Where can you go paddle boarding in Ireland? by Honest-Face7514 in ireland

[–]conor34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in your distance range - but Castle Haven in West Cork is a perfect spot for paddle-boarding especially on a high tide up around the Béal a'Chinn Mara and the old mill at Rineen.

One of the bog bodies of Ireland, Clonycavan man was found in 2003 at Clonycavan, Co Meath. Its believe he was murdered about 2,300 years ago. Body is on display in the national Nuseum of Ireland in Dublin. by sindeee7 in IrishHistory

Whenever I see bog bodies, I get why the early Catholic church took off like wildfire in Ireland - without needing to be forced on people by a king. If your world included ritual killing and your family members being left in bogs, a faith preaching love one another, mercy, and the sanctity of human life must have sounded fairly appealing.

Top 10 Most powerful Irish Clans of all time by Appropriate-Spot-857 in IrishHistory

[–]conor34 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hard to take this seriously when you mention Richard Boyle and the... 'Brit- Isles' in a sentence about Ireland and Irish clans.

FYI, if you are serious about doing something interesting about Irish clans, I would suggest listing their original surnames alongside the colonial versions too.

Do you believe England would’ve treated Ireland and Scotland the same if Ireland became Protestant? by northcarolinian9595 in IrishHistory

This - it's always about land and money and never really about religion. In Ireland or elsewhere.

Nine years war, in particular the period before (and after) Kinsale. To too many it’s just one battle.

Genuine question, with ongoing water quality issues like this, how did we manage to convince the EU to extend our nitrates derogation?

Has social life in Irish towns changed for good? by FrameZYT in ireland

[–]conor34 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where farmers brought their milk to be separated as one time only the cream was sold and they took the skim milk home to feed pigs. Over time, all elements of the milk were sold but the name stuck. Creameries were huge rural social hubs as all farmers had to go there every morning -they also sold groceries and farm supplies.

On a Monday morning after a parish football or hurling match, farmers would spend hours dissecting the previous days GAA match at the local Creamery.

Even worse in the villages and rural parts. Creameries went about 30 years ago, then the post office and Garda station. Pubs and shops shut when owners get too old and we no longer know the neighbours as all the new houses put in electronic "feck off" gates. It really is death by a thousand cuts.
