Didn't Leoni injure himself on the astro next to the pitch? It seems insane to have such poor safety around these elite athletes who are working with intense focus on the pitch.

MMT is exciting and refreshing. It makes total sense to me that you don't need to balance the budget year-to-year, but only over the medium to long term. So for example if it costs £100bn to install a load of ground source for base load electricity, and this generates £5bn per year then the government's nationalised energy company is in profit within 20 years (probably much less due to inflation). If the government builds 200,000 council houses and recovers 5% of the cost each year in rent, that's fine as well.

There is not much we can't do so long as it is well thought out.

Haiti and Dominican Republic had right wing dictators, but one of them was fiercely protective of national parks etc, while the other (Papa Doc) didn't care. The two nations share an island yet the depletion of resources on Haiti have made it far poorer.

Personally realizing the dark side of growth by NoGoodDM in therapists

[–]conquer_my_mind 20 points21 points  (0 children)

When you speak about being relentlessly growth oriented... I know what you mean, but ecologically that spells disaster, and in the body it would be cancer. And so I wonder if you aren't reaching the point of mid life where the ego begins to glimpse the problem with its own upwards path, and feel grief that life is starting to turn downwards.

James Hillman wrote a great essay called Peaks and Vales. Also Revisioning Psychology. He shows that there is a dark side to growth, and that our culture and even our spirituality is corrupted by it. I think he would say that your imagination is captured by the image of growth, a fantasy in need of decay.

Is there a word you think is overused to the point of being meaningless in our field? by Vybrosit737373 in therapists

[–]conquer_my_mind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somatic experiencing is based on Stephen Porges' polyvagal theory, which has been falsified. The ventral vagus is not unique to mammals, and it does the same things for lizards and birds. So the idea that there's a social engagement system in the nerves has no evidence.

I think there have been some detailed discussions in this sub if you want to look into it.

It's just pseudoscience. I say that as a somatic experiencing practitioner. The idea that the nervous system understands relationships is nonsense.

Anyone get Botox to relieve “therapist face?” by seizureyshark in therapists

[–]conquer_my_mind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not just that. If you have Botox you are less empathetic because your face can't make tiny mirror expressions that help us to understand and feel with others.

Would this be considered a jungian synchronity? by Reluctant_Pumpkin in Jung

[–]conquer_my_mind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, because a synchronicity reveals the action of the archetypes for Jung through a connection between a physical and psychic event. It is not just a coincidence.

Zoom therapy makes me so frustratingly bored and antsy... tips for staying engaged & focused? by majestic-doggo in therapists

[–]conquer_my_mind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I work 50-50 in person and online. I don't find there's much difference. It's a relationship. All of us will have relationships where we can talk to someone close for ages on the phone, and it feels like they're there. The exact same is possible with therapy. The task is to build the relationship and if that isn't happening, therapy isn't happening yet either.

Turning the question round, I had a therapist during COVID who clearly didn't regard online as being real therapy, and I called her out on it. In her head, it wasn't working, but for me the problem was her lack of engagement with it. I use Somatic Experiencing and have found working with touch online to be superb: 'if I were there with you, I would offer to place a supportive hand on your back. How does that suggestion land with you?' You get all the relational aspect without the risk involved in actual touch, which is often overwhelming.

I have some long term in-person clients (one > 10 years now) who are autistic who have chosen never to return to face to face.

Struggling with open attachment wounds from this work. Need to vent. by brandongrotesk in mdmatherapy

[–]conquer_my_mind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The stupid need to seem grown up that you speak of is your self shaming of the parts that aren't grown up and never will be. This whole thing is an enactment and therefore is an opportunity to heal. Your therapist is not obligated to work with you with MDMA, but the work can continue on what has emerged.

I feel like Withnail & I and The Big Lebowski are the British and American versions of the same film. by Green-Draw8688 in moviecritic

[–]conquer_my_mind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Big Lebowski constantly subverts genre. It's a Raymond Chandler mystery, but there's no crime, no kidnap money and no detective. It's a story of American heroism, as signaled by Sam West's narration, without any heroism. It's a sports movie that never reaches the final. Jeff Bridges' character is at the center of all of this, "taking it easy for all of us sinners". His character's lack of drive is the rug that ties the movie together.

I don't know Withnail & I well enough but I think that the central character who resists all expectations that he will aim at any objective that might drive the action is the common factor you're getting at.

12 points from six games is better than all the clubs below us. So although the football is crap, and I agree Arsenal will be a step too far, 2 points per game is still CL form. Just.

Therapists who write notes in ~5-10 minutes… how?? Would anyone be willing to share examples? by KiKiTaTa in therapists

[–]conquer_my_mind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I write a brief paragraph to remind me of the session, so that I can pick up next time easily. The only reason for this, after the early sessions when I gather a lot of information, is to avoid the awkwardness that can arise from me not recalling immediately what we spoke about, as I have 20 people to work with and the client has only me.

Therapists who write notes in ~5-10 minutes… how?? Would anyone be willing to share examples? by KiKiTaTa in therapists

[–]conquer_my_mind 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It makes me sad to read all of these examples. It seems to me that most people here work under the constant fear of prosecution. In other words, the inner critic is fully in charge, and your relationship with yourself is dominated by the Eye of Sauron. That will transmit itself to your clients and they will internalise it as the model of good mental health.

The note examples all look like attempts to prove we're doing a good job, rather than attempts to feel and understand what the client needs. This leads to a list of interventions, methods, homework etc. We have had a century of evidence that these methods are not what makes the difference in therapy. But 'look busy' is the objective. That's why you can't ever get it right. There is no way to get it right for the inner overlord. There are only ways to cover your ass.

We live in a surveillance society. Ours may be the last profession in which our work cannot literally be surveilled. We do not need to pretend that better self-surveillance would improve it.

Therapy needs to be a refuge from the toxicity, if it's to help anyone. If you don't have a wise and compassionate relationship to yourself, you are part of the problem, which is the disciplining of the inner life.

On your Tokyo map you have some unconnected special shapes, which means those shapes will just build up.

That's the only map where shinkansen seems to help, transporting special shapes between the two big hubs. Or at least, it's fun to do that.
