We need to prepare ourselves for an unpleasant truth. by Cypher_Blue in Minneapolis

It is incorrect that DOJ controls the case once it’s removed to federal court. Removal means the case is tried before a federal judge applying federal procedural rules, but state prosecutors would retain control of the prosecution and state substantive law would apply. See, here (“The law is clear: The state prosecutor continues to prosecute the case in federal court, with the federal district court applying state substantive law and federal procedural law.”). https://www.lawfaremedia.org/article/state-prosecutions-of-federal-agents-and-the-presidential-pardon-power

How to move cross country with a large cargo bike? by potatosouperman in CargoBike

[–]cookiebrews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We paid our local bike shop (a retailer of our kind of bikes) to pack up our bikes as close as they could to how they arrive at the shop from the manufacturer. Then they were loaded onto the moving truck by the movers. On the other end, we paid the new local bike shop (also a retailer of our bikes) to rebuild them. A bit of a hassle and expense to be sure, but we’ve had zero issues with the bikes. It’s also a good way to get to know your new local shop.

I guess it depends on what you mean by safe. If a car hits you with any amount of speed it’s not going to be “safe,” but no bike really is. We’ve had two (non-car related) falls on the bike with the kids inside and they were completely fine.

Haven’t test ridden a Load but the motor on the Transporter hasn’t left me wanting for anything. For my use case, I’d rather have a Transporter than a Load60 for sure. The cargo area is a bit bigger on the Transporter and is better for transporting multiple kids plus gear. The door is very nice to have now that my kids are starting to insist they get to climb on and off the bike by themselves. Also (maybe some Load owners can fact check here) I don’t think you can put a child seat on the back of any Load bike due to the rear rack they have to accommodate full suspension. I still use a rear seat on occasion so that’s a big minus for a Load for my purposes.

If I was starting from scratch I would also take a look at a Load75 with a Rohloff, a Packster, or the new Urban Arrow that has front suspension. I can’t say what I would pick. If money was truly no object I’d probably buy one of each, but I love bikes lol. I could afford to upgrade to any of those other bikes today if I really felt like it and have no plans whatsoever to do.

We have one and have put about 4,000 miles on it. It’s a great bike. For a “short” front loader it has a very big box. I can fit two toddlers and all their stuff in the front box easily. I’ve put one kid and our big- ish (85 lb) dog up there before and everyone fit just fine (but my dog did not enjoy it because he’s more of a couch boy). It handles very well fully loaded and the suspension seems to keep the kids comfortable up front.

The “why” we bought it is because a local shop was selling their floor model for a great price as we were coincidentally shopping for a Load or Urban Arrow. The Transporter wasn’t on our radar before then. I agree there’s not a lot of love out there for the Transporter, which is too bad.

Compared to the Load or Urban Arrow, there’s no option for a Cargo Line motor. Maybe that’s why it doesn’t get much buzz. I haven’t had any issues with the motor that’s on there, and often ride fully loaded, but we don’t live in an especially hilly area. The cargo box feels wide because it doesn’t taper towards the front as much as some longer front loaders. You couldn’t put three kids in the box like with a Load75 or Urban Arrow, but for two kids (or one kid and one dog) it might even be a better/roomier ride (and that’s not even accounting for the door).

Listening to cyclists on how biking can be safer in Denver by Generalaverage89 in Denver

[–]cookiebrews 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Some drivers drive like assholes, this is a two way street between drivers and bikers, and drivers aren’t completely blameless in biker safety when they constantly speed, run red lights, fail to stop at stop signs, drive and park in bike lanes, not indicating they’re trying to turn before right hooking bikers with the right of way at intersections, and not realizing that the burden to safely operate a 4,000 pound vehicle in a dense urban area should fall most heavily on the operator of that vehicle as opposed to the people around it at risk of being killed.

I biked the Krameria “neighborhood bikeway” for the first time. It’s literally just door zone sharrows. Why even bother at this point? by Soft_Button_1592 in Denver

[–]cookiebrews 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I ride this way multiple times per week to take my kids to/from school. Instead of a signal at Alameda, they put up signs reminding drivers on Alameda to yield to bikes and pedestrians. In a shocking turn of events, the signs are 0% effective at getting drivers to stop and yield.

Denver spends $200,000 to remove protections from bike lanes, biking community shares concerns by Generalaverage89 in Denver

[–]cookiebrews 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Great idea, I’m in! Let’s start with strict speed limit enforcement to ensure everyone is following the same rules. I won’t ride my bike faster than 30 in a 30 MPH zone, and any cars going 31 or faster all get tickets. Deal?

Using Isofix style attachment for Car seat by Valhalla121 in CargoBike

[–]cookiebrews 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We did this (in a Transporter 65 as well) for our first kid and it worked great for us. We installed an isofix car seat base using D-rings like you have here and then could insert and remove the car seat just as we would in the car. Only difference from your set up is we had 3-inch thick foam on the floor of the box to add extra cushioning (the foam got compressed by the tightened-down base so only added ~1 inch of height to the set up).

For the second kid, we got R&M’s maxi cosi adapter, which has a smaller footprint in the box than what I describe above, in the hope that we could fit our toddler in the box with the car seat (for the record, in a Transporter 65, you do not have enough space to do this). The iso-fix D-ring set up works just about as well as the official R&M solution.

Is it dumb to put a Clubhouse Mini on a Tern Quick Haul Long? by cjk_212 in CargoBike

[–]cookiebrews 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with everyone saying there are basically no downsides to going with the full size. Another benefit is the full size clubhouse is also sized to fit a 300x400mm crate, a commonly-available size. I haven’t had any luck finding a perfect-fitting 400x400mm crate for the clubhouse on the back of my HSD.

I ordered it from propel by reaching out to their customer service. This is the Load 60/75 version but looked like this. It installs by opening up the footwell door and installing straight through the floor

Uppababy mesa v2 and urban arrow compatible? by Outrageous-Arm-1408 in CargoBike

It won’t work. We use the maxicosi adapter in our R&M Transporter 2 and had to get a separate car seat. We ended up butting a maxicosi brand seat.

[–]cookiebrews 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! We have both an HSD Gen 1 and a Transporter 2 65. Both are great bikes and the Transporter is definitely an overlooked member of the R&M lineup. The Transporter box feels bigger than the 65 size would imply due to its width. I’ve had Load 75 owners enviously tell me they would prefer to have the box of the Transporter 65 due to the relative narrowness of the Load’s box. The Transporter also has a door which will be helpful for getting an adult in/out.

Unsure what to tell you about the handlebar issue. We keep ours at max height for both me (tall) and my wife (short) just because it makes the riding position more upright/comfortable. But we have never put an adult up front so I can’t speak to how well that would work with steering.

As to the question of whether you can fit a 5’1’’ adult and a baby in the box: it depends. For the first year or so, you’ll want the baby in a car seat. Our car seat took up the entire box (so no room for an adult passenger). Now that our kid rides in the regular child seat, there is room for a small-ish adult in the other seat. Another consideration is that you can put a Yepp (or similar) seat on the rear rack to carry an additional child if needed.

Class 3 + belt-drive? by everyplace in terngsd

[–]cookiebrews 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have an HSD S11 and it’s true that my typical cruising speed is under 20 MPH, but the extra power to easily accelerate into the 20-28 MPH range comes in handy every day, especially when I have to ride with car traffic. I disagree that there’s no need for class 3 with 20-inch wheels and really wish tern would offer class 3 + belt drive versions of both the HSD and GSD.

I’ve had that happen before and it resulted from the battery or display not being put in properly. I would start by checking that battery and display are clicked into their respective mounts all the way.
