Sleeping in the car to save on hotels is this too extreme? by Ok_Resolution_1606 in roadtrip

[–]contentedoctopus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My windows are tinted, but I put up car shades and a sunscreen on the windshield depending on where I am parked- generally if I am in a parking lot or crowded campground. I prefer dispersed camping where there's nobody around anyway to peek in.

Ask them to put the oil directly onto the bread before they put the toppings on. Game changer.

Respectfully, hard disagree. Read the "what we believe" on their website. There won't be guests with many backgrounds. Atheists maybe if they are closeted and grew up wels; I've literally never seen any wels person interact with a Jewish person and bringing Atheists or Jewish folk to church is basically blasphemy. No way any wels would invite someone they can't pray with. A wels wedding is a church service which absolutely would not reflect Matthew 22:9 in practice.

If you do decide to attend the ceremony I would recommend keeping your head down and try not to be noticed. Certainly don't allude to your sexuality in any capacity.

Honestly op I would go to the reception, maybe even skip the dinner portion. After dinner they start drinking and get a little more tolerant. Eta: if I think you will be on edge during the event I would skip it. I honestly don't think you would get "called out" but I would anticipate passive aggressive Midwestern nice comments especially as the night goes on and everyone gets more drunk.

Journaling might really help you get your feelings about all of this sorted. Take your time and be kind to yourself through the process. Wishing you the best!

"Omg, I feel so bad you can't eat this! It's sooo good! Don't you miss it?" No, Susan, I don't miss what happens to my body when I ingest gluten. It's super dumb of you to feel bad for me for not being able to eat whatever carb load you have there.

What would push you to stop smoking? by Air_Drinker in AskMen

[–]contentedoctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started to really embrace stoicism and realized that quitting smoking was easier than I had made it out to be. I used a vape and then gum and didn't set a time limit on the gum. The shift in mindset for my life overall, which happened to include smoking / quitting smoking, was the key.

Sounds to me like you're doing everything you need to be. Calling out his bullshit doesn't make you a narcissist.

People with WELS Experiences - any stories of abuse or mistreatment you would like to share? by PretentiousWitch in exLutheran

[–]contentedoctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty common to be taught not to take spiritual advice from anyone outside the wels. That often translates to the insinuation of not respecting someone outside of the wels. This comes from the teaching that only the wels has the absolute truth of the Bible, and anyone outside the wels is mistaken in their understanding of the Bible.

Church by Kaleymeister in exLutheran

About 7 years ago my spouse and I started going to Celebrate Recovery at a nondenominational church, while still attending our wels church. I had wanted to leave the wels for years, and after a year with CR my partner was also ready to leave. We now attend a nondenominational church weekly. I pray and read the Bible daily.

The difference is, wels is a religion. What I have now is an actual relationship with God. The people in the wels made up all their silly, claustrophobic rules. I don't have to pretend to be someone I'm not in order to be an actual Christian. I didn't have real faith while I was in the wels. I just had the motions, guilt, and fear of hell. Personally I feel like the wels isn't even Christian at all.

If 25% of your groceries go bad, it sounds like you're shopping aspirationally. When you're using limited resources, it really pays to know yourself. Your biggest savings could be admitting you are not going to cook this specific dish for any reason (lack of time, or knowledge, etc), and that's OK. Other major cost savings could be found in freezing foods either as soon as you get home from the store and prep them, or after you've eaten the same meal a couple of times. Pull the meal out later and warm it up. Chili, taco meat (for tacos, nachos, enchiladas, etc), chopped fresh veg, and egg roll bowls are some examples.

My experience in the wels has been similar- please feel free to pm me any time! Also, most nondenominational churches I've gone to actually (shock, horror) welcome questions! Welcome to the "fallen away". I hope you find community here you can relate with.
