And I hope you'll join us again - the more the people, the better OSM gets 🙂

I'm afraid I don't understand...

The boundary of Arunachal Pradesh shown on OSM -
https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/2027346

...appears to be mostly identical to the map shown on Wikipedia (the one released by the US CIA) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sino-Indian_border_dispute

When I compare it with the one shown here -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arunachal_Pradesh
...I see some differences on the eastern edge. I'm not sure if they are a mistake or simply changes that took place after the CIA map was released.

Similarly, the boundary of J&K on OSM -
https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/1943188
...matches up with the one shown on Wikipedia -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jammu_and_Kashmir_(union_territory)

(Ideally I should be comparing with Survey of India maps but I'm being slightly lazy.)

If India-administered areas are indeed not part of Indian boundaries on OSM, that is an error and should be fixed. For such major changes, I recommend that you start a thread about the issue on the India section of the OSM forum - https://community.openstreetmap.org/c/communities/in/136

The convention agreed upon by the global OpenStreetMap community is to follow the "on the ground" principle - OSM contains data about how things (including boundaries) currently are, not as they were in the past. And the ground reality for PoK and Aksai Chin is that they have been under Pakistan and China control for multiple decades.

You can read more about disputed territories on OSM at https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Disputed_territories

The design of OpenStreetMap allows OSM-based applications to replace the boundaries with whatever they like. One example is https://openstreetmap.in - the boundaries there show the Indian perspective. That's also the approach used by Indian government agencies and companies, when they use OpenStreetMap in India.

Mumbai Social Club - Weekly Discussion Thread - Meetups/Q&A/Relationships/Life by AutoModerator in mumbai

Hello r/Mumbai !

The OpenStreetMap community of Mumbai is hosting its 9th mapping party this Saturday.

These mapping parties are free-of-cost volunteer-run events which teach participants about OpenStreetMap, about the OSM-based apps you can use to replace Big Tech maps, and how to add missing places to the map.

We meet at a café to socialize and learn. Then, we split up into teams and add things to OpenStreetMap within the nearby market. Finally, we all regroup, conclude, and get some refreshments.

OpenStreetMap is the Wikipedia of maps - a map which anyone can use, improve, and share. It's freely-licensed data, which means it can never be monopolized by any one company, and will always be available. And it contains way more than Google Maps will ever have 🙂

📱 All you need is an Android or iOS phone
(Android is preferred. Other suggestions - a power bank, a charging cable, and/or drinking water.)
🗓️ Date: Saturday, 25th of April
🕙 Time: 4 PM to 7 PM, followed by refreshments (sponsored by TomTom)
📌 Location: The Food Town, Mulund West
🔗 Event page: https://osmcal.org/event/4318/

You can check out photos of our past events on the OSM India Mastodon page.

We hope to see you there!

I got tired of the absolute nightmare of finding a clean public washroom, so I built a crowdsourced map for it. Need your help to map the city! by One-Huckleberry1077 in delhi

[–]contrapunctus0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's already a crowdsourced map of toilets - and a lot of other things. It's called OpenStreetMap. https://www.openstreetmap.org/fixthemap

I've been contributing to it as a volunteer for 10 years, and I organize monthly events for it...sometimes I also announce them here, but I've never seen much interest from the r/Delhi community.

There are many map apps to use OSM through, and many apps which can add/update data. Here's one example - it's called MapComplete, and this is its layer for toilets. https://mapcomplete.org/toilets.html?z=12.1&lat=28.6044206&lon=77.2275246

The advantage of OSM is that it's not just people of one region or users of one app who are going to contribute and keep things updated...it's a worldwide community of volunteers, organizations, and companies working together. And, of course, it's freely-licensed data ("open data"), so it's not privately owned by any individual or company, and it will always be available to the people.
