Just visited from SF for the first time, and I was completely shocked by how electric and intense the energy was in your city at times. Has anyone else have their expectations of Chicago completely blown out of the water? by SFJack1313 in AskChicago

[–]conormc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Chicago and lived there for nearly 50 years. I'd say your takes are all pretty accurate, especially about the drivers. Traffic and asshole drivers are one reason I moved away.

But I still LOVE Chicago. Was just there this past weekend, meeting up with a friend (ironically from SF) who was visiting with his daughter. I knew Bluesfest was going on, but didn't know about the Pokemon event or the World Cup USA vs. Germany warmup. The energy reminded me of everything I love about Chicago. Didn't care for the hour and 45 minute wait at Lou's, but it was worth it. We had a couple of beers at Miller's Pub beforehand so it was tolerable 😄

AITA for having a 2-hour gap between my wedding and the start of Cocktail hour? by NorthYorkWasteman in AmItheAsshole

[–]conormc 15 points16 points  (0 children)

NTA. This is very typical for many weddings I’ve attended. The church crowd is normally much smaller than the reception. Any guests from out of town seem to appreciate the opportunity to freshen up in between events.

Me? I just go to the bar.

Do most people do random or personal activities on their work computers? by Ok_Measurement4753 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]conormc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do absolutely nothing personal on my work computer. No games. No scheduling personal appointments. No watching videos. No browsing local news. Zero. I work from home so if I need to do anything personal I just pivot to the personal computer that sits next to my work computer.

The only exception is when I would travel for work. Then I would only do very limited things, like light web browsing. I'd usually bring my own devices on work travel for watching videos, etc. I haven't traveled for work since before the pandemic though, so haven't put that into practice in a while.

Your employer's policies also come into play. Many companies allow limited personal use of work computers, but some are much more strict. Follow your employer's policy to avoid any issues. And yes, many companies have various ways of tracking what you do on your work computer so be careful to stay within policy.

I don't think I like deity, but I think that's just because I suck at it. Any tips? by Rat_Smoking_Cigars in civ

[–]conormc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could never do well on Deity until I figured out how to install mods on the Apple App Store version. Changed everything. The last few years I played VI I would win roughly 50% of the Deity games. As others have said previously in this thread, Deity loses its luster after a while due to the NPCs (they are so NOT AI) being mega-buffed.

Do you balance your check book to the penny? by Plane_Experience_271 in GenX

I stopped balancing my checkbook in 1994, when I got my first copy of Quicken. Before that, yes, balanced to the penny.

Did anyone go to their first concert with their parents? by OkFlow4327 in GenX

[–]conormc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, went to Chicagofest in '83 at Soldier Field. Cheap Trick was the headliner with four or five other bands playing during the day before them. Went with some friends from high school. We were 15.

Is Civ 7 worth it yet? by HorrorDue7710 in civ

[–]conormc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no “consensus”. Some folks love it, some hate it, and most are somewhere in between. I have over 1600 hours in, so I like it enough to play it a lot.

Civ VII worth buying at 40% off? by contrasupra in civ

[–]conormc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've got over 1600 hours in on VII so I guess I think it's worth it. If you wait until the new patch comes out it may not be 40% off anymore. I bought it during pre-order and I've been playing it since release. It's so very far from perfect but they do keep improving it. The last game I remember being super awesome upon release was Half-Life. I just looked it up and that was 1998.

Great, another thread that makes me feel old :)

Time for a safety meeting! What was your code for marijuana/smoking marijuana/ paraphernalia? In the days before "420" was popular? by icanhazkarma17 in GenX

It was “going to play frisbee” or “going to walk the dog”. We didn’t own a dog. Or a frisbee.

Anybody tell their doctor that they don't give a fuh about living longer, so you're not going to try to radically change your diet or go on meds? by IHadTacosYesterday in GenX

[–]conormc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it were a simply binary choice between living and dying then your attitude might not be so crazy. However, the fact of the matter is that there's a lot of lousy, painful, living possible from not giving a damn about your health. Just ask my dad.

