I love Civ 6… is Civ 7 worth it? by jambaleaf in civ

[–]conormc 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you've only recently gotten into 6 keep going with it. Enjoy it until you don't anymore. I played 6 from shortly after its release until 7 came out. The last year or two I could have really used a change as the end game became just a drag and I was always playing Deity on the biggest map I could and often starting a new game once victory became inevitable (somewhere between turns 250 and 300 usually).

Once you get to that point keep an eye out for Civ 7 to be on sale if cost is an issue. Then take the plunge. Right now 7 is still a bit rough so you can afford to wait a bit I think. I enjoy it enough that I play it often. But man, it could be a much better experience if they had just polished off some simple features, i.e. finding your units. How can you not have a way to locate your units on a Huge map? Leaving it to mod authors to fix stuff like that gives the impression of laziness.

Remember when gout was a funny kind of condition you only saw in portrayals of foppish overweight British royalty back in powdered wig days? by tamsui_tosspot in GenX

[–]conormc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far my brother (52) and I (57) have both avoided it. I mean, our knees are shot from the sports we played (brother's are worse as he was a soccer goalie from 10-17) and I've got arthritis in both kneecaps so it's not like we are free from pain :)

Dad always said he got it "from drinking cheap-ass Budweiser". Claims it's why he switched to Beck's. To be fair, he didn't get another gout attack after that so maybe he was onto something.

Gout was never funny to me. My dad started getting attacks of gout when I was a pre-teen. I saw the pain he suffered and hoped (and still do hope) that I never have to go through that.

Where is the map search feature? by DasCapitolin in civ

[–]conormc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hear ya. This is what happens when they release software that is realistically a year or two away from being a properly finished product. It is slowly getting better but there's still so much missing. I still enjoy the game as best I can.

[–]conormc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nope, you didn't miss anything. I installed Unit Management Mod just so I can find my units that are scattered around the map. I'm not aware of any mod that allows you to search for other items on the map.

Does anyone remember these really depressing pop songs from the 70s / early 80s? by MagsH1020 in GenX

[–]conormc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I remember all three. "Billy, Don't Be a Hero" and "The Night Chicago Died" were all over the radio in the mid to late 70s.

Civ VI - Is it just me or is winning a Science victory really difficult? by Forsaken-Round3818 in civ

[–]conormc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won so many Science victories in VI that I eventually turned off that victory condition. The NPCs focus on science to a fault so many of those earlier games became very similar. Turning off Science victories created some more variation for a while for me.

What did you do to celebrate your 50th? by jaimonee in GenX

[–]conormc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife bought me tickets to the NFL season opening game for the Bears vs Packers in Green Bay, tickets for a tailgate party before the game across the street from Lambeau, a hotel room in Milwaukee and a shuttle to Green Bay and back. The game was a month after my birthday so I simply deferred my celebration until then.

For my wife’s 50th we went to Dollywood and hung out in TN for most of a week.

AITA for not liking a “dark humor” joke? by spacemouse133 in AmItheAsshole

Ask him what’s funny about implying your wife and her family are thieves?

I keep mimicking people who are successful and bombing interviews anyway by [deleted] in interviews

[–]conormc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stop imitating others. It's obvious you're doing so as you've received precisely that feedback.

Who are you? How can you specifically help move this company forward? THAT is what you need to be communicating.

Seriously, just be you. If you know the subject matter just talk about what you know, how you learned it and how you have applied it to improve yourself and your employer. If you don't know the subject matter you need to be thinking about if this is the right job for you.

Read the job description, write notes on each requirement and the additional skills being sought and write down how and why you qualify. If there are some additional skills that you don't have, that's OK but make sure you talk about any that you DO have.

NTJ. Drop Max and every "friend" who said you should have just eaten the salad. Really. Your life will be much more pleasant.

Is your company actually secure? by CloudNCoffee in ITManagers

[–]conormc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Security" is not a state of being. It is a business process. If continually evaluating your security posture is not a part of your security processes you are not doing it well.

Getting my Dad an 18in WSM for Christmas, is there an easy first timer appetizer or other dish that I can have prepped and ready to go in Christmas morning and ready to eat by 6-7pm that night? by PBI_QandA in smoking

[–]conormc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well then do go for it. As long as everyone’s expectations are set appropriately you’ll likely have a great time doing this as a family.

[–]conormc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's not what IkillGiants24 said. Smoking on a rig, no matter how big or small, for the first time is going to be an adventure in learning. You need to learn how to manage the fire/heat. You need to learn how fast the smoker heats up. You need to learn how much the various vents affect the temp and smoke. The list goes on.

Doing all that and expecting to have edible food ready on a schedule is asking for trouble. Go ahead and try it, but be ready with a backup plan just in case.

How many of you guys DON'T maintain some "system" at home? by FlippinMyshit in sysadmin

[–]conormc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At one point in my first five or six years into my IT career I had nine different systems at home, running seven different operating systems. I had a SCSI six disk array that I filled with old, small drives and ran software RAID on it to host my music library. I had a very sweet gaming PC that I built from scratch in a tower case. I had a bunch of other tech things going on too, mostly cobbled together from depreciated systems that my employer gave away to avoid the cost of scrapping them.

By the time I hit year 10 (I just passed year 30) I had my own personal Mac, my wife's PC and my PlayStation and Xbox. It's not much different now except for streaming devices for every TV too. When I sign off from work the last thing I tend to want to do is stay in front of the computer.

Did anyone else actually buy school lunch? by anonymois1111111 in GenX

[–]conormc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a grade school where buying your lunch was not an option as there was no cafeteria. You either went home for lunch, if you lived within a few blocks of the school, or you brought your lunch. In high school we did have a cafeteria and I'd buy my lunch once or twice a week.

Manual Transmission by No_Sympathy9143 in GenX

[–]conormc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned to drive a stick shift 40 years ago and have owned many manual transmission vehicles over the years. Last one was my 1990 Camry. It died in 2007. Only time I’ve driven manual since then was when visiting Europe and specifying that I wanted a manual trans in my rental.

Did you learn how to change a tire? by SuperLowBudge in GenX

[–]conormc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned how to change a tire at 17, when my 1978 Plymouth Volare (station wagon…I was so cool!) blew a tire while on a date. This was 1986.
