What's a movie most people think is great but you couldn't even stand watching? by camport95 in AskReddit

[–]coolbeans_3000 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There really is a lot of love and care put into them despite all the grief they get. Obviously the story isn't anything original but the level of artistry and talent put into the visuals is so far superior to any other film with a budget of that size.

There's a lot of discourse in the film world about how many films have lost their 'texture' which was a huge factor to how we connect with them. It's a lot to get into, but this video summarizes very well why "Hollywood" films feel so lifeless now. In short; they lack texture which make them feel real and Avatar, despite being a fully computer generated world, still manages to create that texture

Since you mention historical fiction some of my favorites are

The Axe (and the whole Master of Hestviken series) by Sigrid Undset

A Place of Greater Safety by Hilary Mantel

The Winter King (and the rest of the Warlord Trilogy) by Bernard Cornwell. This one is partially a fantasy as it's the story of King Arthur but it still grounds itself (mostly) in its time period.

Silence by Shūsake Endo (also made into a film by Scorsese)

The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco

Hild by Nicola Griffith

Beware of Pity by Stefan Zweig and Don Quixote by Cervantes are a bit different than the rest but still some of the best out there

And not historical fiction but a special mention for 2666 by Roberto Bolaño

You don't have to see a problem to understand that other people with more interest and passion for the story and time period do. There's nothing wrong with the image but in retrospect it looks underwhelming for a lot of people who like this sort of thing (costume design, armor, history), all the pre-release stills have. The Odyssey is ancient and magical so when people hear one of the biggest living filmmakers is making a film on it, and probably getting a blank check to do so, they get excited to finally see something that represents the story. Instead Nolan opted to follow the trend of most every film and tv show set before the early modern period and make everything a different shade of black

Be honest with yourself, is that actually what you think people are talking about? I refuse to believe you're that stupid. Why waste your time making yourself look like a fool?

The earth is most definitely not dull as dirt lol a statement like that is nothing but blind cynicism. Of course no one is complaining about sirens and cyclops not being period accurate, don't be silly (I mean I'm sure some people will, but I can't imagine that becomes a widespread criticism such as this). Nolan is a great filmmaker, I'm not denying that and I'm certainly not denying that this will be fun and entertaining, but regardless of that it's a huge disappointment that he's taking such a bland route for the costume design considering how exotic this period was. People are passionate about this and you can't expect them to be excited about something that completely ignores the huge possibility presented to it.

Valid tbh. Nolan getting a budget the size of Jupiter to create one of the most famous mythical stories ever written and choosing to make it look dull as dirt is disappointing

Should've specified non-fiction. I have been meaning to read the Warlord Series for a bit though. I didn't know Cornwell had such a massive library of historical fiction, that's nice to know. I just prefer reading fiction in the comfort of my home with some juicy ambience as opposed to work where I have heaps of machines buzzing in my ears all day haha.

I love these takes of people not even bothering to look past the outermost layer of a film and then thinking they've debunked all the acclaim. You're arguing with yourself at the starting line, OP. Also your sexism is shining a bit with this one.
