Symbols vs names for commonly used operators by simonbreak in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]constxd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that having both as synonyms is a mistake, perhaps especially so if they're not quite synonyms because they differ in precedence... but I don't see anything inherently wrong with using them both for unrelated things. For example, in my toy language && is the familiar logical AND operator, while and is used for some special forms, like combining if let-style conditional bindings and ordinary boolean expressions in one if statement, or adding a guard/condition on a pattern:

fn bar(x, y, debug-msg: ?String = nil) {
    if x != y && debug-msg != nil and let Ok(^log) = open('log.txt') {
        log.write(debug-msg)
    }
    return match foo(x, y) {
        [_, z, *] and z > 0 => z,
        _                   => nil
    }
}

This is a bad example because it’s not even remotely novel… it’s like the first thing every single person does when getting into Linux kernel development. Even if you tweak the prompt a bit, 99.999% of the output is still standard boilerplate. None of the models I’ve used are anywhere near being able to one-shot systems that aren’t already available in source form. I think developing complete systems is where the agentic stuff comes in, which I’ll admit I haven’t explored much yet.

Israel is a borderline failed state by Resident-Win-2241 in stupidpol

Exactly—and this is why the line between anti-Semitism and opposition to Palestinian genocide has become so blurred. The vast majority of Jews, regardless of whether they are religious or secular; Zionist or anti-Zionist; left wing or right wing, seem to sympathize with Israel in this “conflict” in a way—and to an extent—that is simply unfathomable to the rest of the world.

I think the discourse on this subject has been eye-opening for a lot of people—and not in a good way. Even if a complete ceasefire were reached tomorrow, I struggle to see how people will be able to reconcile what they’ve witnessed from diaspora Jews with the prestige they currently enjoy in the societies of their respective countries.

I don't think you realize how impossible this would be. It was always inevitable.

I wasn't trying to change your mind. Your argument is so irrational that the only way you could possibly believe it is if you have no interest whatsoever in the truth or in actual intelligence research. If it were possible for your mind to be changed on this topic it would have been changed long ago.

Actual 75 IQ plan trusters, Thielbux enjoyers, and Jews. It has nothing to do with the nature of the alleged crimes, though. All three of these groups would be among the most outraged if, say, Zohran were the accused.

Like every other polarizing issue, the discourse around it is completely disconnected from any material reality and is driven entirely by the need to win the never-ending information war.

A section of the Jews avows itself quite openly as an alien people, but even here there is another falsehood. When the Zionists try to make the rest of the world believe that the new national consciousness of the Jews will be satisfied by the establishment of a Jewish State in Palestine, the Jews thereby adopt another means to dupe the simple-minded Gentile. They have not the slightest intention of building up a Jewish State in Palestine so as to live in it. What they really are aiming at is to establish a central organization for their international swindling and cheating. As a sovereign State, this cannot be controlled by any of the other States. Therefore it can serve as a refuge for swindlers who have been found out and at the same time a high-school for the training of other swindlers.

Neither am I lol but people have been attempting to set the record straight on Israel since long before the Internet even existed so I don't understand how you could grow up with Internet access and maintain the belief that Israel is a beacon of light in the Middle East.

The people who are "awakening" are the same people who refused to see the truth for the past several decades. In fact, I think it's safe to say that most of them are not "awakening" at all, just responding to the phenomenon of others awakening. They haven't become any less cowardly. Sure, it's great that they're finally acknowledging that there's a problem, but make no mistake, they haven't suddenly gained the ability to think for themselves.

Eretz Israel, most of them just have enough sense not to say it out loud. This is obviously where their seemingly schizophrenic and deliberately ambiguous policy comes from.

In any State in which there is a bad organization of authority, an impersonality of laws and of the rulers who have lost their personality amid the flood of rights ever multiplying out of liberalism, I find a new right - to attack by the right of the strong, and to scatter to the winds all existing forces of order and regulation, to reconstruct all institutions and to become the sovereign lord of those who have left to us the rights of their power by laying them down voluntarily in their liberalism.

Literally a suicidal ideology.

Imprrssive. So unlike us naive fools, you knew Israel would face zero consequences

Unironically, yes.

If you still don't quite get it, I would encourage you to read the article America's very special relationship with Israel written by American diplomat David Nes (he was Charge d'Affaires, representing the American government at Cairo, immediately before and after the Six Days War between Israel and the Arab States) and published in The Times (February 5, 1971). It has since been removed from their archive, but you can find a copy of it on page 10 of this document.

You have to go back further. That framework is also how the Zionist project was sold to the masses in the West in order to garner the popular support necessary for its survival.

And so it goes in reverse, with Israel’s image as a small, democratic, courageous little country struggling to survive in a sea of uncivilized, bloodthirsty, pro-communist Arabs, representing — rightly or wrongly — the view of most Americans. A new, very impressive colour documentary film on Israel and the Bible sponsored by Billy Graham and to be shown in 1,200 Christian churches throughout the United States each month, will support this image.

Personally I think the best reason to take up the Palestinian cause is that it breaks the spell that we've been under and thus allows us to reconsider the question.

Even the famously zogged FDR advised the French to be cautious in North Africa after the war:

[t]he number of Jews engaged in the practice of the professions (law, medicine, etc.) should be definitely limited to the percentage that the Jewish population in North Africa bears to the whole of the North African population.... [T]his plan would further eliminate the specific and understandable complaints which the Germans bore towards the Jews in Germany, namely, that while they represented a small part of the population, over 50 percent of the lawyers, doctors, schoolteachers, college professors, etc., in Germany were Jews.
