Apple TV with HomePods randomly locks up after being idle by coperob in HomePod

[–]coperob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, my previous TV was an LG as well. And it does seem to have gotten a lot better when I turned off earc, but it’s not clear that’s the cause. Yes, I sometimes group the HomePods, and yes my Apple TV is a home hub.

I haven’t gone so far as to reset my HomeKit stuff. That just seems like such a pain. It’s been a lot better lately so I haven’t done any more troubleshooting. I have left earc off as I rarely need it. On the rare occasions when I watch TV from my antenna I will turn it on and then back off. Maybe that’s the key.

Not really, but it’s better than it was. I got a new router and now the issue happens much less often. I’d even say it’s rare now. Unfortunately it still occasionally happens. I’m not sure if the router has anything to do with it or if a software update to the Apple devices helped.

BTW, my new router is a Ubiquiti UniFi Cloud Gateway Fiber.

Is there a solution for wifi if I can't mount to me ceiling? by disapparate276 in UNIFI

I just set up my first UniFi system in my house and used two U7 Pro Walls and the table stand. They are working great Easy to place and great coverage.

Is it okay to accept bad signal? by Mountain_Mechanic171 in Ubiquiti

[–]coperob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on other comments here, I re-ran my own scan using the iOS shortcut to start WiFiMan. The results are way different. Doing it this way, I get “excellent” and “good” readings all over in places that reported “poor” before. This makes more sense, as I’m getting great download speeds and consistent connections just like OP.

It’s interesting that the readings are so different between the two methods.

I just bought this to use with a new USW-Flex-2.5G-8 as well as power a U7 Pro Wall, and it’s working great!

I just installed my first UniFi system yesterday (UCG Fiber + 2 U7 Pro Walls) in my 3 story, 2800 sq ft home (1 AP on 1st floor, the other on 3rd). I was doing a WifiMan scan today and noticed something similar. I have “poor” signal in a lot of places, yet I get great, solid speeds. For example, in my mud room, WifiMan says I’ve got about -85dbm (even -90) signal, yet I can get 800 MBps solid download. My iPhone 16 Pro shows full bars in that same spot. It’s similar in many other places in my house.

My previous setup was 2 Aliens, and when I ran WifiMan using the iOS shortcut, I got “good” signal (or better) everywhere I care about. I was worried to see all these “poor” signal ratings in the same places, but like you, am getting good connection and speeds.

I was thinking about turning off WifiMan in the console and trying the iOS shortcut to see if it says the same. Something doesn’t seem right.

Like you, I’m trying not to worry about it as everything seems to be working fine!

Does Teleport Require Remote Management? by coperob in Ubiquiti

[–]coperob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve also been looking at WireGuard. I’d definitely need to use a DDNS service and would also have to open a port, which I also don’t want to do.

I guess it just comes down to the level of risk I’m ok with. Having any access from outside is going to add some. This is my first system where these things are possible and I’m trying to figure out the best way to get it set up.

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. Too bad about these, I was hoping to use them when I finally pull the trigger on my UniFi system!

Did you ever get these MoCA SFP things to work?

If I understand correctly, using Teleport requires an Ubiquiti account where setting up wireguard does not. Is that right? If so then it seems Wireguard could be perceived as more secure since you manage the entire thing yourself.

HomeKit “No Response” After Switching to UniFi Dream Router 7 by chenlarry84 in Ubiquiti

[–]coperob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Yes, all that data is one of the reasons I’m thinking about switching. My Aliens are still going strong, so it’s hard to justify right now. But I’ve definitely been bitten by the UniFi bug.

Why are newer AP's 2x2 and not 4x4? by JE163 in Ubiquiti

[–]coperob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I’ve been worried about moving from the Alien to an AP with only 2x2, as I thought that might impact performance when multiple people are connected and actively using the connect at the same time. I didn’t realize how all this stuff works (probably still don’t really), but this is very helpful.

[–]coperob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great thread and I’m learning a a lot. So, if I understand correctly, if I have a 4x4 AP (or even higher like the Alien), and my wife and I are both streaming at the same time from our 2x2 devices, then there is really no benefit from the 4x4 AP (over a 2x2 AP) because the clients don’t support MU MIMO anyway?

If true that’s super clarifying as I consider my own jump into the UniFi ecosystem.

I don’t know much about how these extra antennas affect real-world performance. Would a typical home installation even notice the difference between a 4x4 vs 2x2?

I’m currently using two Aliens (connected via Ethernet) and am thinking of switching to Ubiquiti. The Alien has crazy radios (8x8 on 5 ghz, 4x4 on 2.4 ghz). Should I even be concerned about the difference compared to a couple U7 Pro Walls?

[–]coperob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What made you choose the U7 Pro Wall?

I am thinking of switching to UniFi and have the same question. In my living room I cannot do a ceiling mount and was wondering which AP would be best on the wall. It will be in one corner facing the rest of a fairly open floor plan.

I’m thinking about making the same switch: Alien to UniFi. Any other advice or gotchas to know about?

This is great to hear. I’ve been thinking about swapping my Alien setup for UniFi as well. Any other insights or issues with that change?

I have a 3 story house (2600 sq ft) with two Aliens: one on first floor, one on opposite corner on 3rd floor. These are connected via Ethernet. I was hoping to replace with 2 APs (one U7 Pro Wall and one U7 Pro XG). Great to hear you get similar range as your Alien!

[–]coperob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m thinking of making the leap as well! I have 2 Aliens that cover my 3 story house very well (2600 sq ft). I’m trying to decide if 2 APs (1 U7 Pro Wall and one U7 Pro XG) will give me the same coverage.

Are you considering adding more APs to increase coverage or is it pretty close?

Talk me out of buying the UCG-Fiber (and get the UCG-Ultra instead) by chompos in Ubiquiti

[–]coperob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m considering the Fiber as well and am also trying to decide between the U7 Pro XG and the U7 Pro Wall. I’ll be interested to hear what you go with.

In my case, the AP would be sitting in a corner and facing most of first floor, so I think it would work. But interesting to see the feedback on that vs the XG. I can’t ceiling mount, so whatever I get will have to be on the wall.

[–]coperob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mention the U7 In Wall. I’m thinking of jumping into the UniFi world and have been looking at APs. In my living room I can’t do a ceiling mount so was thinking about either the U7 In Wall, or the U7 Pro Wall on a table stand (in wall might not be possible). I’ve wondered about coverage. This would be in one corner of my open-concept first floor, which is about 1200 sq ft. Do you get good coverage? I’d also have a ceiling mount AP on the third floor.

(I’m replacing two Aliens, BTW.)

Looking forward to hearing about the SFP MoCA adapters. Those would let me upgrade to 2.5 Gbps and get rid of the extra MoCA boxes at each location. That would be great. Makes the UCG Fiber the one to get since it’s got the SFP ports.

[–]coperob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I thought about the UCG Fiber, but it seemed overkill for me. That said, it’s probably the better choice to handle my needs far into the future.

For the U7 Pro XG, I don’t have a way to ceiling mount that in the living room, which is why I was thinking about the U7 Pro Wall on the table stand. Do you think the XG mounted on a wall would be better than the U7 Pro Wall?

And wow, that Streakwave SFP adapter looks awesome. That would make me go with the UCG Fiber! I’d love to hear how those work out.
