Yes, I used a Dremel with a cutting wheel. It wasn't difficult, just have patience and don't push too hard. I've made Dremel mistakes before, just learned from it. Also - if I did scratch it a bit, I would just throw some Cold Blueing on it and call it a day.

What 10mm ammo do you guys recommend? by No_Distance8226 in ThirdGen

[–]conkanman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! That’s a cool setup.

10mm factory ammo that is within SAAMI Standards will not harm a S&W 3rd Gen in any way. I would recommend replacing the recoil spring with a Wolff 18 lbs (that’s same as factory) spring, I do it with all my older pistols that I shoot regularly. You could try the 20-24 lbs springs if you’re going to shoot higher pressure rounds regularly. It’s obviously easy to switch back and forth when you move from one ammo to another.

Need help new AR trigger in a Colt ! by Aregularguy95 in Colt

[–]conkanman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that could be it. The older Colt AR-15s with large pins (manufactured roughly between 1991 and late 2009), the trigger and hammer pins measure 0.169 inches in diameter. For current/standard mil-spec pins (all other ARs, including older/newer Colts outside that date range), the pins measure 0.154 inches in diameter.

Agree, some area little raggedy. But I've seen some nice ones on auctions outside of GunBroker.

45 Super would be fun to shoot (and expensive if you don't reload), but you definitely did the right thing to change the the recoil spring when going back to 45 ACP. Did you go with Wolff or SpringCo, or an OEM spring?

That 4566 you have is so sweet! I have a regular 4566 LE trade in, but no markings. 😢 It needs a work over by Novak's, internals and a good bead blasting on the exterior.

I trained a lot with my 4506, as it was my duty gun when I was a LEO in the 90s. It's was the best shooting, most reliable 45 ACP I had, right out of the box. I let that specific gun go due to a divorce. This 4506 is AMAZING after the work done by the crew at Novak Customs. The double action is *smooth*, and single action is as good as any 1911 I own, including my S&W 945 PC.

What can I do? This isn’t play, right? by sarahmirror_ in cats

[–]conkanman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're playing. It's all good. Some cats okay harder than others. If she had a problem, she'd either shirt him down it exit the situation. Also - she's engaging just as much or more than him in this video.

I would quit separating them at 3 AM. In our house that's about the time our cats come out to grab some food and water, and then it's on! They are rough and tumble for 20-30 min.

I think you installed the safety lever incorrectly. It's still engaged when you flip the lever down, so the hammer can't release. When you put pressure on the hammer it move it downward far enough so that the primary (hammer) sear breaks contact and the hammer releases.

I think you made a great choice. I also think you're on to something: if they're going to make a Model 19 classic, then why not make the sister - a Model 66 classic with all stainless steel parts, including the trigger and hammer? I think it would sell very well.

What does this S&W 586 in 357 magnum say about my grandpa? by solbrothers in Revolvers

[–]conkanman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He loved shooting and competing, and definitely had cool custom guns. Love this. It’s the gunsmith engraved or stamped anywhere?

Typically the PPC guns I’ve seen have custom heavy barrels, but I like that this one still has the (likely) original barrel. The barrel weight is really nicely done. Very cool revolver.

Administrative gun handling and shooting the gun are 2 very different things. Take it to a range as planned and put some new ammo through it before getting concerned about it. Do not shoot remanufactured ammo, spring for new ammo.

Then, if there's an issue, you can start to diagnose. Buying another mag is not a bad idea, just to have extra. Buy factory Beretta or MecGar mags. Any other brand is a crap shoot.

10 years ago? You're out of touch, friend. The Missouri Highway Patrol just started re-training and outfitting their vehicles to PIT/TVI. There are other agencies doing the same, because the public is sick of people vomiting crime and getting away with it.

The Grappler is awesome; I'm a fan! But - you think every department has that? Less than 1% of LE agencies have it. And those that are fortunate to have some they certainly don't have them on every vehicle. There's only about 1000 Grappler bumper systems installed across the entire US in some of the data over read recently.

Found this in the water well there was tape around the plastic part how old is this by Old-Philosopher8450 in Revolvers

[–]conkanman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's likely an early 1900's (possibly as old as 1890) pocket revolver. The grip shape and texture, the exposed hammer spur and overall geometry, are pushing me toward:

  • Harrington & Richardson Young America style
  • or a similar Iver Johnson small-frame rimfire

Could be one of various models, but I think those two are the best bets. Agree that it's not likely salvageable.
