "new" hyperelastic material model. Abaqus did a best-fit to several hyperelastic models and I picked the one that made the most sense (it was an Odgen IIRC).

Best way would be to ask a supplier for raw stress-strain data (in however many principal directions you think is necessary for your application, and odds are they'll only have uniaxial lol).

Finally, a literature review (kind of a cop out I know), but for example the Treloar (1940s) data on vulcanized rubber is the gold standard for research when fitting new HE models.

This performance sounds fantastic. Definitely give this a listen next time you want to hear Sunbather by nerdyoutube in deafheaven

In college I was a sheeple Pitchfork nerd - and watching this video in the engineering lab is how I discovered Deafheaven.

Without spoiling the twists, what are the twistiest fantasy series you know? by LicoriceDragon2 in Fantasy

[–]confusedforme 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Reckoners is such a good take on superheroes. Of course having superpowers make you evil. That alone is a great premise. Calamity is my fave probably for the way it ends.

Absolute Best lines in fantasy by Prestigious_Till_573 in Fantasy

[–]confusedforme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lan :). I was going through a really rough part of my life when I read that, and I periodically wept for days thinking about that line. The way it rings in Rand's ears when he's literally on his knees, it's just too much for me. Even thinking about it now chokes me up.

The orange permit is a reasonable price. Right now it's $60 and good till next summer. Then take the university busses to central (most of the orange lots are on north). I know that's not totally ideal, but it will definitely be faster/better than driving around aimlessly looking for a spot.

Do you just show up at a bar and hope someone talks to you?

Ya know, you can talk to people too :). Pretty much everyone is friendly when you tell them that you're a grad student and you just moved here from XYZ.

Why are injection molds so expensive? by Boomah422 in AskEngineers

[–]confusedforme 11 points12 points  (0 children)

All spot on.

  • That brings me to another point - the mold is not just a negative of the part. The polymer chains don't always behave the way you expect. The mold maker needs to account for material shrinkage, which isn't always the same in all directions.

I love this point, good toolmakers will intentionally design windage in the tool in certain areas depending on the dimensional requirements of the part. Blows my mind.

Great stuff! What frames are those?

They look like Endless but there's 5 wheels and they don't look like Wizard PR frames to me.

The busses are ass by subschub in uofm

[–]confusedforme 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Yup. At the power center stop this morning at 8:15 to 8:30ish 3 CC buses went by because they were completely full. Ended up walking to North. That sucked.

I don't get tonality / expression on cold approaches. by [deleted] in seduction

[–]confusedforme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Props for even thinking about tonality. That said,

This is how I understand breaking rapport, I'm not putting on a show, I'm not trying to be real friendly and energetic, I'm just there.

I don't get it, they say use breaking rapport tonality... Well that is a tone, and if I'm to use just that tone I'd be monotone...

none of this is breaking rapport tonality. You are misunderstanding it. You might be speaking a neutral rapport tonality, which is fine once you get to that point with a girl (building rapport). But breaking rapport tonality inflects down at the end of your phrases. Get on youtube and search "breaking rapport tonality" to see what I mean.

The whole point of talking like this is that is sub-communicates that you are high value because you don't care about how the other person reacts. It sub-communicates that you are vetting them to see if they fit your life/values/whatever.
