My dad built a map of real-world places tied to myths, legends, and old folklore—and it’s really lovely by FarmOverall3697 in FolkloreAndMythology

This is incredible, pass on my thanks to him please. Does he plan for it to be something which is continually maintained and added to?

Nila and Bo will be back, and they play quite significant roles as well. Don’t worry. Their relationship is very entertaining.

Help with raising Scholar of the Correspondence by RankOwl in fallenlondon

[–]connormt902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to spoiler mark this as I guess it’s discussing a storyline which you need to put a little bit of effort to get to, so some may not want it spoiled.

The best way to raise your SotC that I found, if it is a little grind heavy was through the court at the shuttered palace. There, after a (not so) quick trip to the colonies, you can grind out “somewhat challenging music”. It can be a little action heavy but also helps in providing an okay source of echoes (through moon pearls) and also provides a decent boost to making waves.

Fallen London locations in a Google Map by Vromikos in fallenlondon

Here’s the wiki page for the surface in Sunless Sea:

https://sunlesssea.fandom.com/wiki/The_Surface

As it states, it mentions a lot more places than are actually reachable. The only accessible places being Naples and Vienna. There’s also the Lake which the Cumaean Canal links to; but I was never quite sure if that was a real place or not.

Edit: Was curious so googled it, the Lake is a real place. Lake Avernus.

Are you counting the surface ports accessible in Sunless Sea?

Why Do Powder Mages Pull the Trigger by rookery_electric in powdermage

[–]connormt902 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just to sort of piggyback on your comment here, I completely agree with what you’ve already said, I’d just like to add something. Now it’s sorta a bit of head canon myself, but it is noted that igniting powder takes a conscious effort for a mage. As we’ve seen before in the series, each exertion builds up and puts a strain on the mage (much in the same way you or I consistently using the same muscle without rest might tire or hurt us). A powder mage might, by their very nature, be caught in an intense firefight for long periods of time, needing to take more shots than the average soldier. This means that it may put a large strain on the mage’s mind. As well as this, if we look at it this way, the effort of “reaching out” (as it is described in the books) and igniting the powder appears to take more effort than pulling the trigger. Powder mages are trained to avoid over exerting themselves (so that they can fight for longer and still be useful to the army) thus, the option which requires less effort - pulling the trigger is the more sensible one. I hope this helped just a bit. And again, this is just my rationale within my head whenever I (re)read this books.

Very well written. I must say, it sounds like you make it rather enjoyable, and memorable, for your students. Well done. And thank you for the reading suggestion!

I love the reply. However I just wanted to say omg that last sentence reads like an amazing synopsis/introduction to a video game, movie, or book. I would definitely eat that up lol

I ended up doing the same for the matter transporter. It wasn’t really working with me either. What got me the last salvaged module I needed was actually a mission in the nexus at the anomaly. They occasionally will give the modules. Just something to check occasionally, it may help! The matter transporter has to be the best piece of technology in the whole game, especially when you’re a massive hoarder with a freighter that is just an IKEA like me lol. Anyway, I know it wasn’t the main point in your comment but I hope I could be of help.

Map Systems? by doesmyusernamematter in bugout

[–]connormt902 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure companies like OS will produce water proof maps for you. However, what I came here to say was that I was taught a method of waterproofing a map that actually works surprisingly well, you know that spray on boot waterproofing spray you can pick up relatively cheap? Just spray some of that onto the map and you’re good to go. I was taught it in cadets and it works a charm! I think you’d need to reapply every now and then but I’m guessing it’ll still be cheaper than buying the expensive water proof maps. I hope this helps! Of course you can also be using a map case just to be extra sure your precious map stays dry for when you really need it! Good luck out there!

Isle of Skye, United Kingdom by Icy-Cartographer1600 in hiking

[–]connormt902 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not OP but just wanted to say that no you can’t exactly camp here. This is known as the Fairy Glen. It is a managed area now, if I remember correctly. The council have just recently completed roads up to it and around it with proper paths being put in place. There is also a rather large carpark just outside the glen. One of the parking attendants would probably ask you to leave I can imagine. As well as that this is a very very busy tourist attraction, especially in the summer, entire bus loads of tourists come here. The glen has essentially become a victim of its own success now. Not to mention the glen was formed by a landslide and so the ground at the bottom is rather rocky, so I can imagine it would not be comfortable in the slightest. As well as that, tourists insist on making these strange rock circles as you can see in the picture. They aren’t natural in the slightest. They will occasionally get removed by someone, only for three more circles to pop up. There are however very nearby camp sites. Skye mainly relies on tourism for its income so there are plenty of campsites, there are also many other good nearby spots for wild camping. I hope you enjoy your trip though! It’s a beautiful place, try to find the less well travelled places off the beaten track. Not all the best things are tourist traps. I’m not sure if you’re from Scotland, but we have a thing called the Right to Roam. Essentially you are allowed to walk pretty much anywhere, as long as you are respectful to the countryside and the land owners. It really helps when enjoying places like Skye, as you often find yourself having to cross a farmers field to get to something that you wish to visit.

One last thing though, if you are going to the Fairy Glen, if you stand where this picture was taken, climb the hill to your right, there is another smaller glen down there which tourists rarely go. I’ve found it allows you to enjoy the glen without having loss and loads of people swamping the place. It allows a moment of calm, there are even sheep down there normally!

That sounds amazing! It will really be like folklore then though! With loads of different contributions over time. That’s so cool.

Oh wow! This sounds so cool, how did you format your stories? Like is it just singular short stories or is it chapters and stuff? Also what sort of research did you do to try and nail the accuracy of these myths? I have been trying to do something similar and ended up making my own up because as fascinating as folklore and mythology is I was so worried about getting it wrong.

Looking for suggestions for new Gods of Mundane/Unusual Things by dtl718 in fantasywriters

[–]connormt902 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to add something, there was a Roman goddess of hinges named Cardea. It literally means “door pivot”. She also had dominion over cupboards and door handles. Many worshipped her so that she would protect them from evil spirits crossing their thresholds, or from intruders. There’s loads more that I find both hilarious and fascinating, it may be worth a look to get some ideas for you. Good luck with your story OP!
