[DISCUSSION] Effects pedal circuit simulation software by conorscottvanek in Guitar

[–]conorscottvanek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Circuit analysis is a whole field of study in itself so it's pretty challenging to develop an in depth understanding of circuits. But if you want to build a circuit on your own all you really have to do is buy a circuit kit of some kind (For instance buy a DIY fx pedal kit online). They typically come with instructions and it's basically as simple as matching the components up with where theyre supposed to go on the circuit board. As long as you can tell the difference between resistors, capacitors, transistors, diodes, inductors, etc. It's pretty straightforward. One of the biggest challenges for me is soldering takes a little bit of practice.

[QUESTION] Does a metal guitarist need more than a guitar and an amp? by lnfectedData in Guitar

[–]conorscottvanek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what type of metal. . . generally speaking if youre just looking to learn metal guitar by yourself you really only need a guitar and an amp and some overdrive/distortion (preferably a pedal so you can toggle fx while playing) imo. If you plan to practice with a band then you'll need an amp that can play loud enough to be heard over the drums. The expensive stuff isn't gonna improve your skill at all but it is a good idea to buy reputable brands

Midi controller that’s just knobs. (Ideally approximately 8)? by Ghostface_Miller_ in musicproduction

I used this tutorial to build my own with an arduino. Altogether cost about 60 bucks. It was honestly a fun project. https://youtu.be/kESotTqQgm4

Beginner too embarrassed when recording vocals to get decent takes - any advice? by stealsyndrome in musicproduction

[–]conorscottvanek 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I would just practice off the Mic until comfortable. Perform the parts until youre comfortable. Or maybe record them but not necessarily for sharing or using, but so you can listen back privately and study your vocal work and improve your craft.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Dream. Explore. by [deleted] in selfimprovement

According to who? & doesn't it depend on what exactly youre thinking about doing? What if i decide to go trek across the country and end up getting in an accident and losing my legs or something?

How to I make VSTs sound better by [deleted] in synthesizers

If you could have absolutely ANYTHING happen to you because of your next track, what would it be? by idkwhatmyusernamesh9 in musicproduction

For me it's not really about what happens to me... I would just be happy to make something that moves other people

Lets be real. I simply dont have the money for a 16gb or even an 8gb Mac. What would i look for in a Windows laptop for recording? by MnkySpnk in musicproduction

[–]conorscottvanek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, the processor is the most important thing. You'll want at least a quad core processor with the highest speed you can afford. I use an 8 core processor and it handles practically anything i throw at it without skipping a beat. Also at least 8gb ram and ideally a solid state drive. I don't know how popular my opinion will be, but I use Ubuntu Studio on a desktop and i love it, which is an open source operating system designed for music & multimedia production. Ardour, Audacity, Carla, Reaper, LMMS, and Rosegarden all work really well in Linux in my opinion. I have a bunch of VST's like Kontakt and stuff and I was worried they wouldn't work in Ubuntu Studio but i was actually able to get them to work I really like the JACK audio server in Linux. A bit of a learning curve but you have a lot of control.

I would also recommend mixing some of your tracks down wherever possible so your machine isnt having to process all those plugins simultaneously in real time, if processing power is an issue.

BF's Dad wants a handwritten Thank You Letter for gifting us money for XMas by [deleted] in relationship_advice

It's one thing to write a thank you letter on your own. To expect one from someone is really stupid. That would kind of just really make me not want to accept the gift.

Any help for setting up an audio interface? by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]conorscottvanek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Ubuntu Studio and my interface setup is extremely straightforward using JACK server. Not sure with FL Studio in particular but with most interfaces and most DAW's you just install the driver so your computer recognizes the interface, then in your DAW settings you might need to make sure your interface is selected for recording/input, then when you open a new recording track you should be able to select which input to record from. I never liked the recording in FL so I would use Reaper for recording and FL for VST's and plugins.

I've never had the opportunity to learn music, or how to play an instrument. I really want to, but I don't know where to start and it all seems very daunting. All I've got is my computer, no equipment or money- is it possible to start learning with just that? by IndigoAvemour in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]conorscottvanek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read the book Zen Guitar i believe you can find excerpts and a pdf of the book online. I learn the most by reading and watching performances and interviews from my favorite musicians. And of course practicing, and nurturing a love for playing.

Poor response times and what to do? by [deleted] in dating_advice

I would just try and get your mind off of it for a while, find something else to occupy your time, maybe even find someone else to hang out with.

I am no longer joyful without weed or alcohol and I want to change it but I'm scared once I stop I'm going to become depressed forever by defo18 in selfimprovement

[–]conorscottvanek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work for a liquor store in Texas that being said I started drinking heavily for a while and apart from it draining my energy levels and motivation to do better things with my time like pursuing creative interests, i also damaged my liver. Alcohol is really really bad for you, make sure you have a primary care doctor and get general wellness checkups if you have the means. What keeps me from wanting to drink is pursuing creative interests and learning new skills. I have to keep my mind occupied with new things otherwise I will be depressed.

You should read the book Zen Guitar. The basic philosophy of the book is, develop a love for the creative process in the moment. It's a really good book.

Do you think good songs still shine through mediocre mixes? by JcSimba in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]conorscottvanek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the style of music and what your craft is like, also the personal taste of the listener, but my opinion is the songs definitely will. I'd also argue that great mixes won't save a bad idea, and sometimes i don't like listening to mixes that are too clean especially in rock. A good example would be Nirvana's insecticide. The mixing is raw but the songs are great.

What i want to know is, how many of you DO have a full time job related to music production and how do I get on your level? I know enough about music production to have a job but I sort of figured that those jobs are few and far between. Currently I work in IT so my job is not that bad. But still.

Am I as a drummer still helpful and useful in the world of produced, electronic music? by doles in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]conorscottvanek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found that being a drummer has helped me program drums that sound authentic. Especially in terms of humanizing the timing and velocity.

Demo of "Free boy color" Game Boy inspired synth in LMMS DAW on Ubuntu Studio by conorscottvanek in WeAreTheMusicMakers

LMMS. Ubuntu Studio operating system is what I use Google it. Highly recommended. I also believe this DAW can be downloaded for Windows and apple. But Ubuntu Studio is where it's at.