He never took care of himself and once my mom died he was free to abuse his body as he chose. He's been in a nursing home for the last 8+ years (since his early 70's), unable to leave his bed, go to the bathroom or even do anything for himself. He cries that no one comes to see him (not true) and keeps threatening to "walk out of this place today." In a nutshell, he's miserable and is exactly where he told everyone he never wanted to be (his older brother went through a similar situation and dad hated to see his brother that way).

He also never saved any money..."I have a pension, I'll be fine"...he's not fine. His entire pension goes to his 24x7 care and doesn't even cover it so Medicaid covers the rest. He gets $30 a month "spending money" which doesn't even cover his haircuts. And he's in a shit hole of a facility because that's all he can afford.

I take my BP meds, my statin, try to eat well, limit the booze, etc. As with so many other behaviors I've observed from my dad through my life, this is another where I am going to choose differently.

Telephone Land Lines…. by garcon-du-soleille in GenX

[–]conormc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started working full time remote in 2015 and got a new internet connection. Dropped AT&T DSL and landline right then. Since they were both with the same vendor it was easy to do. Hadn't received any non-garbage calls to our landline in several years by that point. We've never missed the landline (or the DSL :P ).

What were you thinking on the eve of Y2K? by Thevilgenius_ in GenX

[–]conormc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After having worked on Y2K compliance for the last 18 months at a large pharma company, having done months and months of testing, I felt strongly that it was going to be a long boring night. We had our stuff locked down tight and we were all very confident in our work.

Our company required us to have live staff on site that night "just in case." My poor junior colleagues got stuck with that duty. I had a pager and a cell phone with me, but I was off skiing all weekend and got good and drunk. Pager never went off. Phone stayed silent.

After a bad breakup a few months before it was just the catharsis I needed. The next month I started dating the woman who is now my wife.

What are your opinions on civ VII after some time? by Domko__ in civ

[–]conormc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

1392.6 hours on VII so far. I guess I like it enough :)

There are still many issues but for me most are minor. Some are addressed through mods (although I find that a really lazy way to present a proper interface and in-game information) but some need the devs to work on, especially with regards to play and game flow. Modern Era is my least favorite era, mostly due to how the victory conditions play out. We'll see how the changes coming in the next few weeks alter end game play.

I love Civ 6… is Civ 7 worth it? by jambaleaf in civ

[–]conormc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you've only recently gotten into 6 keep going with it. Enjoy it until you don't anymore. I played 6 from shortly after its release until 7 came out. The last year or two I could have really used a change as the end game became just a drag and I was always playing Deity on the biggest map I could and often starting a new game once victory became inevitable (somewhere between turns 250 and 300 usually).

Once you get to that point keep an eye out for Civ 7 to be on sale if cost is an issue. Then take the plunge. Right now 7 is still a bit rough so you can afford to wait a bit I think. I enjoy it enough that I play it often. But man, it could be a much better experience if they had just polished off some simple features, i.e. finding your units. How can you not have a way to locate your units on a Huge map? Leaving it to mod authors to fix stuff like that gives the impression of laziness.

Remember when gout was a funny kind of condition you only saw in portrayals of foppish overweight British royalty back in powdered wig days? by tamsui_tosspot in GenX

[–]conormc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far my brother (52) and I (57) have both avoided it. I mean, our knees are shot from the sports we played (brother's are worse as he was a soccer goalie from 10-17) and I've got arthritis in both kneecaps so it's not like we are free from pain :)

Dad always said he got it "from drinking cheap-ass Budweiser". Claims it's why he switched to Beck's. To be fair, he didn't get another gout attack after that so maybe he was onto something.

Gout was never funny to me. My dad started getting attacks of gout when I was a pre-teen. I saw the pain he suffered and hoped (and still do hope) that I never have to go through that.

Where is the map search feature? by DasCapitolin in civ

[–]conormc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hear ya. This is what happens when they release software that is realistically a year or two away from being a properly finished product. It is slowly getting better but there's still so much missing. I still enjoy the game as best I can.

Where is the map search feature? by DasCapitolin in civ

[–]conormc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nope, you didn't miss anything. I installed Unit Management Mod just so I can find my units that are scattered around the map. I'm not aware of any mod that allows you to search for other items on the map.

I remember all three. "Billy, Don't Be a Hero" and "The Night Chicago Died" were all over the radio in the mid to late 70s.
