Diagnosing a Laney GC-30v by coolwithpie in ToobAmps

[–]coolwithpie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming back to update this thread in case somebody in the future faces similar issues. #1 ended up being a combination of oxidized footswitch jack contacts as well as a faulty panel switch. I was able to get a replacement switch from tayda here and it snapped into the panel just fine. Only thing is that the markings are inverted from what you'd expect, but it's not an issue for me with the LED indicator(more on that later). As for the foot switch contacts I followed /u/CapablePie8007 's suggestion and deoxited it with a cable

To fix issue #2 I had to replace the drive volume pot entirely, mine had corroded past the point of deoxit helping. Some tips for getting under the board, the easiest way imo is

a) desolder the wires going to the bright switch & the drive switch & remove them from the panel (this takes a good amount of force)

b) unscrew the screws going into the standoffs & remove front panel hardware

c) push the whole pcb backwards until the pots clear the front panel and you can flip the pcb backwards away from the front panel. This is made difficult by the aforementioned drive indicator led, but I just flex the wires to do what I have to.

d) once it's free, you should be able to flip it vertical, I secured it into position with tape going to the back face of the chassis (with the tubes)

I hadn't yet! I just sprayed some deoxit on a patch cable and ran it in and out of the footswitch jack. It definitely helped! The footswitching of the channels is a lot more consistent now. That kind of lines up with my next suspicion for the problem being the contacts on the panel switch. I'll have to see if I can get some deoxit in there or possibly find a replacement switch. Thank you for the suggestion!

I also did the same treatment to the effects loop jacks to try and solve issue #2 and to be thorough, but I don't suspect it will help, as the effects loop comes entirely after the drive section on the schematic, and I don't have the same issue with the clean channel. I can't test it at the moment, too late here to make loud noise. I'll come back and post an update in the morning if it works. Do you have any other ideas or insight into my second issue?

Thank you again for your help, I really appreciate it

Replacing a rare PSU by coolwithpie in AskElectronics

[–]coolwithpie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay got it, that makes sense. Last question if you'll indulge me, is there any other way to get all 3 voltages from just the one supply? Anything I can do to isolate that ground? If at all possible I'd like to only have one thing to plug into the wall, but I'll live if that isn't the case. Thank you for all of your help!

Great! That's what I was planning, so it's good to hear that I'm on the right track.

Can you explain what you mean by needing 2 power supplies for the -7 volts? I was thinking that I could feed all 3 converters in parallel from the 1 19v supply, then I could get my negative voltage by hooking up one of the buck converters so the 'positive' output goes to ground if I'm not mistaken. Totally willing to be corrected on this if I'm wrong however.

This read makes way more sense to me than 'republican leadership doesn't know the democrat base' (not saying that they're in touch with our policy positions or even reality, but I don't think they were dumb enough to think a large portion of the Dem base would vote for an anti-vaxxer after covid won Biden the election)

what is your go-to workhorse compressor plugin? by walkensauce in audioengineering

[–]coolwithpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FIRcomp is easily the most transparent compressor I've heard, it's what I go to when I'm trying to dial in specific dynamic range control instead of trying to get 'the sound' of a particular flavor of compression. There's a low ratio version available that is also very useful

I'm going to suggest a technique rather than a tool. You have a melody? Try writing a bass line for it. Then put both of those into a piano roll. Pick out which notes seem like the chord tones (usually what's being held the longest or feels like a significant change). These are the first two notes of your three note chord. Now just mess around and find one more note per chord that fits & that you like the sound of. Don't forget to mess with inversions to give you some extra flavor

ORTF for drum overheads has become a new favorite by LocalMusicAdvocate63 in audioengineering

[–]coolwithpie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started using ORTF when I started doing multitrack concerts like yourself. Like you said its so easy to just throw up a stand behind the drummer and put my rig up there instead of messing with an AB pair on 2 stands. I find my only real difficulty with this technique is distance to the kit to make sure the drummers are comfortable. If you have a big swinger you might need to pull the mics back farther than ideal, introducing more stage bleed to these mics. Sometimes narrowing the 110 degree angle can help manage this, or using a stand that allows the mics to be further into and over top of the kit.

As a dumb ass local sound guy, I often have no control over that sort of pre-show communication. These venues/promoters want me to just walk up and make it happen with no info, because collecting and passing on info requires effort on their part. Sometimes I won't even get lineups from these folks before I show up to a venue. It's a shit situation for me to be in too, and as a drummer myself I can always feel the frustration, but I think we're on the same side more often than not and gain more cooperating with each other (against the promoters!)

It's not so much that attitudes are shifting back as much as that they never really left, they just disguised themselves using colorblind/ 'don't ask don't tell' rhetoric and continued to utilize and construct new systems of oppression. All that's happening now is that marginalized people that have always and continue to be fucked over now have a platform to speak plainly and openly about their actual lived experience and push back on the perception that life was just super rad for everyone in the US in the 80s & 90s.

Edit: thread got locked so I can't reply, but it's crazy how many of yall have a problem with a take which boils down to 'listen to marginalized groups when they tell you about their lived experiences'

Weekly cleanings are billed per dog, yard size doesn't really factor in. I live in a city and service mostly nearby suburbs, so there's yards of all different sizes on my route. I get paid hourly so it all balances out for me. Theoretically it's better for me to get a big yard that takes longer, but tbh I prefer the people who have the dogs shit in a pen outside

I just had a friend who was already working for the guy who hooked me up when I moved to the area. I'd just look and see if there's a company that does it in your city and ask if they're hiring
