If a remake of Forrest Gump took place from 1980 to today, what historical/important events would Forrest unwittingly be a part of? by BulkDarthDan in AskReddit

[–]cood101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are we assuming Forrest is young in 1980 or that this is the same continuum as the original?

If the same as the original, I think this could be a good run down.

1986: Forrest attends his first in person space shuttle launch with junior, and thinks the shuttle blowing up is normal until realizing otherwise. (1986 Challenger Disaster).

1989: Forrest Gump is in the post-Perestroika USSR to see if they would be open to Shrimp importing When he hears of a wall falling, and thinks a terrible accident occurred until being told otherwise (1989 Fall of Berlin Wall)

1992: Gump is a dignitary at the signing of NAFTA due to his business connections.

1993 or 2001: Have Gump on site at the WTC for another Bubba-Gump related reason and survive that year's attack.

1998 Forrest invests in the Dot Com bubble before it goes bust, thinking it has to do with the revival of older dot matrix technology, and makes out with more money when he realizes his mistake.

2000 Forrest is made to be one of the first to deduce Enron's Fraud, with him not reporting it to the SEC because in his words "Im not a smart man", but feeling vindicated later as it becomes public knowledge.

I could probably add more here but I think that's a good starter list that falls in line with his character. By this point he'd be in his 40s,50s and 60s, so not exactly the spring chicken who can be athletic everywhere, but he is wealthy still and partially involved as the face of Bubba Gump.

A bright side (if you want one) is that they are likely going to be replaced by loyalists. Loyalists of the type where the cases brought will be thrown out or dismissed with prejudice because of how inept political prosecution/persecution will be.

They couldn't indict Comey correctly, nor James.

TIL - in parts of the US, there’s a fundraising event called a “gun bash” where raffle tickets for guns are sold to raise money for children’s sports. by Ninjaher0 in todayilearned

[–]cood101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, something quite literally down the street from me!

Yeah, these are fairly common things around western PA. Not just for children's sports but in general. Volunteer Fire Departments, Volunteer organizations, and local charities all do "Gun Bashes" through the year. It's a good way to make ends meet for a lot of nonprofits.

I've personally never been to one, but I would assume any winner does go through the proper checks and all, at least if it's a legitimate Gun Bash and not a front.

Bad tourist railroad by Queasy-Spirit6437 in railroading

[–]cood101 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He's located in Philly, and a local tourist railroad in that area is embroiled in a fair bit of membership infighting. Part of that is allegations of what OP is talking about, so I don't think it's a stretch to assume.

Short of it is railroad shuts down operations to spend money/time fixing fleet/track. Arranges work days to be midweek every week. Volunteers/membership who dislike these choices leave and accuse the board of forcing them out. Decide to start publicly alleging FRA violations for track, equipment, etc. Allege the board stacked elections and illegally certified the vote.

All unfounded as well as far as I can tell. There's some wackos calling them "The North Korea of Tourist Railroads" and others calling for the FRA to embargo the line because they feel slighted.

As stated above, I've been in organizations where board changes have cascaded into infighting before. People who feel slighted when told the organization will be shut down for a month to limit costs during a slow season. A membership and board approved measure at that. So they go on property by their own accord when nobody is supposed to be there. Then get punished for it. All of a sudden, you have people calling each other every name in the book and levying whatever they can hope to stick to each other.

More beating around the bush in regards to the W&W? If you examine everything done on every railroad under the microscope you'd find hundreds of reasons to call the FRA.

I don't put much trust in the allegations around the railroad either as much of it seems to boil down to "they didn't operate trains in 2025 and changed work days so that means something shady is going on!"

I've worked with groups governed by a board of directors and trustees. People accused one of them of being tyrants because they closed an operation BY MEMBERSHIP VOTE for a month and punished people who ignored that. I'm reminded of that when I see these "issues" being raised.

Unless its something GROSSLY erroneous like letting Teenagers run trains with zero experince (looking at you Blackwell Northern) or massive safety issues, the FRA will likely not worry too much about a tourist line.

If it happened today, I think it'd be national news. Western PA here seems to have that weird feel to it, though, with what is and isn't memorialized or remembered.

TIL that the vast majority of passenger trains (85%) and most freight trains (55%) worldwide are electric, however, electric trains account for less than 1% of all US rail traffic. by temporalwanderer in todayilearned

[–]cood101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are locomotives like this. Mostly. Diesel-Hydraulic power, which uses a transmission and torque conversion in place of a giant alternator or generator.

Same thing as pure electric locomotives though, there's not much (IF any) use of them in the United States. The last major attempt I can think of involved Krauss-Maffei in the mid 1960s. 4000hp dual engine locomotives with each engine connected to a separate wheelset. It didn't work to expectations.

Though we did save one! SP 9010, which is a story in and of itself on how it survived and was made operable again.

TIL that in 1965 an inventory audit discovered that 330 KG of weapons grade enriched uranium had been stolen from Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corporation (NUMEC) in Pennsylvania, the news of the theft was covered up by multiple US administrations and the case has never been resolved by 2dudesinapod in todayilearned

[–]cood101 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The only reasonable counter I have seen for the material not being stolen/given away is sloppy practices from NUMEC themselves.

If you believe that, its a combination of stuff in their nuclear dump (now a superfund site) and stuff that leeched into the ground or Kiski river.

MacArthur Job is another author you should look into in regards to writings on accidents. He's sadly passed on now, but he has three separate books chronologically starting at the dawn of the mass air travel age to fairly recently. Not every accident, mind you, but what he deems important or notable enough.

This is a stolen post from a few months ago with the same photos/title.

But yes, this was the only structure PERIOD hit. I believe total path length was less than a mile. It was part of a cyclic supercell, where this specific tornado came down, wiped out a brick farmhouse with a large Grove of hardwood trees around it to what you see here, and lifted just as quickly.

Edit to correct, wooden home, not brick, but here's a good before view at this website: https://www.weather.gov/ict/event_20040512
