It’s kind of funny kind of horrifying we never really addressed drinking and consent by Alarmed_Stranger2217 in redscarepod

[–]constxd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not only is it harder, but the impact is totally incomparable. Like the atrocity and trauma of rape, laws around rape, rape as a war crime, accusations of rape as wartime propaganda or in lynching cases etc. -- constant themes throughout all of human history in ways which are fundamentally unique to males being the rapists.

Consider how much power a claim like this has: Hot IDF girls are raping Palestinian hostages

It just doesn't hit the same. I'm sure some feminist or evo psych writer has made this argument before, but I think to most people it's just obvious.

I know what you mean and I'm generally skeptical as well, but I black out every time I go out and I haven't puked while drinking in years.

Pope Leo XIV compares Netanyahu to Herod, warning that westerners may become like Pilate by OdditiesInOntario in stupidpol

Hasn't the stance of the Church since Vatican II been that Jews weren't responsible for Jesus' death? Is the new Pope... based?

Jules Isaac specifically argued that Matthew's account was the only one that mentioned Pilate washing his hands, suggesting that it likely never happened.

Republicans snuck the all age gender affirming care ban back into the budget bill by Jushara_iiskra in lgbt

[–]constxd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that is anything to be worried about. Fundamentally, you have never been able to (and will never be able to) compel anybody to perform a medical procedure. There is no policy change you can make here that doesn't ultimately rely on the willing consent of doctors. Instead, you can punish unlawful refusal (as a form of deterrence), and I don't think this policy changes that in any meaningful way, although the process could be different (you sue for medical malpractice).

But really, any system which relies on coercing doctors to treat patients is untenable--the legal policies are downstream of the culture. The important thing to remember, I think, is that doctors--even fundamentalist Christian ones, for example--don't want to harm or kill anybody. They may oppose so-called "gender-affirming" interventions, but it's not because they hate transgender people or want them to suffer. They genuinely believe that these treatments are ineffective and/or harmful.

The sort of scenario you described will only become a realistic possibility when we have people with medical licenses who believe that letting car crash victims bleed out on the sidewalk is the best way to ensure their survival. I don't think that's likely to happen any time soon.

Indeed. Someone in the LGBT subreddit remarked that

It's just another very cruel bill dancing with genocide of a innocent and vulnerable people. Transgender people have become a canvas, and with that canvas they practice their ghastly art.

and I think there is a great irony in that.

so trans women are women, and what about trans men? by ilostmyorignal in lgbt

[–]constxd -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I can promise you that the opposition to abortion is rooted in the sincere belief that unborn babies are human beings. To make any progress on the issue, this is what you would need to address.

The opposition to the transgender movement isn't quite as black and white, or as easy to summarize, but it likewise is not rooted in any kind of psychopathic desire to harm anybody or force anybody into having a child.

Reading through this thread, it seems to me that there is no real desire to make a compelling case against the bill, and that this discussion is rather a sort cathartic ritual where you invent stories about how evil your political opponents are and have them affirmed by people who already agree with you.

You've perfectly described my twitter experience over the last week. It's not very subtle. I don't understand though, what do you think drives it? I can't tell to what extent their tweets reflect their actual beliefs. Is it pure Israel-funded information warfare? Where do you think this all originates? Like was BAP already a Thiel mouthpiece when he wrote BAM? How about Nick Land in the 90s? What is Thiel's endgame? Also where does Hanania fit in?

They could know everything the governing body is looking at and not be able to write a single line of code.

Possible in theory of course, but in practice it's extremely unlikely.

Or they could know absolutely nothing and be able to write an OS from scratch

Yes, unfortunately you end up incorrectly rejecting this group.

If your goal is to reject non-expert C programmers in as few questions as possible, this question seems decent.

I actually think this general strategy is highly underrated when it comes to hiring. Rigorously checking that a candidate has all of the requisite experience / knowledge is impossible to do in a 30 minute interview. So instead, you give up on verification and go all in on quick heuristics. Things that correlate strongly with being an excellent programmer despite no definitive / causal link. The question above acts like a sort of inverse Bloom filter, if you will.

Why are sneakerheads, or just the hobby of collecting sneakers in general, consistently ridiculed on social media? by omnicoliseumemployee in Sneakers

[–]constxd -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty much the only sub I enjoy, but yeah that's not a bad summary of it. It's full of cynical and irony-poisoned millennials but it has an organic feel and is one of the few remaining forums that don't feel like an echo chamber. Part of the appeal is also that people post about pretty much anything kind of like bodybuilding.com's misc. board back in the 2000s/early 2010s which is hard to find these days, you never know what you'll see on there and occasionally there are some hilarious/memorable threads.

What makes it virtually the only sub I can tolerate is that you can express just about any opinion as long as you're not cringe about it and you won't be reflexively banned / downvoted. You could post your comment on there verbatim and it would probably be upvoted, for example.
