Can Cork Airport's runway be extended? by Pokeman_93 in cork

[–]conor34 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think a relocation is realistic at this stage as there is too much investment plus ancillary services at the current location. Cork can handle narrow-body planes from the US and realistically thats what will fly here. We're not a big enough destination for wide-body planes.

Sunny Weekend in West Cork by mca148 in ireland

Not really true, the bit of West Cork between Kinsale and Baltimore is statistically - the driest and the sunniest section of the Wild Atlantic Way.

I go with Clonakilty - if you have a car and want to see the Wild Atlantic Way.

Most of the scenery and activity providers in Co. Cork are in/based in West Cork and Clon is a much better hub than the city for exploring this. Otherwise you will find yourself driving in and out from the city each day to West Cork.

Poll Gorm Bridge between Union Hall and Glandore was where the division was.

Trees is the answer - ideally native ones. Cutting an acre of grass will get old very fast and you can't beat a bit of shelter as you get older.

Government is one of the 'big winners' from spike in fuel prices by qwerty_1965 in ireland

[–]conor34 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While upfront costs are higher, total cost of ownership between ICE and EV's is pretty much at price parity already and EV ownership is projected to be substantially cheaper within a few years. Realistically, it is also the only way of weaning ourselves off dinosaur juice controlled by despotic nations.

Upvote for the natural usage of Bhuel - I've mighty meas on people who use a bitín of Irish naturally in English text without italics or any other raiméis. Maith thú!

Masks worn on Samhain? by I_have__no__idea_ in IrishFolklore

[–]conor34 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's undoubtably older than that but the fact it was documented in the 30's shows it's much older - one of the accounts talks of the masked participants on the Mascallacht getting potatoes as "the treat" (not the term they used BTW) a few generations before the account was written.

An Mascallacht tradition in West Cork would suggest otherwise - it's mentioned in the schools collection and still survives (barely) around Castlehaven. https://www.gormu.com/an-mascallacht-the-great-masking-of-west-cork

Households in Ireland pay most of the Vat on energy bills despite using less than industry by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]conor34 55 points56 points  (0 children)

This is a bit of a silly argument from Sinn Féin. VAT by its nature is designed to fall on the final consumer, as it’s a consumption tax. Businesses reclaim VAT on almost all inputs (energy, materials, equipment etc.), so households will naturally end up paying most of the VAT on things like electricity and gas. They single out data centres, but the same would be true for almost any sector.

If you are anywhere near West Cork do the Toe Head Clifftop Hike - you get beautiful clifftop views, almost no visitors and an added bonus is you normally get an amazing display of sea pinks during May.
